What Diggers Drank: The AIF and its Refreshments 1914-18

    No full text
While alcohol consumption has dominated the very limited discussion of the AIF’s liquid intake, there has been no study of the totality of the role of various beverages in the health and well-being of the diggers. This paper explores the physical and cultural context of beverages consumed by the AIF, covering the complex and problematic issues of alcohol consumption, as well as non-alcoholic beverages such as tea, coffee, cocoa and humble water, exploring the ways in which these drinks played into the physical and socio-emotional lives of the soldiers. It frames the discussion in the international scholarship on beverages, and uses contemporary official sources as well as the private records of soldiers to understand the vital roles and challenges posed by all kinds of drinks in the AIF narrative

Reciprocal Teaching and Transenvironmental Programming: A Program to Facilitate the Reading Comprehension of Students with Reading Difficulties

    No full text
This article reports on experimental evaluation of the effectiveness of combining two metacognitive instructional approaches to enhance the reading comprehension skills of upper-primary poor readers. The program involves the use of reciprocal teaching procedures in the resource room and transenvironmental programming techniques by which students were instructed to employ the newly learned comprehension strategies in their homeroom reading and social studies classes. The results support previous research into the facilitative effects of reciprocal teaching on reading comprehension and of transenvironmental programming on transfer of learning across settings. Of greater importance is the finding that it is the combination of the two instructional approaches that has provided a very effective means of facilitating poor readers\u27 unprompted use of relevant strategies for enhancing text processing

    No full text
Avondale University is committed to providing quality higher research degrees. Data on candidate and graduate experiences from the institution and across the sector are central in shaping good practice and informing policy, processes and systems designed to support candidate and supervisor research training (TEQSA, 2018) and employment opportunities (Bentley & Meek, 2018). This paper reports on research conducted at our institution which focused on the following two questions: What were the differences between the way current candidates and graduates reported on their postgraduate learning experiences in the MPhil or PhD degrees at Avondale? And, what were the differences between the way males and females reported on their postgraduate learning experiences in the MPhil or PhD degrees at Avondale? In this mixed methods research project questionnaires and interviews were used to determine what is valued by current and past HDR candidates of Avondale and which areas of our HDR programs need further development. This is the second of two papers that report the findings of this project and identifies future research which may further support HDR candidates’ holistic experiences

Turning Dark Pages and Transacting with the Inner Self: Adolescents\u27 Perspectives of Reading Horror Texts

    No full text
This handbook examines the use of horror in storytelling, from oral traditions through folklore and fairy tales to contemporary horror fiction. Divided into sections that explore the origins and evolution of horror fiction, the recurrent themes that can be seen in horror, and ways of understanding horror through literary and cultural theory, the text analyses why horror is so compelling, and how we should interpret its presence in literature. Chapters explore historical horror aspects including ancient mythology, medieval writing, drama, chapbooks, the Gothic novel, and literary Modernism and trace themes such as vampires, children and animals in horror, deep dark forests, labyrinths, disability, and imperialism. Considering horror via postmodern theory, evolutionary psychology, postcolonial theory, and New Materialism, this handbook investigates issues of gender and sexuality, race, censorship and morality, environmental studies, and literary versus popular fiction
