ABSTRACTThis study describes the phonological behaviour of word-final consonants in the Petani Sik dialect spoken in the Sik region of Kedah, Malaysia. There are a number of phonological phenomena which occur at word-final position in the Petani Sik dialect due to restriction on the presence of consonants at this position of word. Data for this study were obtained through pilot study, questionnaire and fieldwork which included observation and recording. Data gathering at Kampung Telaga Batu, Sik, Kedah was carried out involving 30 native speakers aged between 45 and 75 years. The findings show that consonants /r/, /l/, /s/, /m/ and /h/ are not allowed to occur at word-final position in the Petani Sik dialect. The occurrence of these consonants has been resolved by the phonological processes namely coalescence, substitution, epenthesis and deletion. The substitution consonant from /s/ to [ç] which is preceded by a high vowel and from /s/ to [h] before /a/ which is then followed by the epenthesis [j] before the consonant are the most interesting outputs yielded from the dialect particularly the [ç]sound. Its presence in Malay dialects is limited only for the North Kedah dialect. It also does not exist in the standard Malay. The limited presence of this sound is interesting as it represents a unique identity symbol for Kedah dialect particularly Petani Sik dialect. This study contributes to the phonological knowledge in the dialect and it documents the grammar of a Malay dialect which now has less speakers. Keywords: Kedah dialect, Malay language, Petani Sik dialect, phonology, word-final position.Cite as: Salam, N. Organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) is important in the organisational behavioural research. OCB contributes significantly to the success of an organisation through proactive behaviour in extra-role activity and active involvement in organisation operation to ensure efficiency and productivity in service delivery. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between work-family conflict as the antecedent of OCB and the role of self-efficacy as the mediating variable. Data were collected from 510 public administrators at Public Service Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Data analyses were conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the research model hypotheses related to the relationship between work-family conflict, self-efficacy and OCB. The findings confirmed that there is a significant negative relationship between work-family conflict and self-efficacy and there is no relationship between work-family conflict and OCB. Self-efficacy is proven to be a fully mediation variable in the relationship between work-family conflict and OCB. The results suggest that organisations should be aware of individual characteristics and work-family domain to foster participation and engagement in OCB. The findings of this study contribute to the literature especially on OCB and open new avenues for future research by providing new perspective on factors that influence individual behaviour and also the role of personal efficacy on those relationship. Keywords: Mediation analysis, Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB), self-efficacy, SmartPLS, work-family conflict. ABSTRACTThis article focuses on the development of the skipper who led the deep-sea vessel. Changes occurred to the deep-sea skipper, in which some of them possess entrepreneurial characteristics and act as an entrepreneur. Some of them turn out to be fishery entrepreneurs. The study was conducted in the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) which involved four states in Malaysia, namely, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and East Johor. A total of 17 informants were interviewed, five in Kelantan, three in Terengganu, six in Pahang and three in Endau-Mersing, in which, they were selected through purposive sampling and snowball sampling. The interviews were transcribed into verbatim and analyzed using thematic approach. The findings confirm that the deep-sea skippers are no longer a skipper but they have transformed to become a fishery entrepreneur. Their transformation from deep-sea skipper to entrepreneurs or known as skipper-entrepreneur is a significant development in the fishery industry. They possess entrepreneurial characteristics of human capital, social capital and economic capital, in which, all of these capitals are important for an entrepreneur in managing and organizing fishery organizations. It involves seizing opportunities, risks-taking, high production processes, high capital and social networking. The evolution form solely a skipper to take part in organization and market makes them a multi-function entrepreneur. The development of the skipper-entrepreneur can further increase the national fish production, thus contribute to ensuring national food security. Two important features in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) education are integration and solving real world problems.  Despite the efforts to promote STEM education awareness and interest among students and teachers, documented studies on how to explicitly integrate the existing STEM subjects curriculum standards in solving real world problems are limited. This paper describes the planning of after-school STEM education program focusing on relevant global issues related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that integrates the existing curriculum standards of three STEM subject in the lower secondary level. The data collection is mainly through document analysis of the three individual STEM subjects’ standard documents and the planned curriculum map for the school, along with the document on ‘Education for Sustainable Development Goals Learning Objectives’.  Four possible design challenges were formulated based on the themes in SDG incorporating selected standards from the three STEM subjects as well as addition of a few new related concepts and skills.  The description offers a way to assist educators in planning similar STEM education lesson or programmes or activities through integration of the existing individual STEM disciplines curriculum standards for different level and context relevant to the students.   Keywords: Contextual problem solving, integration, standard-based, STEM education, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Cite as: Loh, S. SOLICITATION OF ONLINE SOCIAL SUPPORT: SELF-DISCLOSURE OF EATING DISORDER PATIENTS

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the online construction of self-disclosure of individuals suffering from eating disorders and demonstrates how strategies of soliciting online social support are mediated within the public sphere. McCormack (2010) indicates that participation of individuals suffering from eating disorders in online support groups, where they anonymously share their feelings and issues via the Internet, is more accessible and non-costly compared to offline settings. This serves as motivation for data to be collected from the discussion forums on the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) website. Relevant posts of self-disclosure containing instances of online solicitation of support dated from January 2018 to March 2018 were analysed using the computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) method and North’s (1997) Strategies of Soliciting Social Support. The findings reveal that the sharing of experience is regarded as the most frequent strategy of soliciting support opted by ED patients. This result in a lengthier posts where detailed explanation of their problems were disclosed. It appears that the strategy utilized in online support-solicitation is merely a channel used in portraying the actual state of the support-seekers in handling their illness. In addition, as ED is perceived to be uncommon and unprioritized in Asia (Miller & Pumariega, 2001), the possibility of getting help from various channels may be scarce. Thus, this study’s outcome provides a vivid image on how online social support discussions can be considered as one of the potential effective platforms to help individuals in the Southeast Asia who suffer from ED in their recovery process. Keywords: Computer-mediated discourse, eating disorders, online social support, self-disclosure, soliciting. Cite as: Zulkarnain, N. PEMERHATIAN TERHADAP TERJEMAHAN TEKS SEJARAH ISLAM KE DALAM BAHASA MELAYU: [AN OBSERVATION ON THE TRANSLATED ISLAMIC HISTORICAL TEXTS INTO MALAY]

    Get PDF
Kata kunci: Corak terjemahan, teks agama, teks sejarah Islam, terjemahan Arab-Melayu   ABSTRACT Texts on the history of Islam are priceless treasures as they contain archaeological information on the history of Islamic civilisation. The records in the texts serve as integral resources for Muslims all over the world because good understanding of the history could help develop strong foundation of religious belief. This is because all records on the teachings, explanations, and development of Islam including the occasions or circumstances of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) and circumstances of utterance (asbab al-wurud) are kept in this genre. However, not all Muslims can understand the texts as they do not understand Arabic. Therefore, they need to rely on the translations of historical texts as their source of information. Still, translations of historical texts are hard to find although translations of Islamic texts such as fiqh, usul al-fiqh, tasawuf, aqidah, tafsir, al-Quran and hadith into Malay began as early as the 15th AD in the Malay Archipelago. As such, this study is focused on the existing activities of translating texts on Islamic history. The study also investigates the patterns in the translations carried out. The study involved library research and a close observation on two translated texts which are Sirah Nabawiyyah translated by Omar (2017) and Sirah Rasulullah s.a.w Keagungan Seorang Nabi Bongsu translated by Senawi Ali (2014) and compared with the source text entitled al-Raheeq al-Makhtum by Al-Mubarakpuri (1987). Findings from the study show that there are limitations in the activities of translating Islamic historical texts compared to other genres of Islamic texts. Most of the translated texts on the history of Islam are in the form of adaptations and the translations are more inclined towards the semantic approach. This situation, therefore, produced translation products which tended more towards the source language and culture rather than the target language and culture.    Keywords: Arabic-Malay translation, Islamic historical, religious text, text, translation patterns   Cite as: Wan Omar, W. Entrepreneurship education has been implemented in higher institutions in order to give exposure and develop students’ skills and interest in business. Although entrepreneurship course is taught in many universities, researchers are still arguing whether entrepreneurship education is related to the intention to start a business. This study investigated the impact of self-efficacy, independence, and motivation on entrepreneurial intentions among university students. A total of 496 questionnaires were completed by students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) who attended Fundamental of Entrepreneurship and Innovation during the academic year 2017/2018 as their compulsory subject. Using PLS-SEM, a two-step approach was used to analyze the data. Self-efficacy, independence, and motivation were found to significantly influence the students’ intention to become entrepreneur, explaining 52% of the variance in intention to become entrepreneur. Additionally, the findings indicate that motivation is the key factor in the entrepreneurial intent of the students. These findings contribute to a better understanding of students’ intention to become an entrepreneur, which is a necessary step to increase more university students to become job creators rather than job seekers. Thus, higher education institutions should revise the curriculum and establish measures to incorporate these three factors for enhancing entrepreneurship education programs at the university.   Keywords: Entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial intention, independence, motivation, self-efficacy   Cite as: Omar, N. ENGLISH LANGUAGE RECEPTIVE VOCABULARY PROFILE: A CASE OF NOVICE BUSINESS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

    Get PDF
One of the challenges for undergraduate students is coping with the demand for English language use at universities. Generally, vocabulary knowledge of learners affects how well learners can function in the language, whereby better vocabulary attainment enables more effective use of the language. Thus, it is vital to understand the vocabulary ability of university students to ensure that their overall English language proficiency could be enhanced. This study explores the receptive vocabulary profile of 35 novice business undergraduates at a public university in Malaysia. The profile was explored in terms of size and level. Two tests were administered -- the Vocabulary Size Test (Nation & Beglar, 2007) and Vocabulary Levels Test (Schmitt, Schmitt, & Clapham, 2001). In terms of size, the results indicate the average was 2971 word families (the maximum known was 3800). This is in line with their vocabulary level which reveals 97% of the students did not reach the mastery level of 3000 word family level i.e. have not acquired adequate vocabulary to be able to use the language. The study offers insights into the profile of receptive vocabulary of novice undergraduate students which could be used to enhance vocabulary teaching and learning at universities.   Keywords: Business undergraduates, receptive vocabulary profile, vocabulary level, vocabulary size, word families   Cite as: Lateh, N. Mutakhir ini, banyak isu-isu berkaitan Islam mendominasi kehidupan masyarakat Malaysia. Keywords: Al-Quran, Malaysia, penyalahgunaan, penyelewengan, pusat pengubatan Islam   ABSTRACT Recently, many issues related to Islam have dominated the Malaysian’s societies. Muslim societies, are often faced various polemics and concerns, especially those relating to economic, political, and social issues. One of provocative issues is the concern of religious sensitivity related to the misuse of Quranic verses as a medium in the pursuit of service and product sales. This article aims to study the Quranic verses which have been misused for personal purpose    among medical Islamic practitioners in Malaysia. Through the methods of interview and observation, the study was conducted in the northern and eastern zones of Malaysia to represent a random sampling from the Islamic Medical Center. A total of 36 practitioners and 45 patients from Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang were interviewed and observed for data collecting purposes. This present study found that the misuse of Quranic verses among medical Islamic practitioners in Malaysia occurred in four aspects.  First, Quranic verses are combined with an unintelligible spell which create confusion. Second, the Quranic verses are read in reverse in which the reading begins from the end to the beginning of the verse which is also used as a ruqyah or spell to treat the patient. Third, Quranic verses are used as a charm to resist calamity; and forth, Quranic recitation or parts of its page is used as a material to accompany the supernatural. In fact, the findings prove that some practitioners have misused Quranic verses in their practice of Islamic medicine. Thus by explaining the function of the Quran accurately to the community and monitoring the Islamic medical center by the authorities, it is hoped that the misuse of Quranic verses will not be repeated.   Keywords: Al-Quran, deviation, Islamic medical center, Malaysia, misuse   Cite as: Abd Razzak, M.
