Metadata for WICRI, a Network of Semantic Wikis for Communities in Research and Innovation
This paper introduces metadata issues in the framework of the WICRI project, a network of semantic wikis for communities in research and innovation. A wiki can be related to an institution, to a research field (mainly, environment or ICT at this time), or to a regional entity. Metadata and semantic items play the strategic role to handle the quality and the consistency of the network. An important point deals with the “wiki way of working” in which a metadata specialist and a scientist, familiar with abstract formalisms, can work altogether, at the same time, on the same pages. Some first experiments of designing metadata are presented. A wiki, encyclopedia of metadata, is proposed, and related technical issues are discussed
From records to streams: Merging library and publisher metadata
This article announces the availability of a crosswalk between ONIX 2.1 and MARC 21 developed by OCLC and illustrates how it is used in the OCLC Metadata for Publishers project. To accomplish the goal of merging library and publisher metadata and anticipating the need to mine MARC records for other purposes, the design of the crosswalk, the corresponding software, and the application take records apart and process the fields individually, creating data streams that match the intended use of the ONIX standard and resemble the pre-Internet paradigm of Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, for describing materials and tracking them through a supply chain. Though this design works well enough to support commercial-grade processes, problems arise with mappings between physical descriptions in the two standards, which need to be more rigorously modeled or closely aligned. Nevertheless, the RDA/ONIX Framework, which is reviewed here, promises to reduce this obstacle
Extending RSS to Meet Central Bank Needs
The Federal Reserve wanted to use RSS to represent not only news, such as press releases, but also data, such as exchange rates. The Fed hoped to use one set of feeds to accommodate two different audiences for RSS, human readers (at one remove) and self-contained automated processes. While the different RSS specifications provide elements for traditional news items, they require extensions to handle data. Since central banks all tend to report the same sorts of information, the Fed joined with other central banks to create an extended specification that met their needs. This specification extends RSS 1.0, which is the more readily extended RSS specification. The extension uses elements from established metadata standards wherever it can, such as for language and audience, and adds elements when subjects are not found in those standards or are more particular to central banks, such as (monetary) currency. Although the central banks intend these new elements to be used primarily by machine processes, the element names have sufficient semantic transparency so that they can be understood by human readers
Towards Linked Education Data: Metadata Extraction Projects for Education Network Australia (edna)
This project report describes three different but related projects for edna (Education Network Australia), all of which undertake metadata extraction from a range of sources to facilitate the semantic annotation of collections of learning resources for Australian educators. A team of Information Officers at edna is responsible for building and maintaining a large collection of web-based learning resources with associated metadata. This process has been largely a manual approach at the individual item level. In an attempt to enhance the relevance and efficiency of edna’s own collection, a two-pronged approach has been taken: on the one hand harvesting user selection, evaluation and metadata through social bookmarking tools and on the other employing some automated metadata creation tools to increase efficiency of description. It is envisaged that user engagement will augment the quality, relevance and currency of the resources in edna for the community of users and the rich metadata collected from users and automated tools will enhance the metadata and extend the discoverability of the collection
Using Metadata for Query Refinement and Recommendation
Lengthy lists of search results are the fruit of both short queries and conventional Web search result displays. They are problematic for meeting user’s information needs. This paper describes topic extraction and representation from metadata, the first part of a project that will develop an interactive visual query refinement and recommendation (QRR) service to alleviate the problems due to lengthy lists of search results. The topic extraction uses the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm to mine the intra- and inter-document relations and represent them in topic and features. The paper presents how the LDA algorithm extracts topics and features from metadata records contained in NSDL search results, which will be used by an interactive visual QRR service in the next step of the project
Building a Strong Foundation with Dublin Core
When the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System needed to create a new metadata system, they decided to start with a time tested foundation; Dublin Core. The U.S. Central Bank consumes a variety of metadata including metadata that defines collections of data and metadata that describes variable level data. This project report follows the process used to create collection level metadata, variable level metadata, and retrofitting existing metadata to make it all usable by economists, financial analysts, and IT professionals
DigitalNZ ā-tihi o Aotearoa: Connecting the Digital Content of New Zealand: Advice, Open Standards and Interoperability.
DigitalNZ ā-tihi o Aotearoa is a nationwide initiative implemented by the National Library of New Zealand and an outcome of the government’s New Zealand Digital Content Strategy (2007). Intended as a long-term programme of work DigitalNZ aims to find ways to make New Zealand’s rapidly growing digital content more visible, discoverable and accessible in an ever-changing digital environment. DigitalNZ aims to connect New Zealand’s digital content from collections of significance and find ways for New Zealanders to engage in, use and reuse digital content. This poster reports on work to establish a framework for the adoption, dissemination and promotion of open digital standards to maintain the integrity of New Zealand’s digital content over time
A Semantic MediaWiki-Empowered Terminology Registry
Semantic Wikis leverage the power of the Semantic Web and Wiki technologies. This project report introduces an approach of utilizing Semantic MediaWiki in particular as a platform for designing, developing, and constructing a terminology registry. A full-fledged terminology registry should be built on an open, integrated infrastructure for terminology services. It not only registers various metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies, but also provides a collaborative development environment for constructing terminology resources. At the current stage, the project has focused on tools and techniques which deploy the semantic wiki method of modeling and managing terminology resources. Preliminary findings of this project will be discussed
Ontology-based meta-framework for metadata interoperability
In the current information environment where various types of resources coexist with heterogeneous formats of metadata standards, efforts have been made to achieve metadata interoperability in order to utilize multiple metadata standards and to (re)use existing metadata records by developing strategies, ranging from simple element mapping to complex structural modeling. To address the problems in metadata interoperability, this poster proposes a conceptual framework that mediates semantic, syntactical, and structural differences across heterogeneous standards. This framework functions as an external structure that systematically organizes components of standards, demonstrates component relationships, and reflects the framework of each standard. For these reasons, this conceptual framework may function as a relative metadata framework about frameworks of existing standards, that is, a meta-framework
Modeling Classification Systems in SKOS: Some Challenges and Best-Practice Recommendations
Representing classification systems on the web for publication and exchange within the SKOS framework continues to be a challenge. This paper focuses on the differences between classification schemes and other families of KOS that make it difficult to express classifications without sacrificing a large amount of their semantic richness. Issues resulting from the specific set of relationships between classes and topics that defines the basic nature of any classification system are discussed. Where possible, different solutions with SKOS and OWL are proposed and examined
