SUSCEPTIBILITY TO INTERPERSONAL INFLUENCE AMONG YOUNG ADULT MUSLIMS
Consumer susceptibility to interpersonal influence is a general trait that varies across persons and affects a number of consumer behaviour. This study assessed the similarities and differences in terms of consumer susceptibility to interpersonal influence between young adult Muslim living in a Muslim country (i.e. Malaysia) and non-Muslim country (i.e. Britain). To investigate the differences in susceptibility to interpersonal influence between young adult Muslim in Malaysia and Britain, the Consumer Susceptibility to Interpersonal Influence Scale was used. A total of 175 and 217 completed survey questionnaires were collected from Malaysian Muslim and British Muslim sample, respectively. Data collected were analysed using exploratory factor analysis and independent t-test. Findings suggest that irrespective of group, there were two-factor dimensions underlying an individual’s susceptibility to interpersonal influence; namely normative and informational influence. In comparison to British Muslim, Malaysian Muslims were more susceptible to normative influence. This finding may suggest the importance of group approval among Malaysian Muslims’ decision-making. While most Muslim consumers’ lifestyle, dietary and financial rules are determined by the Islamic faith, findings from this study suggest that they are far from homogeneity. This study reveals that Muslim consumer from Malaysia and Britain demonstrate differences in terms of their susceptibility to interpersonal influence which consequently will affect marketing practitioners around the world on how to serve their relatively young Muslim consumers from different countries.

RECONCEPTUALIZING THE 21ST CENTURY ENGLISH PEDAGOGIES FOR ISLAMIC SCHOOL TEACHERS IN ASEAN
Since more people have become competent in English, the number of non-native English speakers continues to increase. The larger the number, the more diverse English-speaking individuals are. Consequently, there has been an emerged demand for new English pedagogies to adequately address the diversity of English-communicative encounters. The aims of English language learning in the 21st century have shifted from English interactions with native speakers to any English encounters that may involve native or non-native speakers. In response to the call of ELT transformation for the 21st century global challenges on diverse English environments, this study seeks to analyze and synthesize the ELT pedagogic countermeasures employed by the nine English teachers in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. The participants were purposively selected. The data predominantly collected from different participant groups by utilizing a semi-structured interview and focus group discussion. The derived qualitative data were then processed with content analysis. The findings revealed 6 ELT approaches that are effective for language acquisition of English classrooms in Islamic schools: (1) reconsidering new roles and functions of teachers; (2) emphasizing active learning and encouraging collaboration; (3) implementing technology; (4) employing local learning materials; (5) integrating learning to other study areas; and (6) reevaluating learners’ learning. Based on the findings, education practitioners can adapt their English teaching practices, whereas policy makers and curriculum designers can reconsider to reconceptualize national policies and curriculums in English education for Thai and other ASEAN learners to enhance their English proficiency for a higher quality global member of the 21st century. BOARD DIVERSITY, INDUSTRY SPECIFICITY, AND FIRM PERFORMANCE
Industry specificity is important to affect board diversity-performance relationship. Prior studies are flawed by assuming that Malaysian industries are homogenous, and industry peculiarities might not be captured by the aggregate results of all firms in the country. The ability of board diversity to boost firms’ performance could be affected by a specific nature of the industries. The purpose of this study is to examine the combined effect of board diversity on firm performance. We also examined the moderating role of industry specificity on the board diversity-performance relationship. Data were collected from 180 listed firms in Malaysia for the period of 2012 to 2016 to avoid the implication of the Companies Act 1965 revamp in late 2016 and the latest MCCG reform in 2017. Data were analysed using the random effect panel data regression to test the research hypotheses. The findings suggest that firm performance is influenced by the combined effects of board diversity dimensions. The findings confirmed the importance of industry effect indicated by the variations of board diversity-performance relationship across industries. Other significant factors include firm’s growth, size, and leverage. Thus, different industries in Malaysia should utilize a distinguished corporate governance framework to improve firm performance according to their industry specificities. The findings of this study contribute to the body of knowledge by expanding the role of board diversity in the context of industry specificity.

NATION-BUILDING AMONG YOUTHS IN MALAYSIA: THE CIVIC EDUCATION APPROACH
This article focuses on the nation-building among youths in Malaysia through civic education. Today's youths are exposed to various social challenges, including domestic and global intimidations, and they are easily involved in social problems and immoral activities. Moreover, some of the youths are seen as close-minded, lack respect for the elders and intolerant in their daily life which may affect inter-ethnic relations in a multiethnic society. It is crucial to foster the youths to ensure a better development of the country. The government has implemented civic education approach in educating the youths to foster a strong patriotism and nationalism, and strengthen their loyalty towards the country. The purpose of this study is to provide insights into the implementation of civic education approach cultivating civic consciousness among the Malaysian youth groups. This study employed quantitative approach through a survey technique by using questionnaires distributed to 431 Malaysian youths from Universiti Putra Malaysia (i.e 241 Malay and 190 Chinese students). Descriptive analysis was implemented to compare and contrast the intensity of civic education based on three dimensions, namely civic knowledge, civic skills and civic disposition. The findings show that the Malay and Chinese respondents have high levels of civic education and high civic consciousness as to understand the importance of living in a multiethnic society. The positive integration among the Malays and Chinese will strengthen a sense of belonging among the Malaysian youths. This study concludes that civic education in this country is important as the foundation for unity and the construction of a dreamed nation-state.

DO FATWAS HAMPER MUSLIM WOMEN’S SOCIO-ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION IN MALAYSIA?
A number of studies show that, in Malaysia, women continue to make significant contributions to the country’s economic and social development. Moreover, women’s access to health and education has increased rapidly over the years. However, some studies claim that socio-economic discrimination against Muslim women persists. Although several factors contribute to this discrimination, fatwas (a legal opinion of Muslim jurists on Muslim affairs) are accused of discriminating against Muslim women in Malaysia such as prohibiting the appointment of female judges in shariah courts, employment of women for night shifts i.e. in the electronic factories, police force, and hospitals. Women’s socio-economic participation is important as it empowers them and creates gender equality. This paper reviews 16 fatwas on five topics relevant to women’s socio-economic participation in Malaysia issued by 11 state muftis (who issue fatwa) during the period of 1970 to 2012 in order to realize whether they hamper their participation. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, this paper concludes that fatwas had neither affected their socio-economic participation nor shaped their life negatively. This paper is hoped to positively shape the society’s impression of fatwas and help Muslim women in Malaysia abide to Islamic teachings by realizing the good impacts of fatwas issued. REFRAMING STUDENTS’ NEGATIVE CONCEPTIONS OF FAILURE: AN ACTION RESEARCH
The fear of academic failure can compound other challenges that students are already facing in their lives, and this can take a toll on their mental and emotional states, their relationships with others, and their learning capacities. This article presents findings of an action research that was carried out with 35 postgraduate students from two classes, with aims to reframe their conception of fear of failure as valuable lesson opportunities, by means of getting them to participate in experiential and purposeful activities in a safe learning space. It aims to see if these students would have become less fearful of failures by Week 15. In addition to sharing personal anecdotes of failure, students were given challenging class work, reminded of failure-success catch-phrases, given honest and critical (but compassionate) feedback of their performance. The collected data include students’ fear of failure index scores, pre (Week 1) and post (Week 15) intervention course feedback of their fear of failure. The analysis shows that the methods seem to have a positive effect in mitigating fears of failure, however, the research also shows some caveats and variables that can inhibit the facilitation and the effectiveness of the pedagogical methods. It is hoped this research can also aid other educators in improving and innovating their pedagogy practices, in order to help students reframe their conceptions of failure.

FEMALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THEIR RIGHTS TO COMPENSATION IN MALAYSIA
In Malaysia, victims of domestic violence including women may seek protection under the Domestic Violence Act 1994 (Act 521) (hereinafter “DVA 1994”). Pursuant to section 10 of the DVA 1994, female victims of domestic violence (hereinafter “FVDV”) have the right to claim compensation from their husbands or former husbands (hereinafter “Abusive Husbands”). The criminal court also has jurisdiction to make a compensation order as stated under section 426 (1A) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593) (hereinafter “CPC”). A qualitative approach was used for this research, consisting of a detailed analysis of the DVA 1994, CPC, Penal Code (Act 574), case laws, journals, newspapers and scholarly writings related to this area. Based on the findings, there are shortcomings within both provisions which may affect the FVDV’s claim for compensation. Thus, it is timely to propose amendments and reforms to enhance their rights. These include the insertion of a provision stressing that the claim for compensation under section 10 of the DVA 1994 can be applied through a stand-alone application, the inclusion of a provision allowing the compensation order to be initiated by the court on its own motion or upon the application by the FVDV themselves, imposing a responsibility on the court to give reasons if the court decides to disallow the application for compensation made, explaining the legal consequence to the offender should the offender fail to comply with the compensation order, and alternatively to consider a state-funded compensation scheme to provide immediate financial assistance to FVDV without going through the court process. ABSTRACT
This study aims to identify symptoms of depression among female drug users that are treated at a Cure and Care Drug Rehabilitation Centre. The identification of depression symptoms among female drug user is crucial to prevent ‘dual diagnosis’ problem that can cause female drug users to be at risk of having relapse behavior, impulsive addiction behavior and transmission of infectious diseases especially blood related disease. This pilot study used quantitative method and data were collected via survey involving a set of close-ended questionnaire. M.I.N.I Neuropsychiatry Instrument was used to identify depression symptoms, while Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) instrument was used to determine types of specific substance abused among the female drug users. 31 of 180 female drug users were randomly selected using simple random sampling technique and data were descriptively analyzed. The findings indicated that 12 out of 31 respondents reported having depression symptom as outlined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) such as prolonged sadness, moody or melancholy continuously for at least two weeks and had caused loss of interest in enjoying things they preferred to in the past and distributed their daily social activities. However, the remaining respondents did not report any depression symptom and it could be due to the current treatment and recovery process they undergo. Methamphetamine drug abused such as syabu and ecstasy had negative effects to users’ mental health. Serious attention should be given to the female drug users who are suffering from dual diagnosis. The findings are crucial for the relevant and responsible authorities to providing clinical mental health screening for the addicts especially the female drug addicts. An integrated mental health treatment among the female drug users with ‘dual diagnosis’ is recommended in the treatment and rehabilitation program.

TEACHER TRAINEES’ JOURNEY TO DEVELOP LEARNER AUTONOMY
This study concerns the degree of autonomy in English Language Learning (ELL) amongst the ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher trainees in Sarawak. This is part of a larger study which aims to investigate the relationship between ESL teacher trainees’ self-rating in ELL and their degree of autonomy based on their perceived ELL. The Pedagogy-Andragogy-Heutagogy Continuum Framework is used to guide the study. Data were collected from questionnaire distributed to 259 ESL trainee teachers from four IPG (Teacher Training Institute) campuses in Sarawak. The data were analysed through descriptive analysis and correlation tests using SPSS version 22. The results revealed that the degree of autonomy of the ESL teacher trainees in ELL is high with significant but weak relationship between their self-rating with ELL and their degree of autonomy. This study adds to the limited data on the learner autonomy of ESL teacher trainees which should be addressed in the Malaysian Education Blueprint. We recommend that future education policy gives more attention in developing teacher trainees’ learner autonomy in order to ensure the alignment between second language teacher training and the development of 21st century learner skills as stated in the Malaysian Education Blueprint.
