The effect of group counseling on hope with diverse undergraduates during sustainability-focused internship
Many adolescents report feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, and hopeless in the face of global climate change. These feelings are both valid and antithetical to the necessary hope and courage it takes to address real-world environmental crises and contribute to meaningful societal impact. The Green Teams Program, an internship-based experiential learning initiative, prepares young professionals with skills and knowledge needed to address these challenges and provides an intentionally inclusive and safe environment for students from all backgrounds to do so. This structured environment includes psychoeducational group counseling among other supports. Intern self-assessments revealed significant gains in measures of Hope, Agency, and Self-Clarity, likely attributed to the Program\u27s intentional and inclusive pedagogical practices. Results from a pre-and post-program assessment instrument, the Hope Action Inventory, indicated that participation in the Green Teams Program impacted individuals\u27 hope for the future and their ability to implement this hope into tangible steps toward their career development. The findings will inform and enhance existing and future STEM-focused experiential learning programs so that students from all backgrounds are well-supported to address the global challenges that impact their generations most

Preparing K-8 Teachers to Teach and Infuse Computer Science Across All Subjects
The rapid advancement of computing technology and increasing dependency on digital information impact the career paths and the lives of all current students. The dynamic nature of technology necessitates ongoing evaluation and adaptation of computer science (CS) curricula and teaching methodologies to prepare a technology-driven workforce. While an abundance of curriculum material is available, this experience paper highlights a project focused on development of resources by teachers to specifically align to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Computer Science and Design Thinking (CSDT). The work was designed by teachers for teachers as part of a professional learning community (PLC). The PLC aimed to provide learning opportunities, resources, and technical assistance to schools and districts. With the diverse demographics of the state, the PLC looked to expand access to equitable high-quality, standards-based computer science education for all K-12 students. The paper describes the methodology to create teacher-focused instructional materials based on a teacher PLC and survey data from 37 respondents, highlighting key insights, limitations, and recommendations for future improvements. This paper thus contributes to the existing literature by reaffirming the need for content resources and underscoring the role teachers play in ensuring computer science instruction is more accessible to teachers new to computer science education
Ferrate(VI) Transformation of Nitrogen in Secondary Wastewater Effluent: Implications for Water and Nutrient Management
Ferrate(VI) is a promising chemical agent for wastewater treatment. While targeting various contaminants, it can inevitably react with different water matrix constituents such as nitrogen (N) species. However, the reactions of ferrate(VI) with wastewater N compounds remain poorly understood. This study explores ferrate(VI)-mediated transformations of different N species in a secondary wastewater effluent. Ferrate(VI) oxidation minimally abated total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), while oxidizing dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) into dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), primarily nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), without noticeably altering ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) levels. Consequently, ferrate(VI) treatment increased the fraction of bioavailable, soil-leachable NO3--N while lowering the portion of less bioaccessible DON. This study reveals the ability of ferrate(VI) to retain overall nitrogen, improve its bioavailability, mitigate the precursors of harmful nitrogenous disinfection byproducts, and enhance nitrogen leachability in soil. These insights highlight the complex impacts of ferrate(VI)-enabled wastewater treatment on human and environmental health, water supply, and nutrient management in agriculture reuse
