Polarization in discourse: development of a theoretical/methodological approach and study of digital activism on climate change

    No full text
Introduction: The growing interest in the issue of polarization in multiple contemporary societies requires special consideration of the discursive dimension of this phenomenon. Objectives: On one hand, this work aims to develop a theoretical and methodological approach that leverages categories from polemical discourse analysis to study polarization in public opinion. On the other hand, it seeks to apply this framework to the discursive analysis of digital activism on climate change —an area with significant cognitive potential for examining polarization. Methodology: After developing a framework with two basic dimensions (discursive object and enunciative scene), a qualitative analysis is conducted on a corpus of publications (n=248) from four key activists on the social network X over 18 months. Results: Rather than being structured around the opposition of two predominant and clearly defined groups, polarization dynamically varies within a network of ideological positions and identity-affective groupings, where the defining element is the formation of multiple “us” vs. “them” configurations that are presented as irreconcilable. On the other hand, polarization is not transversal to the field under analysis; rather, it leaves room for alternative configurations. Discussion: Discourse analysis captures multiple coexisting markers of argumentation and identity, enabling the identification of polarized positions and groups, as well as alternative configurations. Conclusion: The fields of public opinion research and discourse analysis can complement each other to produce relevant conclusions regarding the issue of polarization.Fil: Shoai, Andres. Cost-benefits analysis of social interactions: Familiarity modulates the estimation of individual contributions to joint action

    No full text
Every day, we engage in activities that require collaboration and assistance from others. Social interactions with children are distinct because they frequently result in partners contributing different amounts of effort. This study investigates whether children and adults estimate they will have to invest different amounts of effort when engaging in joint tasks compared to doing the same task by themselves. Specifically, if this engagement is with a familiar co-actor. In 4 Experiments, children and adults estimated the weight of objects when they anticipated that they would be lifted alone and when they thought they would have help. Children and adults estimated the weight of three clear baskets carrying different weights (light, medium, and heavy). The estimated weight of objects varied for adults and children depending on whether they thought they would lift alone or together. Children reliably perceived objects as lighter when they expected help from their parents compared to lifting them alone or with the help from adults. Parents, in turn, estimated objects would be heavier when they were helping their child. Overall, results suggest that we analyze the costs and benefits of helping another person and the social bond we have with them before engaging in joint actions.Fil: Speranza, Trinidad Belen. Control strategy to improve damping and transient response of VSG-based renewable power plants

    No full text
This paper presents a control strategy for renewable power plants with converter-interfaced generation (CIG) units. The proposed strategy uses virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control in CIG units to provide inertia and frequency support, and a centralized control to achieve high-performance control of active and reactive power at the point of interconnection with the grid. The centralized control is an observer-based state-feedback controller designed using system identification and model-matching techniques. First, an identification method is applied to obtain a system model. Thus, models and data from equipment used in nonconventional renewable power plants are not required for the control design. Then, a model-matching method is used to shape the transient response of the power delivered to the grid. This method improves the reference tracking performance and the response speed of the plant output power. The centralized control is formulated in the discrete-time domain to allow proper representation of time delays and direct digital implementation. The proposed control strategy can handle different time delays in the power plant communication system. The design methodology aims to improve the power control of nonconventional power plants and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid.Fil: Leon, Enrique Andres. “For reasons of hygiene and public safety”: Infrastructures and working conditions in the gastronomic sector (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 1914-1960)

    No full text
Based on the analysis of a heterogeneous set of sources including municipal and provincial regulations, authorization files, collective bargaining agreements and work manuals, this article explores the ways in which the municipal government of the city of Mar del Plata intervened in the regulation of the gastronomic sector and analyzes its effects, scope and limitations in practice. It supports the idea that, in line with what was happening at the provincial and national levels, although the regulations enacted sought to protect the health and safety of consumers, at the same time, they had a series of effects on their workers. We identified two periods in which, in spite of certain continuities, different forms of intervention in the sector were expressed: if until 1947 the gastronomic activity was understood as a subsidiary of the hospitality industry or as just another.Fil: Garazi, Débora. Effects of soil nutrient enrichment on trophic interactions between herbivorous insects and foliage spiders in Patagonian forests

    No full text
The addition of nutrients to soil can induce changes through “bottom-up” effects in soil–plant–animal interactions, impact- ing higher levels in food chains. Changes in foliar nutrient content may influence diets of herbivorous insects, subsequently altering their feeding rates and abundance. Spiders established in foliage rely on these insects for sustenance; therefore, fluctuations in the abundance of herbivorous insect communities ultimately determine the population dynamics of their spider predators. We established a long-term field experiment to investigate the effects of nutrient addition of N (nitrogen), P (phosphorus), K (potassium) and their combinations on plant–arthropod interactions. We carried out sampling in 32 plots under different nutrient addition treatments, where we captured herbivorous insects and spiders on Nothofagus antarctica plants, the most abundant plant species in the Patagonian scrubland. Our results showed that foliar nutrient concentrations had cascading effects throughout the forest food chain. Herbivorous insects (Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera orders) exhibited a positive response to the increased foliar phosphorus content, resulting in higher population densities. In addition, we found a strong positive relationship between herbivorous insect abundance and spider abundance. Our find- ings indicate that variations in the availability of soil nutrients play a crucial role in defining the structure of predator–prey interactions in forest ecosystems.Fil: Martinez, Lucia Carolina. Connections and Finsler geometry of the structure group of a JB-algebra

    No full text
We endow the Banach-Lie structure group Str(V) of an infinite dimensional JB-algebra V with a left-invariant connection and Finsler metric, and wecompute all the quantities of its connection. We show how this connection reduces toG(Ω), the group of transformations that preserve the positive cone Ω of the algebraV , and to Aut(V ), the group of Jordan automorphisms of the algebra. We presentthe cone Ω as a homogeneous space for the action of G(Ω), therefore inducing aquotient Finsler metric and distance. With the techniques introduced, we prove theminimality of the one-parameter groups in Ω for any symmetric gauge norm in V .We establish that the two presentations of the Finsler metric in Ω give the samedistance there, which helps us prove the minimality of certain paths in G(Ω) for itsleft-invariant Finsler metric.Fil: Larotonda, Gabriel Andrés. Localization of AE sources in rocks improved by enhanced arrival time localization

    No full text
Accurate localization of Acoustic Emission (AE) events in rock structures is crucial for investigating rock failure mechanisms. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of 3D AE localization in basalt-type rock samples, utilizing a novel combination of three powerful techniques: the Simulated Annealing Algorithm (SAA), an innovative AIC-EEMD picking method, and a velocity-free approach to wave propagation. We employed a localized Hsu-Nilsen source to generate elastic waves, which were captured by six AE sensors strategically placed on the rock surface. To address challenges in identifying P-wave arrivals, particularly in noisy or spurious data, we developed an innovative technique that integrates the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) with Empirical Ensemble Mode Decomposition (EEMD) to enhance signal clarity. The performance of our proposal was validated achieving an average absolute distance error of 3.74 mm. Compared to traditional methods, our technique demonstrates superior accuracy and offers enhanced robustness in the presence of noise.Fil: Vesga Ramirez, Maria Alejandra.
