Annotation Profiles: Configuring Forms to Edit RDF
Most of today's generic annotation tools for Semantic Web metadata (RDF) are designed for experts. People with no or little knowledge about RDF are therefore forced to use simplified and often domain-specific tools that work with fixed sets of metadata elements. This paper introduces the Annotation Profile Model as a configuration mechanism from which annotation tools can be automatically generated. The intention is to encourage metadata- or domain experts to define annotation profiles according to metadata standards/schemas or combinations thereof. This will allow end-users or administrators to select appropriate annotation profiles for the task at hand, and then an editor will be provided by the underlying system. This paper discusses the design of the Annotation Profile Model, which consists of a data-capturing part (the Graph Pattern Model) and a presentation part (the Form Template model). An implementation that can generate both Web-based and standalone editors is also introduced
From AGROVOC to the Agricultural Ontology Service / Concept Server: An OWL model for creating ontologies in the agricultural domain
This paper illustrates the conversion from a traditional thesaurus in agriculture (AGROVOC) to a new system, the Agricultural Ontology Service Concept Server (AOS/CS). The Concept Server will serve as a multilingual repository of concepts in the agricultural domain providing ontological relationships and a rich, semantically sound terminology. The Food and Agriculture Organization recently developed the underlying model for this new system in the Web ontology language OWL. In this paper, we describe the purpose of this conversion and the use of OWL and highlight in particular the core features of the developed OWL model. We go on to explain how it evolves and differs from the traditional thesaurus approach
Linking legal sources in a shared web environment
The functionality of the Portal to legal literature, which is under development at ITTIG, is described, focusing on a linking mechanism created to allow navigation between statutory rules, judicial cases and legal literature pieces of work. Reference is made to previous works carried out by Italian institutions for the identification of legislation and case law resources through URN identifiers. The design of a URN for legal literature material is planned to ensure cross-access to legal sources on the basis of user surveys carried out for the purpose of better customize the Portal's services. The main features of the proposed URN for legal literature material are described as well as tools developed for the Portal based on an OpenURL resolver mechanism in order for users to start from the examination of a law (legislation) to its interpretation (legal literature) and further to analyse the enforcement of that law in judicial cases (case law)
Redalyc OAI-PMH: The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (Protocol Version 2.0)
With the arrival of the new communication systems and the “disappearance” of the borderlines, new challenges emerged to scientific production and spreading. We recognized that great part of that production was unknown and its area of influence is limited. We stated what we already knew, that social sciences were under-represented in databases that determined “the great current of science” and that Latin American scientific journals would hardly enter the legitimized databases. The adoption of the Dublin Core format in Redalyc - that administers a wide database of arbitrated scientific articles of and on Ibero-America it has required to analyze the structure of metadata, in order to implement the protocol OAI-PMH, to fortify the search, recovery and indexing the database through harvesters and search engines over the Internet by making all the articles of its collection available, facing the challenge to give visibility to the Ibero- American scientific production
A Metadata registry from vocabularies up: The NSDL registry project
The NSDL Metadata Registry is designed to provide humans and machines with the means to discover, create, access and manage metadata schemes, schemas, application profiles, crosswalks and concept mappings. This paper describes the general goals and architecture of the NSDL Metadata Registry as well as issues encountered during the first year of the project's implementation
Using FRBR for the selection and adaptation of accessible resources
In this paper we consider the suitability of the Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model for an inclusive information environment. The AccessForAll approach to digital information asserts that every user has an equal right to information resources. The FRBR study identified bibliographic records users and, for them, determined a minimum set of entities, and their attributes and relationships, to determine a model of a record or resources that was necessary to satisfy what were, at the time, determined to be recommended user requirements. Our examination of the FRBR model shows that, in fact, more attributes are probably necessary for an inclusive environment
Virtual reality learning objects of molecular structures
Chemistry students experience a number of problems during the learning process in subjects like molecular biology, biochemistry and others, particularly when they study molecular structure, since it is generally complex and abstract. This paper describes a proposal of learning object development to support understanding of molecular structures, using multimodal virtual reality technology. This paper also comments the development of a test bed for analyzing the possible applications and limitations of the technology and pedagogical contents of learning objects in virtual reality
Memex Metadata (M2) for reflective learning
This paper reports on metadata research and development supporting memory and reflective learning that is being conducted as part of the Memex Metadata (M2) for Student Portfolios project, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The paper reviews learning, memory, and reflective learning strategies; introduces the M2 project; presents a reflective learning scenario for a plant biology class; and reviews two metadata developments underlying the M2 project: 1) A context awareness framework (CAF), and 2) An extended metadata framework. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of future research activities
Identity matters: Constructing social identities through ontology-based metadata
Students' understanding of history is often shaped by the social identity they bring to the classroom. Presenting history from the perspective of social identity can be an effective way to connect students to the past. Digital libraries are filled with primary sources that could be used to support this type of learning activity. Traditional descriptive metadata assigned to digital objects often fails to capture specific social identity aspects of the content as well as the relationships between objects that are relevant in history teaching and learning. This paper describes the potential of ontologydriven metadata that represent social, familial, spatial, and temporal relationships between learning objects to help students and faculty construct historical meaning
