Virtue, Vice, and Situationism
On the basis of psychological research, a group of philosophers known as 'situationists' argue that the evidence belies the existence of broad and stable (or 'global') character traits. They argue that this condemns as psychologically unrealistic those traditions in moral theory in which global virtues are upheld as ideals. After a survey of the debate to date, this article argues that the thesis of situationism is ill-supported by the available evidence. Situationists overlook the explanatory potential of a large class of global character traits, namely, vices that do not involve other-directed malevolence, such as laziness, cowardice, and selfishness. A detailed discussion of the relevant empirical studies bearing on moral psychology shows that the behavioral patterns observed in these studies are consistent with the widespread possession of such non-malicious vices. This means, contrary to the situationist thesis, that the empirical record is fully compatible with the common existence of global character traits
When sanctions convey moral norms
Sanctions not only have the instrumental function of deterring people from undesired behavior but they also have the ability to convey moral norms. As such, they may create a moral motivation not to engage in the sanctioned behavior. This is desirable as this makes the success of a sanctioning system depend less on quality of enforcement. However, sanctions may not always succeed in conveying moral norms. In this paper, three conditions are highlighted that, in the psychology literature, have been empirically proven to influence whether a sanction succeeds to evoke moral norms. First, a sanction should not be regarded as a way to make up for the negative consequences of a transgression a sanction. So, they should be communicated in a retributive way rather than in a compensatory way. Second, as punishments communicate an obligatory rule and rewards communicate a voluntary rule, punishments are a better way to incur moral norms than rewards. Third, severe sanctions more strongly convey a moral norm than mild ones as long as these severe sanctions are not unreasonably severe, are installed by trustworthy authorities and in a fair way. The value of the moral expressive function of sanctions, as well as its drawbacks, are discussed.</p
Homer and the Good Ruler in Antiquity and Beyond
Homer and the Good Ruler in Antiquity and Beyond focuses on the important question of how and why later authors employ Homeric poetry to reflect on various types and aspects of leadership. In a range of essays discussing generically diverse receptions of the epics of Homer in historically diverse contexts, this question is answered in various ways. Rather than considering Homer’s works as literary products, then, this volume discusses the pedagogic dimension of the Iliad and the Odyssey as perceived by later thinkers and writers interested in the parameters of good rule, such as Plato, Philodemus, Polybius, Vergil, and Eustathios
The Acts of Andrew
This essay explores the representation of Euclia, a female slave whose story is found within the narrative of Acts of Andrew. I read this early Christian text alongside Page duBois' Torture and Truth and Slaves and Other Objects and, through a focus on Euclia's story, analyze the relationship among slavery, gender, torture, and truth as represented in this text. In order to explore these issues, I compare the representations of the bodies of Euclia, the slave, with Maximilla, the free elite woman. In doing so I argue that Maximilla's body is undeniably "untouchable" while Euclia's body is vulnerable to sexual abuse and torture. Additionally, I track the "truth" within the narrative as presented by various characters in the text; I argue that both the gender and status of the character shape the view of "truth" found in each characterization. Through this reading I suggest that truth is hidden within the female body of the slave, Euclia. This application of duBois' scholarship to an early Christian narrative illuminates the intricate relationship between slavery and gender as well as torture and truth.</p
The eligibility of emerging market bonds for pension fund portfolios
We study the multi-period asset allocation problem for emerging-market investors whose asset menu consists of stocks, bonds and bills. We consider two types of investors: domestic investors who invest in emerging-market assets only (with returns in local currency) and international investors who invest in both US and emerging-market assets (with returns in US dollars). Our results show that emerging-market bonds with a maturity of one year and longer can provide attractive short-run and long-run investment opportunities to domestic and international investors with different risk preferences
