Finnish National Ontologies for the Semantic Web -- Towards a Content and Service Infrastructure
Get PDFWe present a national ontology development and service framework being developed in Finland in 2003-2007. The framework is based on a set of related core ontologies, most notably on a national upper ontology based on the commonly used Finnish General Thesaurus YSA maintained by the National Library of Finland. The framework implements three ontology services by a web-based system ONKI. Firstly, ONKI supports distributed collaborative development and versioning of interdependent ontologies. Secondly, external cataloging and indexing systems can use ONKI as a web service for ontology-based annotations. Thirdly, information retrieval systems can use ONKI for disambiguating keyword meanings for conceptbased search on the Semantic Web
Use of the MPEG-7 standard as metadata framework for a location scouting system -- An evaluation study
No full textThe paper presents an evaluation study about the application of the MPEG-7 standard to the metadata associated with a database supporting identification, characterization, classification and referencing of film shooting locations. The metadata describes photos taken at each location, as well as site characteristics, mainly according to a standard taxonomy and vocabulary in the domain of landscape and environment. Not only should the metadata schema allow conventional queries, but it must also be suited for advanced search functionalities such as similaritybased image retrieval. We also discuss the advantages and shortcomings of MPEG-7 for this application
MarcOnt -- Integration ontology for bibliographic description formats
No full textFor interoperability between digital libraries a number of bibliographic description standards have been introduced. Some of them, like MARC21 are usually implemented in classic library systems, while new digital libraries tends to support semantically richer formats like Dublin Core or BibTeX. Although it is possible to translate back and forth between these standards, a lot of information in lost while translating from MARC21. We present MarcOnt an ontology that is based on MARC21, BibTeX and Dublin Core. We elaborate on the purpose and features of MarcOnt ontology. We describe schemata that provide underlying concepts to MarcOnt ontology. We provide an example on differences between those standards and a set of rules that are used to translate to and from MarcOnt ontology-based semantic descriptions. Orchestrating metadata enhancement services: Introducing Lenny
No full textHarvested metadata often suffers from uneven quality to the point that utility is compromised. Although some aggregators have developed methods for evaluating and repairing specific metadata problems, it has been unclear how these methods might be scaled into services that can be used within an automated production environment. The National Science Digital Library (NSDL), as part of its work with INFOMINE, has developed a model of service interaction that enables loosely-coupled third party services to provide metadata enhancements to a central repository, with interactions orchestrated by a centralized software application. Web services for genre vocabularies

A set of experimental services for genre vocabularies are provided through the MS Office Research pane, a built-in feature of Internet Explorer (IE) when users have loaded MS Office 2003. Web browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox and Opera, also provide side-bars which could be used to deliver loosely-coupled Web services
Metadata at the Library of the National Congress of Chile: a multidisciplinary experience
No full textA description of the work methodology and the study experience for the generation and implementation of a metadata format model used for the development of the Digital Library Project of the Chilean National Congress Library. This metadata model was generated because of the need to describe, find, manage, and retrieve electronic information resources, as well as integrate contents and structure. We worked with all the documents produced by the organization for parliamentary library, information and research. These documents are made available on-line on the library web page. The process and workflows used for the development of this project are included. They are permanently tested for continuous improvements to comply with the requirements of the information products and the demands of technological development
Using controlled vocabularies to manage resource relationships: The KMODDL experience
Get PDFThe Kinematic Models for Design Digital Library (KMODDL) exemplifies digital collections in which groups of objects are versions of the same resource and which resources are related to one another taxonomically. Other objects in the collection are supplementary materials that explicitly cite the primary KMODDL resources. To manage the complex relationships among KMODDL objects while maintaining the DC one-to-one principle, metadata developers established controlled vocabulary encoding schemes that linked related objects. The solution implemented enables users to find all versions of a resource and all supplementary materials that cite the resource in a single search
Architecting a Cross-Disciplinary Thesaurus for the Semantic Web
No full textAn environmental health science thesaurus is needed to facilitate Semantic Web operations and aid with problem solving in this important cross-domain area. This paper demonstrates the need for an environmental health science thesaurus and reviews metadata generation research that highlights the importance of subject metadata. A conceptual design for building a cross-disciplinary metathesaurus using shared ontologies and other Semantic Web technologies is presented. The design emphasizes a dynamic, distributed approach to thesaurus construction, and builds on Semantic Web developments, especially the integration of multiple ontologies. The paper concludes by identifying candidate terminological sources and identifying a major challenge
A Study on Audiovisual Metadata
No full textAudiovisual resources are expanding rapidly these days. Large amounts of these complicated materials could lead to serious problems in resource description, representation and organization. Supported by the National Social Science Foundation of China, the project entitled Innovative Study on Audiovisual Metadata and its Retrieval has been conducted since 2002. During the preparation phase, the status ofaudiovisual information resources and their characteristics were analyzed; general users' and managers' needs were examined, and existing metadata methods and projects on audiovisual resources were investigated and explored. Based on those constructive and helpful findings, the Audiovisual Metadata Set was developed. This paper introduces the principles of the Set’s design and provides an overview of its content. The work is still in progress and the discussions presented here are preliminary in nature. A great many tasks are foreseen and will need to be undertaken, to establish this Set
