Improving Metadata Quality: Augmentation and Recombination
Digital libraries have, in the main, adopted the traditional library notion of the metadata "record" as the basic unit of management and exchange. Although this simplifies the harvest and re-exposure of metadata, it limits the ability of metadata aggregators to improve the quality of metadata and to share specifics of those improvements with others. The National Science Digital Library (NSDL) is exploring options for augmenting harvested metadata and re-exposing the augmented metadata to downstream users with detailed information on how it was created and by whom. The key to this augmentation process involves changing the basic metadata unit from “record” to "statement.
FINDEX--Meta Information System for Substances
FINDEX is a substance meta information system that virtually maps the data in one system. FINDEX is used internally in the German assuring quick access to different in-house information systems and making vital information available for interdisciplinary work. Providing Metadata to Historical Material on Viewer Application iPalletnexus
The iPalletnexus development group has currently developed a viewer application, iPalletnexus. The application allows browsing of large volumes of digitized images such as pictorial diagrams, maps and paintings over networks. On iPalletnexus, it is necessary to provide metadata that describe information such as the title and the author of each resource, and the metadata must be adaptable to any type of resources since the object resources belong to various genres. However, as Japanese traditional historical materials are to be handled on iPalletnexus at the same time, the metadata also needs to contain detailed information that can be used for academic research as well. Furthermore, the metadata must also contain the digital data certification that is handled on iPalletnexus. Thus, this paper introduces novel methods for storing information unique to traditional historical materials and digital data certification in metadata while maintaining versatility by using Dublin Core
Leveraging Metadata Inductively and Subjectively
Metadata has typically been used for deductive reasoning – applications take advantage of its precision to renderobjective conclusions about annotated sources that are 100% reliable. Metadata annotations could also be used inductively, however, toallow systems to reason about the similarities that individual users perceive among instances. Metadata Management System (MMS)
Much have been said about metadata which is "data about data" used for classification and retrieval of information. However, metadata is not created by itself. This paper will present the design, interface and implementation of our own metadata tool called Metadata Management System, MMS that was developed to facilitate the creation, maintenance and storage of metadata. This metadata tool supports two well-known metadata models, Dublin Core and SCORM 1.2 (IEEE Learning Object Metadata). The author will also elaborate on the implementation of metadata in the Malaysia Grid for Learning, (MyGfL) portal. These would include the usage of MMS by MyGfL potential content providers, problems encountered and their feedback about the MMS
Opening the legal literature Portal to multilingual access
The issues of multilingual access to legal information are examined, and strategies of cross-language retrieval to legal information resources are illustrated as additional services of the Portal to legal literature created by ITTIG. Consideration is given to the peculiarities of legal language as a technical language closely related to the diverse legal systems. The paper describes a methodological approach planned for the Portal to provide a single point of access into disparate repositories where categories of law (i.e. trade law, constitutional law, criminal law) are the essential metadata to point to relevant material irrespective of the language used in a query. Categories of law of a specific legal system represent the way how retrieval can be satisfactorily achieved. Strategies and techniques for translating legal queries to different target languages, eventually disambiguating ambiguous words by a machine learning approach are illustrated
Metadata Exchange without pain: the AGRIS AP to harvest and exchange quality metadata
This paper focuses on the AGRIS Application Profile (AGRIS AP), a standard created specifically to enhance description, exchange and subsequent retrieval of agricultural Document-Like Information Objects (DLIOs). The AGRIS AP provides a minimum interoperability layer through which agricultural information can be described and exchanged. The standard, developed in light of the new AGRIS vision, offers the flexibility to enhance the quality of description of agricultural information resources. The paper discusses the advantages of the AGRIS AP as opposed to the current standards by pointing out its strengths, its possible applications and how it will be further developed in the future
