Animal Environment and Human World: Heidegger and Human Exceptionality in the 1929 Grundbegriffe
Este artículo propone una reconstrucción del análisis comparativo ofrecido por Heidegger en los Grundbegriffe (1929) en torno a la diferencia entre animales y humanos, con el objetivo general de establecer afinidades entre Heidegger y algunas líneas contemporáneas en filosofía y estudios de cognición animal. Luego de abordar el argumento original de Heidegger, analizaré dos tipos de crítica que han sido dirigidas al mismo, para luego responder a las mismas sobre la base de la concepción heideggeriana del organismo biológico, y del carácter semiótico que yace en el corazón de su caracterización de la conducta animal y el comportamiento humano.Este artigo propõe uma reconstrução da análise comparativa oferecida por Heidegger nos Grundbegriffe (1929) sobre a diferença entre animais e humanos, com o objetivo geral de estabelecer afinidades entre Heidegger e algumas linhas contemporâneas na filosofia e nos estudos da cognição animal. Após abordar o argumento original de Heidegger, analisarei dois tipos de crítica que foram dirigidos a ele, para então responder a essas críticas com base na concepção heideggeriana do organismo biológico e no caráter semiótico que reside no cerne de sua caracterização da conduta animal e do comportamento humano. Concluirei explorando brevemente algumas consequências éticas que surgem desta abordagem, nomeadamente, que a racionalidade humana não designa uma propriedade da espécie, mas sim uma relação específica (normativa) com o meio ambiente, e portanto, que esta relação não é exclusiva (nem essencial) do animal humano.This article proposes a reconstruction of the comparative analysis offered by Heidegger in his 1929 Grundbegriffe concerning the difference between animals and humans. My main goal is to establish certain affinities between Heidegger and some contemporary lines of philosophy and studies of animal cognition. After addressing Heidegger’s original argument, I will analyze two types of criticism that have been directed at it, and then respond to these criticisms based on Heidegger’s conception of the biological organism and the semiotic nature at the heart of his characterization of animal behavior and human comportment. I will conclude by briefly exploring some ethical consequences that arise from this approach, namely, that human rationality does not designate a property of the species, but a specific (normative) relationship with the environment, and therefore, that said relationship is not exclusive (nor essential) to the human animal.Fil: Vila Pérez, Juan Manuel. Postnatal development in a specialized bird: quantitative and qualitative analysis of pelvic girdle morphological changes in Rhea Americana (Aves, Palaeognathae)
The greater rhea (Rhea americana) is the largest bird in South America. It is flightless and cursorial, with a precocial postnatal development. This study aims to describe the postnatal morphological changes in the pelvic girdle of Rhea americana, focusing on ontogenetic scaling and gross anatomy to provide insight into the potential relationship between structure and function in cursorial birds. The pelves of 18 specimens representing four postnatal stages, were studied. Gross anatomical observations and staining methods were used to identify bone and cartilage, providing detailed information about qualitative morphological changes. Quantitative changes were assessed through linear regression analysis using pelvic linear dimensions and body mass to determine allometric growth patterns. The pelvic girdles of immature specimens are characterized by unfused bones, including the vertebrae synsacrales and the medial borders of the ilia, and small cartilaginous areas at the caudal end of the ilium, ischium, pubis, antitrochanter and tuberculum preacetabulare. These immature traits persisted until the most advanced juvenile stages were studied, indicating the slow postnatal growth typical of precocial birds. Similar to other precocial birds, the greater rhea exhibits large bone areas in its pelvic girdle, providing the mechanical strength necessary for locomotion from hatching. The pelvic dimensions showed a combined pattern of allometric and isometric growth related to hindlimb function and body support. The positive allometric growth of the ilium contributed to its increasing verticalization and narrowing, providing an increased dorsoventral surface area for the attachment of the powerful proximal hindlimb muscles. In contrast, the isometric growth of the intertrochanteric width helps in the uniform distribution of loading caused by body mass, providing adequate stability and support.Fil: Picasso, Mariana Beatriz Julieta. Áreas patrimoniales en Mar del Plata: aproximaciones para su creación
Las áreas urbanas patrimoniales constituyen entidades territoriales compuestas por eslabones de valor que, en su conjunto, ameritan ser preservados. Sin embargo, algunas ciudades carecen de este tipo de enclaves y afrontan numerosas dificultades para el amparo de sus arquitecturas contextuales, como acontece en Mar del Plata. Por ello, se propone avanzar en los problemas y las potencialidades para su generación, con foco en tres barrios históricos de la ciudad.Heritage urban areas are territorial entities composed of interconnected value elements that, as a whole, deserve to be preserved. However, some cities lack these enclaves and face numerous difficulties in safeguarding their contextual architectures, as is the case in Mar del Plata. Water quality and diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli detection in surface Pampean aquatic systems
Many surface water systems are impacted by point source pollution from sewage discharges and industrial wastes, as well asdifuse pollution from agriculture and livestock farming, inducing a potential biohazard to human, animal, and environmentalhealth. This study aimed to determine the presence of diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) pathotypes and their antibioticresistance, as well as the bacteriological, physical, and chemical water quality conditions in two Pampean peri-urban rivers(Rojas and Salado rivers, Buenos Aires, Argentina) used for recreation. Additionally, we explored the impact of the surroundingland use on the water quality. In the Rojas (R) and Salado (S) rivers, wastewater discharges from treatment plants increasednutrient content and coliform abundances at specifc sampling sites (R2 and S3) and downstream (R3 and S4, respectively).Coliform abundances correlated with ammoniacal nitrogen concentrations, both exceeding recreational use guidelines. Outof 36 samples positive for DEC virulence factors, 11 DEC strains were isolated (5 enteroaggregative, 3 enteropathogenic, 1shigatoxigenic-stx1/stx2, 1 shigatoxigenic-stx2, 1 hybrid enteroaggregative-enterotoxigenic). Six strains were resistant to oneor more antibiotics. Our results suggest that diferences in E. coli pathotypes between the two rivers and the water quality ofeach sampling site are linked to the surrounding land use, evidencing both difuse and point source pollution.Fil: Nuozzi, Guillermina. De excéntricas a profesionales. La representación de las mujeres empresarias en las revistas de negocios (Argentina, 1986-2010)
In recent decades, studies on entrepreneurship and gender as well as on business history have made important advances in understanding women in business. On the one hand, pioneering studies on entrepreneurship and gender have demonstrated the historical underrepresentation of women entrepreneurs and also, recently, their increasing incorporation under supposedly empowering narratives. On the other hand, in the field of business history, gender studies have provided meaningful insights into the incorporation of women into management and corporate boards. However, there are still no studies that investigate how women entrepreneurs have been represented in Latin America. In dialogue with both fields of study and with the intention to overcome this gap, this article analyzes the representation of women entrepreneurs in the business press in Argentina between 1986 and 2010. Based on the theoretical framework of cultural sociology and following a qualitative methodological strategy, this study focuses on Apertura, a widely circulated business magazine in this country. The article shows that, although the representation of entrepreneurs remains predominantly male, since the mid-1990s there has been a significant change in the narratives through which women have been represented (from atypical to professional). This paper concludes that this narrative shift has allowed for greater visibility of women entrepreneurs and thus legitimized female entrepreneurship.Fil: Garmendia, Magdalena. Unlocking the potential of NeuroAI in Latin America
Latin America struggles to reach advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) development due to limited resources and talent retention. However, different public indexes indicate the region’s potential to become an AI hub. Our analysis of research databases indicates a growing trend towards NeuroAI — an interdisciplinary field emerging fromneuroscience and artificial intelligence — suggesting that this area of study may be a driving force behind the potential for Latin America. This paper explores how NeuroAI could enable Latin America to bridge the development gap with global AI leaders, leveraging its potential to overcome resource constraints. Critique and System: Early and Late Natorp's Philosophy
This paper presents an interpretation of the connection between Natorp´s early and late philosophy. An analysis of two versions of Natorp´s deduction of categories shows the consistent development of Natorp´s thought. Each deduction expresses, in Natorp´s words, a direction of movement between the centre and the periphery. The early deduction moves from the periphery to the centre by means of the transcendental method. The critical investigation of the conditions of possibility of mathematical-physical science reveals the structure of thought itself. The late deduction is oriented in the opposite direction, from the centre to the periphery. Thought now develops freely and establishes the systematic character of philosophy. We argue that the two deductions complement each other in a single coherent position that accounts for the relationship between critique and system. Philosophical systematics is conceived as the necessary sequel and culmination of an inquiry, the first part of which is developed according to the transcendental method.Fil: Pringe, Hernan Bruno. Tracking micro- and nanoplastics in Aedes albopictus: From ingestion to metabolic disruption
Urban aquatic environments are increasingly contaminated with micro- and nanoplastics (MNLPs), posing risks to biodiversity and human health. These environments are ideal breeding sites for larvae of the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, a key arbovirus vector. While plastic pollution is a global concern, physiological and metabolic consequences of MNPL-exposure in mosquitoes remain poorly understood. Combining epifluorescence and confocal imaging, mosquito life-history parameter assessment, and high-throughput metabolomic profiling, we investigated the effects of polystyrene MNPLs on Ae. albopictus. We demonstrated that ingested MNPLs cross the larval gut barrier, persist in various tissues, and are retained through development. Exposure did not significantly affect pre-imaginal survival or development time, but reduced larval body weight and caused profound metabolic alterations. Metabolomic analyses revealed downregulation of central carbon metabolism, particularly glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway, alongside amino acid alterations linked to stress responses. Notably, MNPL-exposure also affected juvenile hormone biosynthesis, suggesting endocrine disruption. This trend was observed in both NP- and MP-exposed larvae, with a greater number of differentially regulated metabolites following MP-treatment. Interestingly, TCA cycle dysregulation was more pronounced in NP-exposed larvae, whereas perturbations in glutathione metabolism, amino sugar metabolism and nitrogen excretion were associated with MP-exposure. These findings highlight the metabolic and physiological consequences of MNPL-exposure, with potential implications for mosquito ecology, vector capacity, and environmental dissemination of plastic contaminants. Given the role of Ae. albopictus in disease transmission and its adaptation to urban habitats, further research is needed to explore the long-term ecological and epidemiological consequences of plastic pollution on mosquito populations.Fil: Soldano, Sara. GM1 and OligoGM1 Drive Divergent α-Synuclein Aggregation Pathways
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an age-related disorder characterized by amyloid deposits of the 140-amino-acid protein α-synuclein (AS), which contribute to neuronal dysfunction and degeneration, leading to motor and cognitive impairments. AS fibrillation, the process by which the native soluble protein misfolds into insoluble cross-β-sheet fibrils, involves transient prefibrillar species with distinct biophysical features. In vitro evidence suggests that these oligomeric intermediates, rather than mature fibrils, are the primary pathogenic agents in neurodegenerative diseases. Initial studies demonstrated that AS fibril formation is inhibited upon binding to lipid vesicles containing GM1 ganglioside. Here, we report for the first time the effect of the oligosaccharide portion of GM1 on AS fibrillation under in vitro conditions. To assess the specific contribution of this hydrophilic headgroup, we synthesized the oligosaccharide moiety of GM1 (oligoGM1) and compared its effect with that of GM1 micelles. We show that oligoGM1 stimulates amyloid fibril formation, whereas GM1 reduces or inhibits AS aggregation in a lipid/protein ratio-dependent manner. AFM analysis revealed that fibrils formed in the presence of oligoGM1 were lower in height than control fibrils, and that structures compatible with AS oligomers accumulated in the presence of GM1. Using dot blotting and AFM, we further confirmed that GM1 promotes the formation of oligomeric AS species in vitro. ThT-based aggregation kinetics showed that AS aggregation in the presence of GM1 was markedly slower than with oligoGM1, supporting that oligoGM1 accelerates AS fibrillation. Finally, cytotoxicity assays in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells demonstrated that oligomers generated in the presence of GM1 exhibited higher toxicity than AS fibrils formed in the absence or presence of oligoGM1. These findings highlight the importance of the hydrophobic lipid moiety of GM1 in modulating AS aggregation and support the emerging view that the extent of fibrillar amyloid deposition does not correlate directly with neurodegenerative disease pathogenesis.Fil: Vasti, Cecilia.
