The Semantic Network Service -- Supporting Heterogeneous Environmental Information Systems
This paper describes aim, technology and prospects of the 'Semantic Network Service' – SNS which has been developed by the Umweltbundesamt (UBA, Federal Environment Agency of Germany) and is integrated in and used by several environmental and geographical information systems. SNS offers the possibility to share controlled environmental vocabulary and to boost the search and retrieval performance of environmental information systems
Semantic mediacasting and collaborative feed sharing
This paper presents a novel architecture of a Semantic Mediacasting System describing Mediacast feeds in RDF instead of currently used RSS2.0. We have built a centralized semantic repository which can be queried for subscription and sharing of feeds and also collaborative feed sharing mechanism where a user fetches subscribed feeds and associated media content and shares it with his neighbors, acting as a Pseudo-server
Encoding Library of Congress Subject Headings in SKOS: Authority control for the Semantic Web
This paper will explore using XSLT stylesheets to translate LCSH Authority Records from MARC/XML or MADS XML formats into RDF documents according to the SKOS project's Quick Guide to Publishing a Thesaurus on the Semantic Web. Creating an RDF Data Store that represents the content of LCSH will have tremendous long-term benefits in allowing a greater breadth of applications to make full use of the relationships between concepts provided by LC Subject Headings
Developing cultural heritage preservation databases based on Dublin Core data elements
Preserving our cultural heritage – from fragile historic textiles such as national flags to heavy and seemingly solid artifacts recovered from 9/11 – requires careful monitoring of the state of the artifact and environmental conditions. The standard for a web-accessible textile fiber database is established with Dublin Core elements to address the needs of textile conservation. Dynamic metadata and classification standards are also incorporated to allow flexibility in recording changing conditions and deterioration over the life of an object. Dublin core serves as the basis for data sets of information about the changing state of artifacts and environmental conditions. With common metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, this critical preservation knowledge can be utilized by a range of scientists and conservators to determine optimum conditions for slowing the rate of deterioration, as well as comparative use in the preservation of other artifacts
SKOS: Requirements for standardization
This paper poses three questions regarding the planned development of the Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) towards W3C Recommendation status. Firstly, what is the fundamental purpose and therefore scope of SKOS? Secondly, which key software components depend on SKOS, and how do they interact? Thirdly, what is the wider technological and social context in which SKOS is likely to be applied and how might this influence design goals? Some tentative conclusions are drawn and in particular it is suggested that the scope of SKOS be restricted to the formal representation of controlled structured vocabularies intended for use within retrieval applications. However, the main purpose of this paper is to articulate the assumptions that have motivated the design of SKOS, so that these may be reviewed prior to a rigorous standardization initiative
Toward a collection-based metadata maintenance model
In this paper, the authors identify key entities and relationships in the operational management of metadata catalogs that describe digital collections, and they draft a data model to support the administration of metadata maintenance for collections. Further, they consider this proposed model in light of other data schemes to which it relates and discuss the implications of the model for library metadata maintenance operations
Informational resources of Portal Cuba.cu. Description with metadata Dublin Core format
This paper show the use of the Dublin Core (DC) format for the administration and description of the resources of information in the Portal Cuba.cu, created by the Enterprise of Information Technologies and Advanced Telematic Services (CITMATEL), with the subject to facilitate the retrieval of information. A guide was made based in DC format that permitted the description of the resources of information in the Portal
BDNG: A Dublin Core-based architecture for digital libraries
Digital Libraries will be one of the main ways to access structured information through the Internet. Information related to resources or objects is known as metadata. Several metadata models have been proposed; however, the model proposed by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) has demonstrated great utility in digital libraries. The simplicity and generality of DCMI has facilitated the deployment of digital libraries and their interoperability. This paper proposes DCMI as metadata model in our own Digital Library Architecture (Biblioteca Digital de Nueva Generación -BDNG). We have extended DCMI and used some elements of DC-Library application profile (DC-Lib) in addition to new elements not previously considered. This paper presents the metadata models for the following applications: digital library of EAFIT University (BDEeafit), integration of digital or referential libraries (BDMetaLib) and digital library for E-Learning systems (BDEI). This paper also describes the general architecture of BDNG
Towards accessible Semantic Web applications
The importance for Web applications to reach all kind of potential users and customers is being stressed by companies and public sectors. The standardization initiative for Web applications, WAI and the Universal Design framework establish useful rules for building accessible applications for any kind of disabled and non-disabled users. The proliferation of Semantic Web technologies and formal ontologies offer a technological opportunity for establishing automatic and advanced methods for accessible Web applications. In this work we introduce a method for publishing Semantic Web content that establishes separated stages for content selection and its presentation, through Semantic Portal. We are applying some of those principles to a portal devoted to international affairs
