Database Issues in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
In recent years both the number and the size of organisational databases have increased rapidly. However, although available processing power has also grown, the increase in stored data has not necessarily led to a corresponding increase in useful information and knowledge. This has led to a growing interest in the development of tools capable of harnessing the increased processing power available to better utilise the potential of stored data. The terms "Knowledge Discovery in Databases" and "Data Mining" have been adopted for a field of research dealing with the automatic discovery of knowledge implicit within databases. Data mining is useful in situations where the volume of data is either too large or too complicated for manual processing or, to a lesser extent, where human experts are unavailable to provide knowledge. The success already attained by a wide range of data mining applications has continued to prompt further investigation into alternative data mining techniques and the extension of data mining to new domains. This paper surveys, from the standpoint of the database systems community, current issues in data mining research by examining the architectural and process models adopted by knowledge discovery systems, the different types of discovered knowledge, the way knowledge discovery systems operate on different data types, various techniques for knowledge discovery and the ways in which discovered knowledge is used
Speech Act Based Communication and Information Modeling with Demo
The field of speech act based modelling of information systems has attracted an increasing attention in recent years. On the basis of the research work of Winograd and Flores, several modelling approaches have been proposed. In this paper we discuss the speech act based modelling approaches in general and the DEMO approach in particular. Next to the discussion of theoretical foundations of this modelling approach we also illustrate the application of DEMO to a case study, and we report on the status of the resulting models for information systems design and business process optimisation
Reengineering in Australia: factors affecting success
Business process reengineering (BPR) is being used in many organisations worldwide to realign operations. Most of the research undertaken has been focused on North American or European practices. The study reported here replicates a US reengineering study in an Australian context by surveying large public and private sector Australian organisations. The study makes three main contributions by: (1) presenting a picture of BPR practices in Australia, (2) clarifying factors critical to the success of reengineering projects in Australia, and (3) providing a comparison of factors leading to success in Australian BPR projects with those found in the US
The Evolution of Electronic Marketplaces: an exploratory study of internet-based electronic within the American Independent Insurance Agency system
Evolving competitive, organisational and technology environments drive organisations to continually evaluate how information technology resources can be exploited for competitive value. The emergence of a global information infrastructure has spawned an entirely new area for competitive exploitation, electronic marketplaces. This paper first presents a review and synthesis of the conceptual and empirical literature on electronic marketplaces. Drawing upon multiple theoretical perspectives, we develop a framework for analysing their potential influences on market and industry structure. This conceptual framework is then applied to an empirical assessment of the potential of the Internet as an electronic marketplace for the American Independent Insurance Agency System
Strategic Systems? Only When They Work!
This paper presents the results of a sample survey of Australian organisations' approaches to business and information technology (IT) contingency planning. The survey was undertaken because there was a perception that coping with disaster is a much neglected aspect of management in Australia. It is an exploratory study that seeks to establish the current levels of awareness and preparedness. The findings reveal that most organisations are inadequately prepared and fail to take the issue seriously. Business continuity is not rated as a high priority
Evaluating Method Engineer Performance: an error classification and preliminary empirical study
We describe an approach to empirically test the use of metaCASE environments to model methods. Both diagrams and matrices have been proposed as a means for presenting the methods. These different paradigms may have their own effects on how easily and well users can model methods. We extend Batra's classification of errors in data modelling to cover metamodelling, and use it to measure the performance of a group of metamodellers using either diagrams or matrices. The tentative results from this pilot study confirm the usefulness of the classification, and show some interesting differences between the paradigms
Reengineering a Software Review Process with the Functions Based Process Analysis (FPA) Method
With the current popularity and success of the World Wide Web, the question. How can the WWW technology improve existing processes, is in the forefront of many managers' mind. This paper examines this question in the context of the software review process and proposes a method that helps us systematically answer it. The method, Function-based Process Analysis (FPA), represents a process as a function lattice, in which the functions that the process is to serve together with the subfunctions that implement these functions form a lattice. In FPA a technology like the WWW is also represented as a function lattice. FPA then exploits the uniform representation of both a process and a technology to help us systematically identify and examine the aspects of the process that can benefit most from the given technology. The paper illustrates these claims by applying the method and generating WWW-based alternatives to a software review process currently employed at a major company. More valuable than the specific alternatives generated, however, is the systematic way that the method provides for examining the relation between a process and a technology as well as the framework in which the relevant issues can be placed
Inter-Organisational Systems, Strategy and Structure: the case for planning environments
Electronic trade and commerce have brought inter organisational co-operation to the forefront of organisational strategies. However, inter-organisational systems (IOS) planning lacks appropriate methodological guidelines, and tends to be practised in an insular manner. This paper examines the development of systems in three interorganisational networks in Ireland in order to ascertain the planning that went into them. The networks studied are representative of three types of structural interdependencies - pooled, reciprocal and sequential. Although it is difficult to identify an activity that can be clearly labelled IOS planning, planning is integral to the development of all networks. The interdependencies influence planning processes and outcomes. For the pooled and reciprocal networks, the planning process gives a focus. For the sequential network, the main planning is done by the hub organisation, and extended to the spokes. Planning interactions across all networks illustrate similarities that reveal that existence of planning environments within which IOS planning takes place. These planning environments are proposed as being an appropriate basis for the development of IOS planning guidelines
