A Therapeutic Alternative in the Management of Fibromyalgia
No full textIntroduction: Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects up to 5% of the population and causes significant deterioration of the quality of life for the sufferer, so it is a therapeutic challenge. The objective of the present study was to describe the experience of the AtlasPROfilax® method in patients with fibromyalgia diagnosed according to the criteria of the American College of Reumatology (ACR) 2010.Methodology: A cross - sectional study with 63 patients with fibromyalgia was done. Patients were monitored two and six months after applying the AtlasPROfilax® method, in order to evaluate the pain level by visual analogue scale VAS and reevaluate ACR criteria in the follow-up appointment.Results: The average age of patients was 48.5 SD 12.6 years, 95.24% were female. 100% of patients improved pain (initial VAS of 8 vs 4 and 3 after two and six months respectively) and these were significant results. A reduction of widespread pain index as well as a reduction in the presence of symptoms such as fatigue, non-restorative sleep and cognitive disorders that are typical of fibromyalgia were also found in 46% of casesConclusion: This study has provided evidence of the effectiveness of the neuromuscular stimulation method of the suboccipital musculature called AtlasPROfilax® in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Randomized and controlled studies are required to demonstrate the medium and long term effectiveness of this therapeutic alternative
Relationship between violence, consumption of alcohol and cigarette in adolescents attending public schools, Suba, Bogotá
No full textObjetivo: Verificar la relación que existe entre el consumo de alcohol y cigarrillo y los comportamientos violentos en adolescentes de colegios públicos de la localidad de Suba, Bogotá.Metodología: Estudio observacional de corte transversal entre 5871 adolescentes escolarizados de 10 a 19 años de edad pertenecientes a colegios públicos ubicados en la localidad de Suba en el año 2010. Se realizó una encuesta en la que se indagó sobre conductas de riesgo en los adolescentes relacionadas con el consumo de alcohol, el cigarrillo y los comportamientos violentos.Resultados: se encontró una prevalencia del consumo de alcohol del 38% y de fumar del 17%. El consumo de alcohol se relacionó con comportamientos violentos (OR de 2,462 con IC 2,206 - 2,754), y el fumar (OR de 3,828 con IC 3,308 - 4,430).Conclusión: El consumo de alcohol y de cigarrillo se asocia como factor de riesgo en los adolescentes de colegios públicos de la localidad de Suba. La relación más fuerte se establece entre el fumar y las conductas violentas.Objective: To verify the relationship between consumption of alcohol and cigarette and, violent behavior in adolescents attending public schools of Suba locality, Bogotá.Methodology: Observational cross-sectional study among 5871 adolescents whose ages ranged from 10 to 19 years attending public schools of Suba locality in 2010. A self-questionnaire was administrated which asked about violent behavior related to drinking alcohol and smoking.Conclusions: Drinking alcohol and smoking is associated with risk factors in adolescents attending public schools in Suba. No full textEl maltrato infantil impide el óptimo desarrollo de los niños y las niñas en diversas áreas, por lo que conocer acerca de esta problemática resulta fundamental para la sociedad y, aún más, para quienes trabajan en el área de salud. Este artículo recoge brevemente parte del contexto colombiano sobre los casos de maltrato infantil; asimismo, presenta una revisión de los tipos de maltrato, sus efectos, indicadores y formas de detección y notificación.Child abuse makes difficult children’s development in several areas, so it is essential that not only the society but even the healthcare providers know about this problem. This article summarizes shortly part of the Colombian context of child abuse. In like manner, it presents a review of child abuse types, also its effects, indicators and, the ways to detect and notify it
