    A framework for the standardized description of handwritten annotations

    In this paper we introduce a novel way for the standardized description of handwritten annotations onan electronic document. This approach allows it on theone hand to describe the annotation itself which means the geometric representation. On the other hand, information about the handwritten annotation likeauthor, type, or the text it refers to can also be stored together with the annotation. Furthermore, since ourapproach is based on Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) which is based on XML, it nicely fits into the structure of a Document Object Model (DOM).     Metadata for improving dynamic tourist packages

    The use of Semantic Web technologies allows us to annotate information sources on tourism services and products with the concepts included in a defined ontology. The enriched information can be used to match tailored package holidays to client preferences and according to real time availability. This paper presents the ANOTA project approach to aggregation of tourism information according to user and destination management strategy. The main hypothesis is that an official promotional tourist information portal can integrate tourism information from different sources and present it in an aggregated way, according to current user search and marketing strategy

    Automating multilingual metadata vocabularies

    Markup is based on mnemonics (i.e. element names, attribute names and attribute values). These mnemonics have meaning, being this one of the most interesting features of markup. Human understanding of this meaning is lost when the encoder doesn’t have a good command of the language the mnemonics are based on. By "multilingual markup" we refer to the use of tags built with mnemonics in one’s own language, but still following the rules of the original markup vocabulary. In this paper we show the benefits of using multilingual markup vocabularies, especially in large digital library projects, and we describe our work to automate the use of multilingual vocabularies, including the translation of DC to Catalan, French, German and Spanish

    The Iberoamerican and Caribbean Virtual Library (in spanish, BVIC)) is a coordinated project between the University of Colima and UNESCO, it was born in 1999 and has the goal of create a great digital library for the Iberoamerican and Caribbean region. It is a consortium open to national, university, public and institutional libraries, and is currently available the 3.0 version called "El Dorado". It is an initiative of free software y free contents for the users. An important element of this virtual library model is the implementation of a methodology, structured in three parts; 1. information digitization, 2. client-server system Z39.50 and 3. the register guide of information resources, through the utilization of Dublin Core, GILS (Government Information Locator Service) and MARC21 metadata standards, for the objectives and thematic of this conference we'll focus on the description of this model of metadata

    Growing vocabularies for plant identification and scientific learning

    This paper reports on U-PLanT's (University of North Carolina Plant Language Team) vocabulary solutions, including Project OpenKey vocabulary developments. The paper explores the meaning of vocabulary; discusses plant keys, plant taxonomy, and descriptive vocabulary used for plant identification; introduces U-PLanT’s research and development activities and current inquiry. Vocabulary solutions presented include a suite of vocabulary tools, a preliminary process model with steps for the development of vocabulary tools, and guiding principles for the development of descriptive plant vocabulary. This work has been conducted to address the student/scientist vocabulary gap and facilitate student access to primary scientific resources found in education digital initiatives

    A common vocabulary to facilitate the exchange of web accessibility evaluation results

    Web accessibility evaluations are significantly different from document validations; they are not based on determining conformance with specifications of formal grammars but are often more rule-based methodologies encompassing sequences of atomic tests to determine conformance to guidelines. While some of these tests may not be automatable by current computer technology and require human judgment to determine the results, evaluation tools often vary considerably in their coverage and reliability for tests that are automatable. These differences in tool performances are probably unavoidable in practice; however, they cause notable discrepancies in the efficiency and quality of the conformance evaluations. This paper discusses the practical implications of the Evaluation and Report Language; a vendor neutral vocabulary to facilitate the aggregation of test results generated by different evaluation tools in order to maximize the benefit from their respective features. The paper will also highlight the importance of this language to the objectives of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
