    No full text
In this work, four vegetable oils were extracted and saponified. The oils are groundnut, palm, coconut and palm kernel oils. Various methods of extraction were reviewed and suitable ones adopted for extraction of the named oils. Palm oil was used to produce bar soap, palm kernel oil for the production of toilet soap, groundnut oil for the manufacture of medicated soap and coconut oil for the production of liquid bath [fruit bath]. Coconut and palm kernel oil were found to be of higher saponification values. On the other hand, groundnut and palm oil were more suitable for edible products like margarine. Indeed, the extractions, analysis and synthesis recorded in this work satisfy what was needed by every science educator for the re-orientation of the students in the procedures of synthesis, analysis and general experimental works. The science process skills emphasized at various stages of this work would guide and motivate the science teacher towards the use of the laboratory for scientific investigations, experimentations and practical oriented lessons. From this research work, students can acquire the following science process skills observation, measuring, controlling variables. Classifying, inferring, predicting/hypothesizing, manipulating techniques, number relation, and experimenting not only in the laboratory but in their everyday life. Palm oil was used to produce bar soap, palm kernel, kernel oil for production of toilet soap, grand nut oil for manufacture of medicated soap and coconut oil for the manufacture of liquid bath (liquid soap for batting)  &nbsp

Innovative Instructional Approach for Teaching and Learning of Biology and Other Science Subjects

    No full text
Instructional approach is the practice of creating instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing. In a classroom setting, teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Instructional materials must be provided in the classroom model in a way that encourages active learning among the students. However, previous curricular models mainly rely on customary student-centered, teacher-centered learning strategies. Recent scholarship encourages educators to use student-centered learning strategies. The classroom model must present instructional materials in a way that promotes student engagement in active learning. The majority of past curriculum approaches, however, focus on the traditional student-centered, teacher-centered learning techniques. Recent academic work urges teachers to employ student-centered learning techniques. Based on a survey of recent literature, this article explains the self-organized learning environment (SOLE), an active learning technique, as well as the scholarly process used to create an original teaching and learning approach. In the secondary schools in Nigeria, this research suggests possible pedagogical benefits of SOLE in scientific teaching and learning

Adolescent suicide remains a major public health problem, while suicidal ideation is a thought process that may lead to suicide, the parenting style and self-esteem of individuals are necessary phenomena. Hence; this study investigated the influence of parenting style and self-esteem on suicidal ideation among adolescents. 137 students were randomly selected from four secondary schools (Christian intellectual academy, Rising Stars academy, Mbutu Ngwa secondary school, St. Ephraim high school) in Isi Ala Ngwa south local Government Area of Abia State. The participants comprised sixty-one (66) males and seventy-one (71) females. The ages of the participants ranged from 13 - 19 years, with a mean deviation (M) of 16.0 and standard deviation (SD) of 2.01. The selection of participants was carried out through simple random sampling technique whereby everyone was given equal chance of being selected. Three instruments were used for data collection; Positive and negative suicide ideation inventory (PANSI), Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and Perceived parenting styles scales (PPSS). Two hypotheses wereformulated and tested. Cross-sectionalsurvey design was employed for collectingdata.Hierarchical multiple regression was thestatistics used to analyze the data. The resultsobtained showed that among the dimensionsof parenting styles, only authoritarianparenting style (β = -.17, t = -1.97, p< .05)significantly influenced suicidal ideationamong adolescents, while Authoritative (β =.02, t = .22, p> .05) and permissive (β = -.09,t = -1.05, p> .05) parenting styles did notsignificantly predict suicidal ideation amongadolescents. Self-esteem (β = .08, t = .96, p>05) did not significantly predict suicidalideation. This implies that adolescents whoare lacking in authoritarian parenting styleare more likely to engage in suicidal ideation. Therefore, training young people withauthoritarian parenting style (a combinationof authoritative and permissive parenting)dissuades them not to engage in suicidal ideatio
