Implementing an institutional repository for digital archive communities: Experiences from National Taiwan University
This paper presents an empirical study of expanding and extending DSpace digital repository system for an academic institution. National Taiwan University created a portal web site, the Digital Archives Resource Centre (DARC), to provide the digital archives communities with preservation base for their rich research materials, and to provide the public with a helpful information retrieval service. Several modifications and extensions for the DSpace system are made in order to integrate various database resources with different formats among university departments. In this paper, we will present our empirical case in which adjustments of the DSpace system are made in areas such as data submission, metadata mapping, digital rights management, user interface and visualization. Our discussion will be focused on the useful applications in which digital archives communities benefit from the adapted DSpace system in disseminating their contents and long-term preservation within NTU campus. We will also discuss the ways in which the users benefit from the new system for searching and using digital archives
Using the DC Abstract Model to support application profile developers
In this paper, we consider the use of the DCMI Abstract Model as a potential vehicle for communication between developers of metadata application profiles and system developers. We note that it is not intended to be a developer's tool and consider what would make it so while maintaining its semantic integrity so designers of Application Profiles could also use it. We propose a UML compliant model of the DCAM as a first step towards the final development of a UML meta-model that will allow for the use of valid UML by those developing DC conformant Application Profiles. A number of characteristics of the DCAM are analysed and refinements suggested to enable a UML-conformant version of the DCAM which is required to build a new UML metamodel for DC Application profile developers
Signed metadata: Method and application
As metadata providers increase in number and diversity, and additional contexts for metadata use are identified, issues of trust, provenance and identity gain in relevance. Use of a publickey infrastructure (PKI) is discussed for digital signature of metadata records, providing evidence of the identity of the signer and the authenticity of the information within the record. Two methods are suggested; firstly, the W3C XML-Signature, and secondly, identification of a minimal set of metadata elements that enable signature verification across various character sets and formats, using the OpenPGP standard. Possible strategies for handling annotation within this infrastructure are suggested. Finally, some use cases are briefly discussed
DCMI abstract model analysis: Resource model
The importance that DCMI abstract model is acquiring as a metadata model scheme reference has motivated the work of the present analysis. This research has as an objective to make easy its understanding and contribute, from our experience in the use of UML model language revision proposals that improve the notation and representation of some concepts included in the resource model that is included in DCAM. Finally, the model in UML is included, incorporating the recommendations on notation and representations of the concepts of the original model
Eureka! Dublin Core based metadata supports the Archimedes Palimpsest Manuscript Imaging Program
Digital imaging of the Archimedes Palimpsest offers a complex set of metadata challenges. The thousand-year-old manuscript contains the earliest known copies of some of Archimedes unique mathematical works, overwritten with a book of prayer. Digital imaging of this manuscript is yielding a large and rich volume of data. The Archimedes Palimpsest team has developed the Archimedes Palimpsest Metadata Standard using the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set as the core metadata for this effort. The need for spatial metadata to support a complex range of image data has required the integration of metadata
standards based on those originally developed for geospatial imaging from space. The result is a unique manuscript imaging standard to support digital "scriptospatial" data accessible by a range of users on the Internet as part of this dynamic, ongoing program
Towards an interoperability framework for metadata standards
This paper presents a conceptual metadata framework intended to support the development of interoperable metadata standards and applications. The model rests on the fundamental concept of an "abstract model" for metadata, as exemplified by the DCMI Abstract Model, and is based on concepts and ideas that have developed over the years within the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. The model thus incorporates the concepts of metadata vocabularies, schemas, formats and application profiles into a single framework that can be used to analyse and compare metadata standards, and aid in the process of harmonization of metadata standards. In this paper, the model is used to compare the Dublin Core metadata standard and the IEEE LOM standard. Some fundamental differences between the two standards are discussed briefly, and important gaps in the current set of Dublin Core metadata specifications are noted
Metadata towards an e-research cyberinfrastructure: The case of French PhD theses
This paper analyses metadata practices and needs in the French research community. It focuses on PhD theses whose life-cycle is totally controlled by the academic institutions. It uses information treatments dealing with setting up research policy as samples for an eresearch orientation. Dublin Core as a tool for interoperability: Common presentation of data from archives, libraries and museums
Over the last years there has been an increasing focus on co-operation between archives, libraries and museums – particularly in local and regional contexts. This was the reason for setting up the Danish ALM standard committee appointed by the three national authorities for the ALM sectors. In February 2006 a report was completed by the committee. Dublin Core is recommended as the common format for content information to which selected parts of individual databases can be mapped. The selection is based on relevance of data according to search and presentation. The 15 basis DC elements are complemented with DC refinements, Administrative Components and supplements from the developed dkdcplus schema. XML is recommended as exchange format and a XML schema called dkabm collects XML schemas belonging to the built-in content formats.
With the dkabm as starting point, Dublin Core as basis for technical interoperability between different domains is analysed. The analysis covers both the content that is processed and the handling of relation databases when mapping to record-based formats like Dublin Core. Furthermore the chosen extensions to Dublin Core are analysed according to possible disadvantages of Dublin Core as exchange format. The conclusion is that Dublin Core is useful. There are some minor disadvantages, but no alternatives
