Social Sciences on the scee: the making of the short films Women and Academia in Chile

    No full text
This article analyses the potential of audiovisual language for research and communication in anthropology, based on the case study of three short films produced by La Cocina de la Investigación within the framework of the Women and Academia Project (Fondecyt 1230017). In a context of increasing delegitimization of the social sciences and the precariousness of academic work, the aim is to revalue public communication not only as a means of dissemination, but also as a legitimate and valuable medium for research. From a situated feminist perspective and drawing on contributions from visual anthropology, we reconstruct the aesthetic, narrative and methodological decisions that reconfigured academic texts in an audiovisual narrative that is committed to sensitivity and experimentation. Using archives, textiles and analog objects, the videos are situated on the art-science border and show that cinema produces knowledge through the affection of the senses. We base ourselves on the notion of transposition: a creative gesture that reinvents materials, allowing us to tell a story. In this key, we reflect on the role of anthropological fiction in revitalizing the social meaning of public science in the face of its symbolic emptiness.Fil: Deza. Rocío. Dynamic Optimization of Xylitol Production Using Legendre-Based Control Parameterization

    No full text
This paper presents an improved methodology for optimizing the fed-batch fermentation process of xylitol production, aiming to maximize the final concentration in a bioreactor co-fed with xylose and glucose. Xylitol is a valuable sugar alcohol widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and its microbial production requires precise control over substrate feeding strategies. The proposed technique employs Legendre polynomials to parameterize two control actions (the feeding rates of glucose and xylose), and it uses a hybrid optimization algorithm combining Monte Carlo sampling with genetic algorithms for coefficient selection. Unlike traditional optimization approaches based on piecewise parameterization, which produce discontinuous control profiles and require post-processing, this method generates smooth profiles directly applicable to real systems. Additionally, it significantly reduces mathematical complexity compared to strategiesthat combine Fourier series with orthonormal polynomials while maintaining similar optimization results. The methodology achieves good results in xylitol production using only eight parameters, compared to at least twenty in other approaches. This dimensionality reduction improves the robustness of the optimization by decreasing the likelihood of convergence to local optima while also reducing the computational cost and enhancing feasibility for implementation. The results highlight the potential of this strategy as a practical and efficient tool for optimizing nonlinear multivariable bioprocesses.Fil: Gutiérrez, Eugenia. Universidad Nacional de San Juan. Myrddin, or hybridisation as the disintegration of the Arthurian world

    No full text
Within the framework of neomedieval studies, we propose to analyse the Spanish comic book Myrddin (2020), by Jorge García and Gustavo Rico, focusing on the use of the medieval Arthurian imagery through its novel connection with ingredients such as aliens and spaceships. In the first section we offer a brief overview of the Arthurian subject matter and its link with mass culture, especially with science fiction and comics. Secondly, we propose a close reading of our subject, followed by a third section that dwells on the work of hybridisation that Myrddin makes with the sources and genres with which it dialogues and from which he draws. Then, we will observe how this has consequences for the treatment of temporality and the magic-science tandem. Given that both science fiction and neomedieval fictions operate as a way of critically exploring the present of production, the aim of the paper will be to observe how this rewriting influences the readings of the Arthurian myth and how this corresponds to the context of production.Fil: Huertas Morales, Antonio. CD4+ T cells facilitate replication of primary HIV-1 strains in macrophages and formation of macrophage internal virus-containing compartments

    No full text
HIV-1 replication in macrophages is highly variable with internal virus accumulation in so-called virus-containing compartments (VCCs). VCCs represent a reservoir that is shielded from the antiviral immune response. VCC formation has been studied in lab-adapted HIV-1, but it has not been investigated whether primary HIV-1 strains induce VCCs. Furthermore, although macrophages transmit HIV-1 from VCCs to CD4+ T cells, the effect of T cells on VCCs is unknown. We analyzed the ability of primary and lab-adapted HIV-1 to replicate in macrophages, the effect of non-infected CD4+ T cell coculture, and VCC formation. All HIV-1 strains replicated in CD4+ T cells, whereas only lab-adapted HIV-1 replicated efficiently in macrophage monocultures. Coculture with non-infected CD4+ T cells enhanced the replication of primary HIV-1 in macrophages, a process associated with increased VCC formation and dependent on direct cell-to-cell contact. Broadly neutralizing antibodies differentially affectedaffectedaffectedCD4+ T cell-mediated enhancement of HIV-1 replication in macrophages. CD4 antibody treatment of macrophages phenocopied the infection-promoting effect of CD4+ T cell coculture. In conclusion, non-infected CD4+ T cells facilitate primary HIV-1 replication in macrophages, and the induction of VCCs appears to be a proxy for this phenotype. VCC formation and HIV-1 replication in macrophages are promoted by non-infected CD4+ T cells in a CD4- and GP120-dependent manner. Our findings highlight the critical role of T cell-macrophage interaction in HIV-1 replication dynamics and VCC formation and call for strategies to interfere with VCCs in order to target the HIV-1 reservoir in macrophages.Fil: Victoria, Sabina. Colonia

    No full text
Fil: Sosnowski, Daniela. Toward a unified hadron-quark equation of state for neutron stars within the relativistic mean-field model

    No full text
The equation of state of dense matter remains a central challenge in astrophysics and high-energy physics, particularly at supranuclear densities where exotic degrees of freedom like hyperons or deconfined quarks are expected to appear. Neutron stars provide a unique natural laboratory to probe this regime. In this work, we present EVA–01, a novel equation of state that provides a unified description of dense matter by incorporating both hadron and quark degrees of freedom within a single relativistic mean-field Lagrangian, from which the equation of state is derived at finite temperature. The model extends the density-dependent formalism by introducing a Polyakov-loop-inspired scalar field to dynamically govern the hadron-quark phase transition, following the approach of chiral mean-field models. The resulting model is consistent with a wide range of theoretical and observational constraints, including those from chiral effective field theory, massive pulsars, gravitational-wave events, and NICER data. We analyze its thermodynamic properties by constructing the QCD phase diagram, identifying the deconfinement, chiral, and nuclear liquid-gas transitions. As a first application, we model the evolution of protoneutron stars using isentropic snapshots and explore the implications of the slow stable hybrid star hypothesis. Our findings establish EVA–01 as a robust and versatile framework for exploring dense matter, bridging the gap between microphysical models and multimessenger astrophysical observations.Fil: Celi, Marcos Osvaldo.

    No full text
Fil: Capeluto, Hernan Andres. Socio-technical networks in rural contexts: Analysing shearing schedules and functioning in Patagonian sheep farming

    No full text
The interaction between farmers and rural contractors enhances the efficiency of agricultural processes. The seasonality of agricultural activities concentrates rural contractors work during specific time windows and requires detailed scheduling. In this article, we propose a socio-technical network perspective to study the shearing processes on wool production in Northern Patagonia, Argentina. We analysed the functioning of socio-technical shearing networks (STSN), consisting of farmers and shearing contractors, throughout the development of their work schedules. Data were collected from wool shearing records and semi-structured interviews with shearing contractors, and principal component analysis were performed to characterize the STSN. The analysis of STSN highlighted two main socio-technical configurations based on shearing capacity and farm production scale. The first corresponded to shearing contractors with lower shearing capacities and a higher proportion of small-scale sheep farming farms, developing shearing schedules with lower work volumes. The second consisted of shearing contractors with higher shearing capacities and sheep farming farms of varying production scales, developing shearing schedules with higher work volumes. However, similar socio-technical configurations did not always result in identical functioning. While some prioritised efficiency by maximizing work volume in fewer farms with shorter travel times, others adapted to wider temporal and geographical scopes. This highlights the complex interplay between socio-technical configurations and performance outcomes in scheduling implementation. It reflects different underlying economic and work strategies in applying technological practices within specific social and environmental contexts. STSN illustrated how harvesting processes can be understood through a more complex perspective than mere practice, integrating social actors during technology application.Fil: Gonzalez, Ezequiel Bernardo. Slipper limpet males discriminate between non-parasitized and castrated females

    No full text
Discrimination mechanisms that allow males to select female partners are expected to evolve when a significant portion of the female population is sterilized. In this study, we investigated whether males of the slipper limpet species Bostrycapulus odites discriminate between females that are parasitically castrated by a Microphallidae trematode and non-castrated females. We hypothesized that males would discriminate between healthy and parasitized females, spend shorter periods on parasitized females, displace longer distances when encountering parasitized females, and abandon females if castrated. Field data revealed that only 7% of the males observed in copulatory positions were on parasitized females. Laboratory experiments confirmed that males associated more frequently with non-parasitized females and exclusively copulate with healthy individuals. The time spent by males on non-parasitized females was almost twice as long as that spent on parasitized females. These results indicate that males bias their mating efforts toward healthy females, and in the few cases where they interact with parasitized females, copulation does not occur. Instead, males spend brief periods on castrated females. Although uncommon in nature, this discriminative ability would be expected to benefit males by enhancing their reproductive success through mating with healthy females.Fil: Ocampo, Emiliano Hernan. Historical alterities in the key of animality: A poetic analysis of Argentine dramaturgy in regional perspective

    No full text
The persistence of the essentialist conception of an internal otherness in different cultural practices and discourses has obtained clear symbolic and political resistance in the Argentine drama of different regions of the country. Based on this diagnosis, in this article we delimit the object-problem to the figures of historical otherness represented in the dramas of Patagonia and the Argentine northwest (period 1983-2008), in particular, we will analyze those figures that have been elaborated in terms of animality. For this exploration, we limit the textual analysis to a corpus of strategic cases, according to comparative nodes that result from systematic literary and scenic archival work. In the first instance, the results obtained offer an observational map on poetic figures that contribute to refuting homogenizing and reductionist readings of alterities.Fil: Tossi, Mauricio Antonio.
