    Understanding Gossip in the Workplace: The Impact of Personality and Emotional Intelligence

    Workplace communication is a constantly evolving process. In recent years, workplace gossip has been reframed as a more complex construct, with researchers increasingly recognizing its positive and functional aspects. The current study aimed to contribute to the gossip literature by examining how personality traits, specifically Neuroticism and Extraversion, predict workplace gossip, and whether Emotional Intelligence (EI) moderates these relationships. A sample of 185 full-time employees in the United States completed measures of personality, EI, and four types of gossip: negative gossip about supervisors and coworkers (NWGS and NWGC), and positive gossip about supervisors and coworkers (PWGS and PWGC). Stepwise regression analyses revealed that Neuroticism predicted greater engagement in NWGS, while Extraversion was positively associated with both PWGS and PWGC. Contrary to expectations, EI did not buffer these relationships; instead, it strengthened the association between Neuroticism and NWGS. These findings highlight the role of individual differences in workplace communication and suggest that EI may not always serve as a protective factor in interpersonal dynamics

    The TEAAM: The Development of a Trauma Assessment Measure for Late Adolescents and Emerging Adults

    Exposure to potentially traumatic events is common among adolescents and emerging adults. While outcomes to trauma exposure may vary, development of maladaptive symptoms and disorders, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is of great concern to clinicians, researchers, and advocates for youth. However, recent research has identified that existing trauma measures and the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition Text Revision criterion for event exposure for PTSD, Criterion A, fail to address specific types of events and experiences that may elicit post-traumatic stress responses. Subsequently, this dissertation aimed to review the existing literature regarding trauma and how it is measured in adolescents and emerging adults, with the goal of developing a new measure for trauma assessment in this population. The Trauma in Emerging Adults and Adolescents Measure (TEAAM) was drafted based on extant measures and literature suggesting the importance of different types of events (e.g., bullying, discrimination) and facets of events (e.g., frequency of events and subjective distress). The current study hypothesized that the TEAAM would show discriminant validity in its associations with PTSD symptoms and disparate constructs (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress); that it would demonstrate adequate specificity and sensitivity in predicting PTSD diagnosis; and that it would show appropriate test-retest reliability. In Study 1, 10 professionals in psychology were asked to review and suggest recommendations for improving the TEAAM. In Study 2, the modified TEAAM and additional measures were administered to a sample of 263 undergraduate students from a public northeastern university (128 of whom completed the TEAAM again two to four weeks later). Many of the TEAAM metrics demonstrated appropriate discriminant validity in its associations with PTSD symptoms. Similarly, several TEAAM metrics showed sensitivity and specificity in predicting PTSD diagnosis. Finally, the TEAAM showed appropriate test-retest reliability. Clinical implications of the TEAAM are discussed, along with potential avenues for future research

    Neuro-Immune Regulation of Feeding Behavior and Alcohol Intoxication in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and obesity are major public health concerns, contributing to more than 28 million deaths annually. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms underlying excessive alcohol and food consumption remain incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that neuro-immune crosstalk plays a pivotal role in feeding and alcohol-induced behaviors, with inflammation as a key pathological hallmark. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), traditionally recognized for their role in innate immunity, have recently been implicated in modulating neural responses to ethanol. However, the mechanisms of how TLR signaling influences feeding and alcohol-related behaviors remain largely unknown. To address this gap, we leveraged Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), which possesses a single TLR homolog, TOL-1, to investigate its role in feeding and ethanol-induced behaviors. Our findings demonstrate that TOL-1 signaling in neurons modulates feeding in a hunger-state-dependent manner, promotes turning behaviors to avoid noxious stimuli, enhances survival during exposure to high doses of ethanol by limiting oxidative stress, mitigates ethanol-induced intoxication, and suppresses ethanol-seeking behavior. Additionally, TOL-1 facilitates an easily extinguished learned aversion to ethanol, highlighting its involvement in adaptive behavioral responses. Together, these results reveal a previously unrecognized role for TLRs in regulating ingestion behaviors beyond immune defense and pathogen avoidance. By elucidating TOL-1’s function in C. elegans, this study provides insights into conserved molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol consumption and feeding behaviors. Understanding these interactions could inform novel therapeutic strategies targeting immune signaling pathways to mitigate excessive alcohol intake and metabolic dysfunction in higher organisms

    Understanding Premenstrual Syndrome Among College Students and Its Association with Dietary Patterns

    Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a complex symptom affecting females\u27 quality of life. Many studies have suggested that diet influences the experience of PMS. College students are more likely to be influenced by PMS, but little is known about this population. This study aimed to (1) identify the prevalence of PMS among female college students, (2) examine the association between PMS presence/severity and diet quality, and (3) explore common symptoms of PMS and how these affect students\u27 quality of life. A cross-sectional survey using convenience sampling was conducted from February to March 2025 at a university in northern New Jersey. An online questionnaire with both closed- and open-ended items covered demographics, the short Healthy Eating Index (sHEI), and premenstrual symptoms. The descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test, logistic regression, a paired sample t-test, and content analysis were performed. A total of 507 female students participated in the study, and 369 of them were included in the analysis. The presence of PMS was 33.6%. The mean sHEI score in the PMS group was 47.12 ± 11.50, with the mean scores in the No PMS group at 47.88± 8.90. There were no significant associations found between the presence/severity of PMS and diet quality. Common PMS symptoms frequently mentioned were bloating, cramps, and fatigue. The major impacts of PMS on life quality included decreased study effectiveness, challenges to daily activities, and social disengagement. Further research needs to validate the direction of the relationship between dietary patterns and PMS and to examine coping strategies for each premenstrual symptom to ensure the health of female students

    Assessing social vulnerability in Perth Amboy

    Perth Amboy, New Jersey, faces significant environmental and social challenges due to its industrial landscape, economic disparities, and high social vulnerability. This study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) to examine the relationship between social vulnerability and environmental burdens within the city. The research aims to determine whether communities with higher social vulnerability experience greater exposure to environmental hazards and reduced access to green infrastructure. To achieve this, the study will utilize census-tract level data from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, EPA EJScreen, NJDEP, and FEMA’s National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). GIS-based spatial analysis, including spatial joins, Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) for hotspot identification, and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), will be applied to assess the intersection of social vulnerability and environmental risks. Statistical methods, such as regression analysis, will be used to evaluate correlations between social vulnerability indicators and environmental exposure. The results will be visualized through social vulnerability index maps, heat maps of pollution exposure, and infographics summarizing key findings. By identifying at-risk areas, this research aims to contribute to equitable urban planning and disaster preparedness strategies for Perth Amboy

    Identification of the rate determining step in DNA photolyase

    Photolyase is an enzyme that repairs UV-induced DNA damage using a mechanism by which photolyase absorbs blue light to trigger light-induced electron transfer to the crosslinked pyrimidine dimers in DNA, reversing UV-induced damage. It is generally assumed that absorption of blue light is the rate limiting step in the mechanism. We have evidence that assumption may not be correct; the substrate binding or product release may be the rate determining step in the mechanism. We are investigating the nature of the rate determining step by changing the viscosity of the reaction mixture in our DNA assay to measure the effect on the turnover number for the protein
