Managing warehouse efficiency and worker discomfort through enhanced storage assignment decisions

No full text
Humans are at the heart of crucial processes in warehouses. Besides the common economic goal of minimising cycle times, we therefore add in this paper the human well-being goal of minimising workers' discomfort in the context of order picking. We propose amethodology for identifying the most suitable storage location solutions with respect to both goals. The first step in our methodology is to build data-driven empirical models for estimating cycle times and workers' discomfort. The second step of the methodology entails the use of these empirically grounded models to formulate a bi-objective assignment problem for assigning products to storage locations. The developed methodology is subsequently tested on two actual warehouses. The results of these practical tests show that clear trade-offs exist and that optimising only for discomfort can be costly in terms of cycle time. Based on the results, we provide practical guidelines for taking storage assignment decisions that simultaneously address discomfort and travel distance considerations.</p

A confirmatory approach for integrating neural and behavioral data into a single model

No full text
Recent decades have witnessed amazing advances in both mathematical models of cognition and in the field of cognitive neuroscience. These developments were initially independent of one another, but recently the fields have started to become interested in joining forces. The resulting joint modeling of behavioral and neural data can be difficult, but has proved fruitful. We briefly review different approaches used in decision-making research for linking behavioral and neural data, and also provide an example. Our example provides a tight link between behavioral data and evoked scalp potentials measured during mental rotation. The example model illustrates a powerful hypothesis-driven way of linking such data sets. We demonstrate the use of such a model, provide a model comparison against interesting alternatives, and discuss the conclusions that follow from applying such a joint model

Reference Values for Frequency Volume Chart and Uroflowmetry Parameters in Adolescent and Adult Enuresis Patients

Aims: Reference values of Frequency Volume Chart (FVC) and uroflowmetry parameters for adolescent and adult enuresis patients are lacking. In this study, we aim to describe those parameters, in order to interpret findings from FVCs and uroflowmetries in those patients. Methods: Retrospective, descriptive cohort study, concerning 907 patients aged 11 years and older, suffering from enuresis of at least one wet night per fortnight, treated in a secondary/tertiary centre, between 2003 and 2013. The main FVC parameters of interest were: maximum voided volume (MVV), 24 hr urine production and nocturnal urine volume (NUV) including first morning void (FMV). Nocturnal polyuria (NP) was defined based on both International Children's Continence Society (ICCS, 2014) and International Continence Society (ICS, 2002) definitions. Data of all patients were collected from the medical files. Results: Age had an impact on diurnal and nocturnal FVC parameters. Median MVV excluding FMV was 250 ml in the youngest, 11-year-old males and 363 ml in the eldest, >= 18-yr-old males. For females, these values were 230 ml and 310 ml. Median 24 hr urine production increased from 1,025 ml to 1,502 ml (males) and from 1,007 ml to 1,557 ml (females). Median NUV showed an increase from 387 ml to 519 ml (males) and from 393 ml to 525 (females). Forty-two percent of men and 30% of women had a small MVV (for age). Prevalence of NP differed when assessed by the ICS or the ICCS definition: following ICS guidelines, NP was present in 96% of our male and 93% of our female population, compared to 27% and 41%, respectively, following ICCS guidelines. Conclusions: Both small MVV and NP were found frequently in our adolescent and adult enuresis patients, which is in line with the current thoughts on causal factors. NP prevalence is quite different when using ICS or ICCS definitions, respectively. We would like to encourage the development of an unambiguous definition of NP to use both in pediatric and adult urology. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.</p

The UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol:The Chalenges of Trying to Clean One’s Own Nest

No full text
In the Tragedy of the Commons Hardin suggested that with respect to global commons we are trapped in a vicious circle where calculations of utility pushes us to keep polluting our own nest. This taken on a global scale has led to concerns about climate change and a realization that measures need to be taken to mitigate or adapt to its deleterious effects. The present Chapter briefly examines the history so far of the negotiations towards adopting climate change treaties, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of said documents. It then highlights the three main challenges in climate change regulation: the systemic (designing of international climate policy); the functional (normativity of COP/MOP decisions); and the adjudicative (application of state responsibility in climate change and invocation of the latter’s rules in international/domestic litigation)

Esthetic Evaluation of Anterior Single-Tooth Implants with Different Abutment Designs - Patients' Satisfaction Compared to Dentists' Observations

No full text
Purpose: To correlate patients' satisfaction and dentists' observations regarding two abutment designs used for single crowns in the esthetic zone: a divergent one (control) and a curved one (experimental), with special emphasis on muco-gingival esthetics.Materials and Methods: Twenty-six patients with nonadjacent missing teeth in the esthetic zone were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial (within-subject comparison). Two implants placed in each were restored using abutments of different geometry. Patients' appreciation was assessed on a visual analog scale (VAS) by recording answers to three questions, and dentists' appreciation was determined by means of the Pink Esthetic Score (PES) at T0 (crown cementation, baseline) and at T12 (1 year post-cementation). ANOVA with post hoc analysis was used to identify differences between groups and at different moments in time. Pearson correlations were calculated between all variables, both at T0 and at T12.Results: No statistically significant differences were found at any time between the control and experimental abutment design, either for the PES or for the VAS score. PES slightly improved after 1 year, as did the VAS rating related to functioning with the implant-crown compared to the natural teeth. All PES and VAS scores demonstrated highly significant correlation. Both patient satisfaction and professional appreciation of muco-gingival conditions after single implant treatment in the esthetic zone were high; however, the curved, experimental abutment design performed no better than the conventional, divergent type. Conclusion: Curved abutment design does not significantly impact crown or gingival esthetics as assessed by PES and VAS scored by dentists and patients, respectively.</p

Consistent estimation of linear panel data models with measurement error

No full text
Measurement error causes a bias towards zero when estimating a panel data linear regression model. The panel data context offers various opportunities to derive instrumental variables allowing for consistent estimation. We consider three sources of moment conditions: (i) restrictions on the covariance matrix of the errors in the equations, (ii) nonzero third moments of the regressors, and (iii) heteroskedasticity and nonlinearity in the relation between the error-ridden regressor and another, error-free, regressor. In simulations, these approaches appear to work well. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</p

Managing Bottom up Strategizing:Collective Sensemaking of Strategic Issues in a Dutch Bank

No full text
This paper discusses a bottom-up approach to strategizing in two member banks of a Dutch cooperative bank. In both banks, through a collective process of sensemaking, organisational participants evaluated their day-to-day experiences in order to identify strategic issues. The potential benefits of such approach include higher commitment for strategy and a greater willingness to change. However, the sensemaking occasions in the two banks were organised quite differently. In one bank they were highly structured, whilst the other bank employed a more laissez-faire approach. These two different types of sensemaking resulted in very different outcomes. A single and widely supported strategic issue was identified in one bank. In the other bank, the identification of several conflicting issues made a variety of tacit tensions apparent and available for potential resolution. The paper thus highlights how the design and the management of sensemaking occasions can produce rather distinct outcomes which may be more or less suited to the original managerial intentions.
