A Registry of Collections and their Services: from Metadata to Implementation
The JISC Information Environment Service Registry (IESR) is a machine-to-machine middleware shared service providing a single central catalogue of quality descriptions of collections of resources available to researchers, learners and teachers in the UK, along with details of the services that provide access to those collections. The collections and services are described according to a set of metadata, which is defined by IESR, but is based on open standards wherever possible. The prototype registry is implemented as an XML repository indexed with the Cheshire II information retrieval software, with an associated metaregistry to support browsing and data capture. Several interfaces for server-toserver retrieval of IESR XML descriptions are available, as well as a Web interface
Towards a Language for Metadata Schemas for Interoperability
In order for metadata to be interoperable, its schema must be able to precisely describe its terms, context as well as semantic and syntactic constraints. A Metadata Model Based on the Concept of Structured Digital Object(SDO) and Its Application in Digital Libraries--From Concept to Prototype System
Metadata is data about data. It is considered an ideal and a very useful solution in describing/managing resources on the Internet. Especially, in the digital library field, metadata plays an important role for integrating digital resources and offering information service. However, from users standpoint, information service offered nowadays by any digital library is unable to satisfy their diversified needs, such as, knowledge information, individualization information, reusable and sharable information. A metadata model based on a new concept is required. As an extension of our previous research issue, we proposed the concept of Structured Digital Object (SDO is an abbreviation). SDOs are used for reorganizing/restructuring existing digital resources, because SDO set is structured data about data, this paper call it metadata. Using the metadata model based-concept of SDO, restructure various existing resources in existing digital libraries, form the so-called "Global Digital Library". The Global Digital Library can adopt Web Services for information services. It can solve not only interoperability problems among heterogeneous resources, heterogeneous systems and operating systems, but also can meet individual user need to different granularities information. We also used Topic Maps to associate SDOs with information resources that can be located in existing digital libraries or the global digital library. Furthermore, because all the metadata is described by XML, achieve reusing, sharing information. In the paper, we give some demonstrations to approve the points described above
Metadata element sets in the CISMeF Quality-Controlled Health Gateway
Quality-controlled subject gateways are Internet services which apply a selected set of targeted measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to operate a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display an extensive description and indexing of these resources with standards-based metadata. Objective: Several metadata element sets are proposed to describe, index and qualify health resources to be included in a French quality-controlled health gateway called CISMeF. The main objectives were to enhance Internet health document retrieval and navigation, and to allow interoperability with other Internet services. Results: The Dublin Core metadata element set is used to describe and index all Internet health resources included in CISMeF. For teaching resources, some elements from IEEE1484 Learning Object Metadata are also used. For evidenced-base medicine resources, specific metadata are employed which assess the health content quality. The HIDDEL metadata set is used to enhance transparency, trust and quality of health information on the Internet. Conclusion: Comprehensive metadata element sets can be extremely useful to describe, index and assess health resources on the Internet in a quality-controlled subject gateway. Machine-readable metadata creates an Semantic Web which is more efficient for end-users as compared to the current Web
The Design of Metadata Schemas for Chinese Cultural Celebrities' Manuscript Library
Metadata is essential to the semantic discovery of a digital librar y .A lot of metadata standards have been issued in recent years, but few standards or guidelines are actually implemented. Practitioners are always suffering from no guidelines or pilot projects can be referenced when developing digital library applications. The situation does no good to overcome interoperability problems between applications. This paper summarized the design of metadata schemas for Chinese Cultural Celebrities' Manuscript Library (CCCML), which is a branch of Shanghai Library. In practicing a formalized and normalized way to implement the merits of metadata for CCCML, and overcome the confusion of using metadata, we experienced an approach in deriving a set of principles, delivering an outline of methodology, conducting a procedure for the practice, and developing the specification of the schemas, as well as the implementation of the schemas in the CCCML digital library system
XMetaDiss--Metadata for ETDs in Germany
In the project a new metadata set "XMetaDiss" for online university theses and dissertations (ETDs) is being developed. This metadata set is supposed to relieve the set “MetaDiss”. XMetaDiss is based on DCMI of 2004 and will be used in Germany for interchange of metadata and corresponding full text of online university theses and dissertations (ETDs). The potential of XMetaDiss consists in the use for an automatic compiling-process of metadata by OAI protocol, the targeted compatibility with the NDLTD set ETD-MS, the use of hierarchical patterns and the simple transformation potential by means of XSLT into other metadata formats. The embedding within an international framework points to a high acceptance of a new metadata format for ETDs, corresponding to the state of the art
METS-Based Cataloging Toolkit for Digital Library Management System
This toolkit is designed for the Digital Library Management System of Tsinghua University (TH-DLMS). The aim of TH-DLMS is to build up a platform to preserve various kinds of digitalized resources, manage distributed repositories and provide kinds of service for research and education. This toolkit fulfills the cataloging and preservation functions of TH-DLMS. METS (Metadata Encoding and T ransmission Standard) encoded documents are used as the final storage format of metadata, including descriptive metadata, structural metadata and administrative metadata, and submitted to a management system based on Fedora (Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture)
Metadata Harvesting Framework in P2P-Based Digital Libraries
This paper reviews the main efforts in the research of harvesting metadata records in distributed digital libraries environment. The advantages and remained issues are briefly presented in order to have a comparison in our new approaches. A general scenario of integrating metadata in Peer-to-Peer based environment is introduced with respect to three situations, such as sharing a common schema; different schema but in the same community; different schema and community. There are many issues in the framework, whilst in this paper we present our approaches in extending OAI metadata harvesting protocol to fulfill the requirements in P2P network and adopting popular inference engine for heterogeneous schema mappings. Additionally, a rough idea is also presented for locating peer in such a framework
A methodology for metadata modelling--depth for a flat world
The recognition of the value of metadata continues to rise, and accordingly metadata frameworks are ever more widespread, they grow more comprehensive and they become increasingly complex. This rise in quantity, size, and complexity calls for a methodology that supports metadata design. Information modelling techniques as they are routinely employed in information system design and other domains are well suited for this task offering both visualisation techniques and an entire design methodology. Above all, information models help to manage complexity and leverage communication, thereby promoting reuse and interoperability. Already some metadata initiatives successfully employed modelling techniques building on the large body of existing experience in this area, yet these techniques remain to be widely adopted in the metadata world. Information modelling techniques allow visualisation for intuitive interpretation and clear communication, facilitate a structured approach to design, and create new perspectives on existing metadata models. This paper describes the application of information modelling to metadata. It also provides orientation where the metadata community can further extend their modelling skills to create quality metadata models with a robust design
