Use of Dublin Core metadata for describing and retrieving digital journals
This article summarises the experience of applying Dublin Core metadata to digital journal articles. Some of the problems encountered during this process are discussed
Retrieval of Italian legal literature: a case of semantic search using legal vocabulary
Retrieval of legal information and in particular of legal literature is examined in conjunction with the creation of the Portal to Italian legal doctrine developed by the Institute of Theory and Techniques of Legal Information (ITTIG) of the National Research Council of Italy. Subject searching is a major requirement for Italian legal literature users and a solution is described for the retrieval of legal literature's resources. Such solution is based on the exploitation of Dublin Core metadata for both data coming from structured repositories and for web documents, as well as the use of a controlled vocabulary list prepared for accessing indexed articles of the DoGi -- Dottrina Giuridica database. Technical specifications are illustrated as well as advantages and limitations of such solution
Was CIMI too early? Dublin Core and Museum Information: metadata as cultural heritage data
In 2000, CIMI reported on the use of Dublin Core metadata in the museum context and proposed a broader set of elements for museums. This paper examines that decision in the light of developments in the DCMES and reaches a different conclusion. The conclusion is based on experience with a virtual museum of Indigenous culture when metadata application profiles and schema cross-walks were available, unlike when CIMI investigated the same issue. In particular, it is now possible to use rich descriptions (data) and Semantic Web technologies and maintain the interoperability of Dublin Core metadata
SKOS Core: Simple knowledge organisation for the Web
This paper introduces SKOS Core, an RDF vocabulary for expressing the basic structure and content of concept schemes (thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading lists, taxonomies, terminologies, glossaries and other types of controlled vocabulary). SKOS Core is published and maintained by the W3C Semantic Web Best Practices and Deployment Working Group. The main purpose of this paper is to provide an initial basis for establishing clear recommendations for the use of SKOS Core and DCMI Metadata Terms in combination. Also discussed are management policies for SKOS Core and other RDF vocabularies, and the relationship between a 'SKOS conceptscheme' and an 'RDFS/OWL ontology'

Promoting accessibility by using metadata in the framework of a semantic-web driven CMS
Web content accessibility for impaired people has been mainly addressed by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) developed by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the W3C Consortium. Those guidelines have proved to be good diagnostic means for testing accessibility for different types of impairments, as well as for guiding the development of accessible content. A further step would be to promote discovery of material having appropriate accessibility support, as well as the adjustment of control and display of resources to meet user accessibility needs and preferences. The last two challenges have been addressed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium in the IMS-AccessForAll (ACCMD) and the IMS Learner Information Profile (ACCLIP) specifications. Although IMS has approached both goals in a learning framework, both accessibility specifications pay a special attention to impaired users' needs. As a first step, in this paper we survey how far IMS accessibility specifications cover WCAG, and discuss the convenience of extending it to the whole WAI guidelines. Secondly, we argue how accessibility could be considered as a key issue for promoting reusability. We continue explaining why using a semantic framework (such as the MPEG-7 semantic tool, RDF or OWL) for describing textual and contextual information in a standardized manner could promote both, accessibility and reusability. Finally, we explain how some accessibility issues have been already addressed by XimetriX's ximDEX, a semantic-web Content Management System (CMS). We conclude proposing a plan to better integrate the accessibility specifications and contextual description tools into that CMS
Use of learning object vocabulary in GEM queries
Metadata applications have developed local controlled vocabulary to meet information needs of users, but little is known about what vocabularies users use in searching for information. This paper reports the findings from an analysis of a digital library's query log. The analysis addresses questions of to what extent users use controlled vocabulary in resource discovery and what non-controlled vocabulary users use in their resource discovery. The authors discuss what is missing between the controlled and non-controlled vocabulary and how we can integrate user query terms into a learning object vocabulary for improving learning object representation and discovery
