Institutions, institutional quality, and international competitiveness: Review and examination of future research directions
The importance of institutions has become more relevant analytically in recent years, emphasizing the significance of an appropriate institutional framework for international competition. This paper aims to identify the link between institutions, institutional quality, and international competitiveness. Following the TCCM (Theory, Context, Characteristics, and Methodology) framework analysis, proposed by Paul & Rosado-Serrano (2019), we conducted a systematic literature review of top tier journals during the period 2000–2020. This review unfolds the theoretical and empirical studies regarding institutions, institutional quality, and international competitiveness. Main findings reveal five widely studied, three emerging and two understudied theories, the most studied contexts are country and firm, and quantitative studies are the main method of analysis. This review incorporates the acumen of previous research and provides a future research agenda in understudied contexts like industrial and individual level by applying emerging theoretical approaches and integrative analytical methodologies
Methyl acetate, a highly volatile floral semiochemical mediating specialized plant-beetle interactions
Olfactory signaling is key to the reproductive biology of entomophilous palms. Both pollinating and specialized herbivorous insects are attracted to fragrance-emitting palm inflorescences that function as reliable food sources, as well as mating and oviposition sites. In the present study, we characterized the floral scent chemistry of the acuri palm (Attalea phalerata), assessing its role in the attraction of flower-visiting insects associated with this species over its natural distribution range. We sampled insects from staminate inflorescences of A. phalerata (n = 6) at four different sites in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, and Colombian Amazon basin. Dynamic headspace scent samples of both pistillate and staminate inflorescences of A. phalerata (n = 3♀, 3♂) were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Methyl acetate, a rare floral scent compound, was identified as the almost exclusive constituent (\u3e 99.8% relative percentage) in all the samples. Flight-interception traps baited with methyl acetate, installed in one of the sites in the Brazilian Cerrado, were attractive to beetles associated with inflorescences of A. phalerata across all four sampling sites (9 spp. in total), including the putative main pollinators (Mystrops spp., Nitidulidae; Andranthobius spp., Curculionidae) and various palm borers (Paratenthras martinsi, Cerambycidae; Parisoschoenus sp.1 and Belopoeus sp.1; Curculionidae). Methyl acetate is highly volatile and we hypothesize its efficacy relies on profuse emission by the inflorescences of A. phalerata, as specialized pollinating insects respond to high concentrations of the attractant, perhaps before odor plumes rapidly disperse. Such a strategy could prove particularly effective in dense populations of A. phalerata
Inequality and dropout in higher education in colombia. A multilevel analysis of regional differences, institutions, and field of study
In Colombia, the gaps of regional inequalities and social opportunities permeate people’s economic, political, and social participation. Additionally, the initial endowments of individual and socioeconomic background, barriers to financial aid, and academic and personal skills restrict decision-making about studying. In this context, the main objective is to analyze the determinants of dropout rates in Colombia and the differences between the type of institutions, field of study, and regions. We used data from three public administrative agencies for the period 2000–2012. The methodology combines multiple correspondence analysis and a lineal hierarchical model to explain the effect of variables operating at different levels. As a result, we retained four dimensions to represent the individuals’ socioeconomic and financial conditions. The findings obtained from the multilevel model suggest the variation between institutions (11%) and the interaction between institutions and the program cycle (17.8%). It confirms the influence of inequities on desertion. The student chooses between programs with differences in fees and study costs in general, such as quality, social recognition, and employment. In sum, contextual and institutional disparities in the dropout phenomenon’s behavior are explained mainly by the supply conditions in these regions and the individuals’ socioeconomic backgrounds
New method for fast coupled magnetic field-circuit simulation of power transformers based on a semi-analytical approach
A novel mesh-free methodology for the coupled magnetic field-circuit simulation of power transformers is presented in this paper. The proposed methodology employs equivalent models for the conductors and the iron core, which are based on the field produced by elementary geometric configurations and boundary conditions derived from Ampere\u27s and Faraday\u27s laws. Power losses in the windings due to circulating currents are calculated with the proposed method and the Finite Element Method (FEM). A 25 MVA transformer is investigated as a case study and the effect of the conductor connections within the windings is considered through its incidence matrix. The windings losses obtained by applying the proposed methodology are compared with the losses estimated from the short circuit test showing an excellent agreement. The computational performance is also compared with FEM. It has been found that the proposed method is about 9 times faster than FEM retaining the level of precision required for transformer design purposes
Profile of Information Professionals: Between the Traditional and the Emerging
The article sets out the results of the research Characterization of graduates of Archival Science, Library Science, and Information Science in Colombia: 2013-2018 based on the recognition of the professional in the labor field and the correspondence between training and needs of the environment; key elements for the evaluation and decision-making in the curricular processes and the design of policies that strengthen the relationship with the working environment. The results of this research made it possible to identify current needs and challenges to qualify professional training processes, to consolidate the relevance of academic programs, and to strengthen the impact of graduates in the labor field. It is highlighted how the results of previous studies persist or are valid: High employability and low mobility; university libraries and state administrative archives as the main employer; the education and services sectors as the main sources of employment, with a defined term contract employment relationship as the predominant contractual modality and with remuneration of between 2 and 3 current legal monthly minimum wages. These results are in medium tune with current training content, especially from the perspective of fundamental knowledge, and in low tune with emerging areas such as electronic documentation, blockchain, data analytics, open science, big data, and business intelligence. All this is framed in Revolution 4.0 and in the problems that these professionals must face in correspondence with other problems in the field of information and knowledge, such as fake news, the phenomenon of disinformation, and the manipulation of the information on social networks
