PURSUING HIGHER EDUCATION CAREERS AND THE PROCESS OF MIGRATION AMONG INDONESIAN FEMALE MIGRANT WORKERS IN TAIWAN

    Get PDF
Remittance, labor migration and the significance of the female role in the process of labor migration have recently become entrenched in many developing countries, such as Indonesia. The influential role these female migrant workers play in supporting their own families and in their self-fulfillment is of significance and worthy of being fully expounded and discussed. As breadwinners, these female migrant workers strive to pursue higher education by working their way through college. Qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to obtain five Indonesian female migrant workers' opinion and experiences about their experience of being a worker and a student in Taiwan. The data in this study were analyzed and evaluated with thematic analysis. This study describes the factors which cause the Indonesian female workers to become migrant workers in Taiwan. This includes getting high-paid jobs, shouldering the responsibility for supporting their own families, and pursuing self-fulfillment overseas. Besides, this study has investigated the difficulties and challenges that female Indonesian migrant workers had encountered while working and studying at the same time. On the whole, as caregivers, most of them often fail to have a flexible schedule to study due to the temporary jobs assigned by their employers. Also, some employers are unwilling to allow them to pursue higher education for feat that they would not concentrate on their own work. Above all, it is these female migrant workers that can define what their lives truly mean as migrant workers on their own, and that can align their talents and ambitions with their pursuits of higher education. This study provides a new exploration of how the female migrant workers’ gained a sense of self-fulfillment by pursuing higher education with working and studying at the same time. Facing a variety of challenges and hindrances, their persistence and perseverance can be further examined for those who are interested in studying this field deeper.   Keywords: Female migrant workers, higher education, Indonesian migrant workers, labor migration, remittance   Cite as: Bali, S., Liu, M. This study compares the performance of Shariah and conventional mutual funds in emerging markets. The performance of 833 Shariah and conventional funds in 6 emerging markets from 2000 to 2015 was analyzed. We analyzed the Sharpe index, Treynor index, and Jensen’s alpha to compare the performance of Shariah and conventional funds. Jensen's alpha results conform to those of Sharpe’s in indicating that Shariah funds slightly outperform their conventional counterparts particularly in the case of Malaysia, Pakistan, and South Africa. Conventional funds perform exceptionally well in Egypt. Further investigation using the Henriksson–Merton model shows that fund managers’ performance relies nearly completely on their stock selection skills because they have either inferior or ineffective ability in timing the market. This study is the first cross-country attempt to compare the performance of Shariah and conventional funds in emerging markets in terms of risk-adjusted returns, security selectivity, and market timing capability.   Keywords: Emerging markets, Jensen’s alpha, mutual funds, risk-adjusted performances, Shariah mutual funds   Cite as:   Abdul-Rahim, R. Present literature related to human resource development highlights that training management is a strategic human resource management policy. This issue has been viewed as a remarkable phenomenon in dynamic organizations. Recent studies mostly published in the 21st century  proved that the ability of management to plan and implement training programs may produce a noteworthy effect on work related attitudes, particularly in training transfer. This study incorporates a cross-sectional design as it delivers flexibility to the researchers in incorporating the training management literature, a self-administered questionnaires and semi-structured interview to gather data from participants at a military medical corps using a purposive sampling method. They are the administrators, medical doctors, nurses and supporting staff who work in different divisions within the organization. The SmartPLS path model analysis was utilized to analyze the validity and reliability of the instrument, and thus testing the research hypotheses. The results of SmartPLS path model analysis revealed that the implementation of communication and assignment in managing training programs had led to higher employees’ motivation to transfer, while  implementation of support in managing training programs had not led to higher employees’ motivation to transfer in the organizational sample. Therefore, this study further suggests that communication and assignment should be considered as a critical success factor for the training management domain, as well as external and internal obstacles should be comprehensively evaluated to maintain and achieve the training goals in an era of knowledge-based organization.  Keywords: Assignment, communication, support, training management, training transfer. Cite as: Ismail, A., Foboy, N. Get PDF
Previous studies show that a superior tourist experience would lead to travel satisfaction and develop loyalty towards a destination. However, the role and influence of experience quality on tourist behavioural intentions have yet to be thoroughly scrutinized. This study aims at examining the experience quality of Pangkor Island tourists and its effect on their satisfaction and destination loyalty. This research applied the convenience sampling method whereby the survey data were collected conveniently from the tourists visiting Pangkor Island. The data obtained were examined via Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The structural model assessment proposed that the natural attraction of Pangkor Island, the local behaviour, destination value, safety and cleanliness influence the tourists' satisfaction and destination loyalty. This study contributes to a better understanding of how the quality of tourist experience affect their behavioural mechanisms: travel satisfaction and destination loyalty. The research findings contribute to the literature on island tourism and enrich the existing knowledge of experience quality components and their effect on tourists’ satisfaction and destination loyalty. Keywords: Destination loyalty, experience quality, Pangkor Island, satisfaction, Tourist. Cite as: Hanafiah, M. This study examines an English language teacher’s beliefs and practices within the context of implementation of school-based curriculum in Eastern Indonesia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher belief and practice in the school-based curriculum through two research questions: “What are the teacher’s beliefs about teaching English in a school-based curriculum setting?” and “How does the school-based curriculum influence the teacher’s beliefs and practices?”. This case study adopts purposeful sampling involving a volunteered public junior high school English language teacher. It derives its qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, observation field notes and lesson plans. It identifies two themes of this teacher’s belief: “pragmatic views of teaching” and “conformity to practice”. When the beliefs were examined in relation to the practices, another two themes emerged, and they were “negotiation between expectations and practices” and “tension between conformity and practice”. The findings of this study indicate that negotiation was a constant practice while teaching within the context of the school-based curriculum. Although the teacher demonstrated autonomy in classroom management and teaching strategies, the freedom was not extended to the selection of teaching materials and activities. The identified tensions between conformity and practice highlight issues in teacher readiness and teacher support on the implementation of school-based curriculum. Keywords: Classroom practice, English language teacher, Indonesia, school-based curriculum, teacher belief. Cite as: Too, W. PENENTU PEMILIKAN TAKAFUL MIKRO DALAM KALANGAN KUMPULAN BERPENDAPATAN RENDAH: [THE DETERMINANT OF MICROTAKAFUL OWNERSHIP AMONG LOW INCOME EARNERS]

    Get PDF
Kata Kunci: B40, logistik, pemilikan, perkhidmatan, takaful   ABSTRACT Takaful policy based on the concept of micro takaful has been long introduced in Malaysia. The rational behind the development of micro takaful concept is to ensure each level of society in Malaysia would be able to have takaful protection, especially the low-income group such as B40. However, the ownership of family takaful or insurance protection plan among B40 remain low, at 4%. Therefore, this study attempts to examine the determinants of micro takaful ownership among low-income groups, known as B40. The sample of this study is 150 respondents, which is chosen based on purposive nonprobability sampling method. The logistic regression results show positive effect of company services towards micro takaful ownership among the B40. However, other factors such as financial capability, knowledge level, accessibility, and environmental factor do not influence the ownership of micro takaful. The results offer inputs for takaful operators in particular, and insurance and takaful industry, in general, to streamline and enhance service quality to promote the purchase of micro takaful among the B40. The efforts and cooperation from the takaful operators to encourage the B40 households to purchase micro takaful are essential to make B40 households more resilient against the economic shocks, and subsequently, improve their living standards towards middle-class society.   Keywords: B40, logistic, ownership, services, takaful   Cite as: Hafizuddin-Syah, B. PENYEBARAN PENGARUH DIALEK MELAYU THAI DI MALAYSIA: ANALISIS GIS: [THE DISTRIBUTION OF THAI MALAY DIALECTS IN MALAYSIA: A GIS ANALYSIS]

    Get PDF
Kata kunci: Dialek Melayu, dialek Melayu Thai, Geographic Information System (GIS), isoglos, varian fonologi   ABSTRACT Traditional dialect studies in Malaysia have widely been explored. These studies managed to group all the phonological variants which produce various Malay dialects in Malaysia. Then there were progresses in terms of producing isoglosses which were drew impressionistically on the maps in the studies of geographical dialects. However, there were gaps in the dialect studies for some time before the dialect studies with Geographic Information System (GIS) application was introduced. This technology-based study has the ability to produce isogloss maps using the overlay technique and choropleth marking for the sound variants precisely. This article aims to explain the influence for the dissemination of Thai Malay dialects by applying GIS. This study involves the states of Perlis, Kedah Langkawi, Penang and Perak. This multidisciplinary study explains how non-linguistics factors such as geography, migration and history as well as linguistics factors shape the distribution of the Malay dialects in the northern Peninsular Malaysia in particular. More than a thousand respondents were involved who were divided into three age categories namely, the elderly (50 and older), adults (26-49 years) and adolescents (15-25 years). Respondents were interviewed and required to answer questionnaires. Forty (40) word lists related to respondents' lives were selected. The result shows that there is a widespread of Thai Malay dialects in Malaysia. Interestingly, the dialects are not only the Patani dialect but also the Satun dialect especially in Langkawi and Perlis. GIS application has not only been able to accurately reproduce isoglosses but have proven that non-linguistic factors are additional factors that explained the reasons for dialects to disseminate in an area.   Keywords: Geographic Information System (GIS), isoglosses, Malay dialects, phonological variants, Thai Malay dialects   Cite as: Jalaluddin, N. MOVING ONWARD: TRANSNATIONALISM AND FACTORS INFLUENCING ROHINGYAS’ MIGRATION FROM BANGLADESH TO MALAYSIA

Continuous human rights persecutions have forced nearly one million Rohingyas to flee from Myanmar and seek refuge in Bangladesh. While their forced migration to the first asylum country of Bangladesh is inevitable, some have been compelled to move onward to other transit countries. Existing studies indicate various factors influencing cross-border activities among different segments of immigrants. They also suggest that the degree of transnationalism affects different kind of people on the move, subsequently brings about unique consequences to receiving community. In this study, we aim to determine factors contributing to the onward movement of Rohingyas from their refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh to Malaysia. We utilize the broader concept of transnationalism in order to gauge the Rohingyas’ perception and the realities they face in relation to their onward movement from Bangladesh to Malaysia. This study employed three methods of data collection namely a survey, an in-depth interview and a focus group discussion in engaging the Rohingyas in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Resulting from a two-part of data collection conducted in 2013 and 2016, we found that the onward movement of Rohingyas was mostly driven by poverty, unconducive livelihood experiences, limited access to humanitarian aid, and inadequate refugee protection in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, positive Rohingyas’ perception toward Malaysia, coupled with the availability of job opportunities have attracted them to choose Malaysia as the next asylum country. While this study enriches the existing literatures on transnationalism and onward movement of refugees, it also provides empirical evidences for humanitarian assistances in Bangladesh and Malaysia. Keywords: Forced migration, onward movement, refugees, Rohingya, transnationalism. Cite as: Ab. LINGUISTIC VARIATION AMONG SOUTH ASIAN ENGLISHES: A CORPUS-BASED MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
Pakistani English is considered to be a distinct variety of English on the basis of its comparison with British English and American English. However, this claim is partial as its distinction from other varieties of English particularly used in South Asia has not yet been established. Thus, there is a need to investigate the similarities and differences between Pakistani and South Asian Englishes, and to analyse how far Pakistani English is distinct from other South Asian Englishes. Therefore, the present study aims at analyzing the linguistic features of Pakistani English as a separate variety from other varieties of English used in India and Bangladesh. For this purpose, a corpus of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi English newspaper reportage was developed and analyzed using Biber’s (1988) multivariate/ multidimensional approach. The findings indicated that Pakistani press reportage is different from Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage on all the five dimensions, especially on Dimension 2, in which Pakistani press reportage is narrative, while Bangladeshi press reportage is non-narrative in nature. On Dimension 3, the press reportage of Pakistan is highly explicit as compared to Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage. Further, the sub-categories of Pakistani press reportage also exhibit variation when compared to the sub-categories of Indian and Bangladeshi press reportage. The possible causes of linguistic variation among these countries are their culture and geographical origin. It is further suggested that South Asian Englishes are evolving rapidly and linguistic variation among them certainly be a worth researchable area. Keywords: Multidimensional analysis, Pakistani English, press reportage, South Asian Englishes, world Englishes. Cite as: Ali, S. & Shehzad, W. A COGNITIVE-SEMANTIC APPROACH TO THE INTERPRETATION OF DEATH METAPHOR THEMES IN THE QURAN

    Get PDF
In previous literature, conceptual metaphor has been used as a comprehensive cognitive tool to explore systematic categorization of concepts in the Quran. Death metaphor themes have either been studied from rhetorical or conceptual perspectives, but metaphor interpretation needs both linguistic and conceptual knowledge. This paper will explore the function of both linguistic and conceptual knowledge in metaphor interpretation in the Quran. This paper has used the technique of key words and phrases for data collection and metaphor identification procedure (MIP) for metaphors identification. Thirteen conceptual metaphors were found in the data. The key conceptual metaphors were analyzed through the lexical concept cognitive model theory (hereafter LCCM) to find out the functions of linguistic and conceptual knowledge in metaphor interpretation. The findings reveal that conceptual metaphor gives only relational structure to the linguistic metaphoric expressions, whereas interpretation needs integration of both linguistic and conceptual knowledge. Conceptual simulation of metaphoric expressions is a multilinear process of multiple conceptual schemas and language. The findings also reveal that LCCM needs the tool of intertextuality for clash resolution of contexts in text interpretation. This paper holds that meaning construction depends upon multilinear processing of conceptual schemas and language. Furthermore, it asserts that the gap in LCCM may be resolved through the tool of intertextuality in metaphor comprehension. This study suggests further studies on relationship between conceptual schemas and lexical behaviour and an elaborate model for text interpretation, combining LCCM and intertextuality.   Keywords: Cognitive model, cognitive semantics, conceptual metaphor, fusion, lexical concept   Cite as: Sardaraz, K., & Ali, R.
