Assessing young children´s learning and behavior in the classroom:A complexity approach

    No full text
This chapter provides a complex dynamic systems view on curriculum-based learning in early education. We first discuss the general notions of curriculum, assessment, skills, and learning in early education and give a short overview of curriculum-based assessment in early childhood education (ECE) in the Netherlands. We conclude that for assessment to be usable in an educational context, an understanding of the process of learning is crucial. We then present the theory of complex dynamic systems as a general framework for defining learning, skills, and assessment. A complex dynamic system is defined as any network of interacting components (e.g., cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components in an agent, such as a learning child, and components of the teaching process in a teacher). As a consequence of their interactions in a network of dynamic connections, complex dynamic systems undergo typical change in the form of self-organization, variability, temporal stability, and so forth. These patterns of change characterize the processes of learning and associated teaching in young children and educators. In spite of the abstract nature of this theoretical framework, we show that its basic concepts are intuitively appealing in educational contexts and provide concrete and usable ways for assessment in early childhood education. To this end, we present a taxonomy of assessment forms based on complexity thinking and provide two practical, complexity-based examples of the assessment of learning processes in early childhood education: a web-based program for assessing students’ learning and behavioral goals and a video feedback coaching program for teachers giving science lessons for young children. We conclude with practical recommendations for early childhood curricula and for early childhood assessment

WHISTLEBLOWING INTENTION SEBAGAI ALAT ANTIKORUPSI DALAM INSTITUSI KEPOLISIAN

    Get PDF

The realism of Piero della Francesca

    No full text
The fifteenth-century Italian artist Piero della Francesca painted a familiar world. Roads wind through hilly landscapes, run past farms, sheds, barns, and villages. This is the world in which Piero lived. At the same time, Piero’s paintings depict a world that is distant. The subjects of his pictures are often Christian and that means that their setting is the Holy Land, a place Piero had never visited. The Realism of Piero della Francesca studies this paradoxical aspect of Piero’s art. It tells the story of an artist who could think of the local churches, palaces, and landscapes in and around his home town of Sansepolcro as miraculously built replicas of the monuments of Jerusalem. Piero’s application of perspective, to which he devoted a long treatise, was meant to convince his contemporaries that his paintings report on things that Piero actually observed. Piero’s methodical way of painting seems to have offered no room for his own fantasy. His art looks deliberately styleless. This book uncovers a world in which painting needed to validate itself by cultivating the illusion that it reported on things observed instead of things imagined by the artist. Piero’s painting claimed truth in a world of increasing uncertainties.</p

Bladder-emptying methods, neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction and impact on quality of life in people with long-term spinal cord injury

Objectives: To describe bladder-emptying methods used by people with long-term spinal cord injury (SCI) and to determine usage differences in relation to time since injury, sex, lesion level and completeness of lesion. Furthermore, to evaluate the relationship between bladder-emptying methods and the impact of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) on quality of life (QoL).Design: Cross-sectional multicenter study.Setting: Dutch community.Participants: Persons dependent on wheelchairs (N = 282) with traumatic or non-traumatic SCI for = 10 years and age at injury of 18-35 years.Interventions: Not applicable.Outcome measures: The International Lower Urinary Tract Function Basic SCI Data Set and the Short-Form Qualiveen (SF-Qualiveen).Results: Median time since injury was 22.0 years (IQR: 16.8-30.3). Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) was most commonly used (42.6%). Longer time since injury was associated with fewer continent urinary diversions and more transurethral catheter use. Transurethral catheter use and continent urinary diversions were more prevalent among women. Participants with tetraplegia were more likely to use reflex voiding or a suprapubic catheter, and participants with paraplegia were more likely to use CIC. Transurethral catheter users reported the highest impact of NLUTD on quality of life (SF-Qualiveen score: 1.9; SD= 0.8). Participants with a continent urinary diversion reported the lowest impact (SF-Qualiveen score: 0.9; SD = 0.6). Higher age and indwelling catheter use versus CIC were associated with a higher impact of NLUTD on QoL.Conclusions: CIC is the most common bladder-emptying method in Dutch people with long-term SCI. Clinicians should be aware of the impact of NLUTD on QoL, especially for those using an indwelling catheter.</p

The opportunity cost of negative screening in socially responsible investing

This paper investigates the impact of negative screening on the investment universe as well as on financial performance. We come up with a novel identification process and as such depart from mainstream Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) literature by concentrating on individual firms’ conduct and studying a much wider range of issues. Firstly, we study the size and financial performance of fourteen potentially controversial issues: abortion, adult entertainment, alcohol, animal testing, contraceptives, controversial weapons, fur, gambling, genetic engineering, meat, nuclear power, pork, (embryonic) stem cells, and tobacco. We investigate an international sample of more than 1,600 stocks for more than twenty years. We then analyze the impact of applying negative screens to a market portfolio. Our findings suggest that the choice for negative screening strategies does matter for the size of the investment universe as well as for risk-adjusted return performance. Investing in controversial stocks in many cases results in additional risk-adjusted returns, whereas excluding them may reduce financial performance. These findings suggest that there are opportunity costs to negative screening

Signaling in a Rent-Seeking Contest with One-Sided Asymmetric Information

    No full text
We consider a two-player rent-seeking Tullock contest where one player has private information about his valuation of the prize, which can be high or low. This player can send a costly signal to his opponent, i.e., he can commit to reduce the prize either by some absolute amount of money or proportionally, conditional on winning it. We show that both kinds of signaling imply completely opposite results for separating equilibria, both in terms of conditions for existence and the type of player who sends the costly signal.</p
