The genome awakens: transposon-mediated gene regulation
Current progress in plant genomics has uncovered important roles of transposable elements (TEs) in gene regulation and has transformed their perception from ´junk DNA´ to key genomic players. Recent advances show how stress conditions trigger TE mobilization, introducing new regulatory sequences that can reshape plant responses to environmental changes. This review explores our current knowledge of how TEs, especially those located in gene-rich regions of plant genomes, regulate gene expression at different mechanistic levels. We highlight recent findings on how these elements influence transcriptional and epigenetic modifications as well as chromatin organization, and thus contribute to phenotypic diversity and plant adaptation. Understanding the regulatory potential of TEs creates novel opportunities for crop improvement and biotechnological applications, leading to a new hope for sustainable agriculture and innovation.Fil: Tossolini, Ileana del Rosario. Understanding the role of environment in associative learning of nicotine-induced place preference conditioning in zebrafish
Environmental enrichment (EE) is a well-known strategy in animal behavior to improve the welfare and health of animals in captivity. EE provides animals with stimulating and engaging environments that promote natural behaviors, cognitive stimulation and stress reduction. EE turns out to be an important strategy to increase the validity and reproducibility of behavioral data. Zebrafish is a useful experimental model for pharmaceutical and toxicological screening to study mechanisms involved in behavioral flexibility. The present work examined for the first time whether exposure to an EE during conditioning in the conditioned place preference (EE-CPP) task modulates the rewarding properties of nicotine in zebrafish. Various combinations of preferred and avoided environments (via positive and aversive cues introduced in each compartment of the CPP tank) were tested in the EE-CPP task. Positive nicotine-CPP scores were obtained in all conditions tested, except when the aversive and preferred stimuli were placed in the same compartment. When two highly preferred stimuli (brown walls and plants) were associated with dots drawn on the floor of the nicotine-matched compartment, nicotine-CPP scorewas lower. These findings suggest that threatening stimuli in the environment where the drug is administered or consumed could disrupt conditioning and reduce drug rewarding effects. A series of other behavioral parameters corroborated EE-CPP scores. Our findings underscore the need for further research to better understand how these factors interact and influence an individual’s vulnerability to nicotine addiction. Faster but not optimal: how temperature affects prey capture behaviour and physiology in the winter midget funnel-web spider Mecicobothrium thorelli Holmberg, 1882 (Araneae: Mecicobothriidae)
Temperature influences a variety of traits in ectotherms, including growth, metabolism, and behaviour and they have developed several strategies that includes behavioural and physiologicaladaptations to maintain their body function under varying thermal conditions. Mecicobothrium thorelli , a mygalomorph spider with small populations, low abundance, and winter activity, maybe especially vulnerable to temperature changes, though this remains understudied. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of different thermal ranges on prey capture behaviour and physiological traits on this species. The spiders were exposed to cold (5–10°C), medium (15–20°C), and warm temperatures (25–30°C), and we measure prey acceptance, prey detection latency, and prey attack speed by offering a prey and recording the behaviours using video. Additionally, spiders were acclimated to 5°C or 25°C for four weeks, and we measured the total content and composition of proteins and lipids. We found that M. thorelli accepted prey across all thermal ranges without distinction and demonstrated greatest ability to detect prey at moderated temperatures. urthermore, the spiders were able to capture prey at all evaluated thermal ranges, but they exhibited a faster attack speed at warm temperatures. The content and composition of proteins and lipids did not show significant differences between low and high acclimation temperatures. Despite M.thorelli being more efficient at capturing prey at warm temperatures, medium and cold temperatures appear to be sufficient for feeding, and the spider is capable of maintaining similar levels of proteins and lipids at both low and warm temperatures. Those results are consistent with the winter temperatures at which this species carries out its main survival and reproduction activities.Fil: Panchuk, Justina. Are Reversal Learning and Inhibitory Control Related? Evidence From Urban Kelp Gulls ( Larus dominicanus )
Behavioral flexibility, the ability to adjust behavior in response to environmental changes, is crucial in extreme and novel urban environments. This study assessed behavioral flexibility in both immature (n = 11) and adult (n = 12) urban Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus). This is a generalist seabird highly associated with anthropogenic food resources, making it a valuable model to explore behavioral features that could promote this habit. We examined the relationship between a reversal learning task, which assessed the speed of acquisition and subsequent reversal of a stimulus–reward association, and a detour-reaching task, which tested inhibitory control by assessing the ability to suppress ineffective behaviors. The results showed no significant effect of age on either task. All individuals were able to control impulsive behaviors and reverse a previously acquired response. The reversal phase was more challenging than the acquisition phase, with individuals making more errors, especially regressive ones (i.e., inability to learn and maintain a new stimulus–reward association). Although the difference was not statistically significant, two clear patterns emerged: slower individuals during the acquisition made fewer errors and adapted more quickly during the reversal task and those who made more errors in the cylinder task also tended to make more errors in the reversal learning task. Our findings suggest that individuals learned a new color-reward association easier than they inhibited a previously learned response. This underscores the importance of inhibitory responses during the reversal phase. In conclusion, urban gulls exhibit notable cognitive abilities in adapting their behaviors and decision-making based on environmental cues, which could be crucial when exploiting diverse and dynamic food sources. Furthermore, behavioral flexibility was found to be independent of the age of the gulls. This may be because neophobia is low at all ages in this species; its effect is not strong enough to lead to a difference between adult and juvenile gulls.Fil: Biagiotti Barchiesi, Maria Candelaria. The Theology of the People and Its Pastoral Ministry: Origins, Developments, and Legacy
Liberation theology has been the most renowned, discussed, and studied theological movement in Latin America. However, in the years following the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), an alternative and original theological perspective emerged in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and its surrounding areas. This theology sought to implement the principles of the Council within the regional context, particularly among the poor. Initially referred to as the theology of culture, it later became known as the Argentine theology of the people, or more simply, the “theology of the people” (teología del pueblo). Developing in parallel with liberation theology, the theology of the people lasted for over 50 years in Argentina. Despite its longevity and ongoing influence, it remained largely under the global radar until the pontificate of Pope Francis (2013–2025), who brought renewed attention to its ideas and practices.Fil: Forni, Pablo Floreal. Correlation between Adsorption and Photocatalysis in the Aqueous System Cr(VI)-TiO2
The photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) (0.80 mM, pH 2) using various commercially available photocatalysts (P25, UV100, PC50) was revisited, with particular attention given to Cr(VI) adsorption (as a Cr(VI)-TiO2 surface complex) and the formation of a Cr(III) hydroxide layer during the photocatalytic reduction. Cr(VI) adsorption followed a quasi-Langmuir-type isotherm, and the spectra of the Cr(VI)-TiO2 surface complex were deconvoluted into two Gaussian peaks, red-shifted when a rutile phase was present. Cr(VI) photoreduction exhibited nearly pseudo first-order kinetics, with P25 showing the highest reaction rate. Adsorbed Cr(VI) was reduced by eCB−, and the formed Cr(III) was retained over the TiO2 surface under non-equilibrium conditions, acting as a new adsorption site for Cr(VI). At longer reaction times, partial dissolution of the Cr(III) layer was observed. These findings suggest that the photoreduction kinetics are primarily governed by the slow adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the Cr(III) deposition layer. As an important conclusion, three consecutive processes never mentioned before take place: (1) reduction of adsorbed Cr(VI), (2) formation of Cr(III) over the photocatalyst and (3) adsorption of Cr(VI) over the deposited Cr(III) layer, together with partial Cr(III) redissolution. The Subordination Of The Rights To The New Merchant Lex: From The Constitutional Turn To Extractivise Expansion In Peru
El bajo peso al nacer a término (BPN-AT) constituye un indicador crítico de salud perinatal y un reflejo de desigualdades estructurales en contextos territoriales vulnerables. Este estudio analiza la evolución del BPN-AT en el Noroeste Argentino (NOA) entre 2001 y 2019, a escala departamental, con el objetivo de identificar tendencias temporales, diferencias territoriales y patrones espaciales persistentes o emergentes de desigualdad territorial. Se utilizaron datos oficiales de nacimientos (n = 1.752.876) y variables censales (pobreza y ruralidad) y ambientales (temperatura media anual y altitud promedio departamental). La metodología combinó técnicas estadísticas (regresiones lineales, ANOVA, test de Mann-Kendall) y herramientas de análisis espacial (índice de Moran global y clústeres LISA). Los resultados muestran una disminución temporal del BPN-AT entre 2001 y 2019 en la mayoría de las categorías analizadas - provincias, niveles de pobreza y ruralidad, grupos de altitud y rangos de temperatura-, con descensos más marcados en departamentos más pobres y rurales, aunque persisten brechas estructurales significativas. Se detectan diferencias significativas entre provincias, niveles de ruralidad, altitud y temperatura, y una evolución del patrón espacial que tiende a la dispersión, aunque con núcleos persistentes de alta vulnerabilidad. La cartografía multitemporal permitió visualizar la transformación de estos patrones y su vinculación con determinantes socioambientales. El estudio contribuye al campo de la salud pública y la geografía crítica al ofrecer un abordaje multiescalar y territorialmente diferenciado del BPN-AT. Se destaca la necesidad de políticas públicas focalizadas, sostenidas y basadas en evidencia territorial, capaces de atender a desigualdades estructurales persistentes.Term low birth weight (TLBW) is a critical indicator of perinatal health and a reflection of structural inequalities in vulnerable territorial contexts. This study analyzes the evolution of TLBW in Northwestern Argentina (NOA) between 2001 and 2019 at the sub-provincial scale, with the aim of identifying temporal trends, territorial disparities, and persistent or emerging spatial patterns. Official birth records (n = 1,752,876) were used alongside census variables (poverty and rurality) and environmental factors (average annual temperature and mean departmental altitude). The methodology combined statistical techniques (linear regressions, ANOVA, MannKendall test) with spatial analysis tools (global Moran’s I and LISA clusters). The results reveal a general decline in TLBW across almost all categories analyzed, particularly in poorer and more rural departments, although structural gaps remain. Significant differences were observed between provinces, levels of rurality, altitude, and temperature, as well as a spatial pattern that evolved toward dispersion, albeit with persistent high-risk clusters. Multitemporal cartography allowed the visualization of these changing patterns and their connection with socio-environmental determinants. The study contributes to the fields of public health and critical geography by offering a multiscalar and territorially differentiated approach to TLBW. It highlights the need for targeted, sustained, and territorially grounded public policies capable of addressing persistent structural inequalities.Fil: Longhi, Hugo Fernando. Violência e a pandemia de COVID-19 na megacidade: uma geografia mutável dos homicídios na Grande Buenos Aires, Argentina?
Analizamos los cambios geográficos del homicidio tras el inicio de la pandemia en el Gran Buenos Aires. Para cada homicidio se utilizó el mes y el radio censal en el que ocurrió la muerte. Se utilizó el modelo de Bernoulli para detectar tanto la concentración espacial como la concentración espacio-temporal de homicidios durante cada uno de los años 2019 y 2020. Con respecto a los conglomerados de riesgo bajo de homicidio, los conglomerados de riesgo alto de homicidio tendieron a ubicarse en áreas de alta pobreza estructural en ambos años. Durante 2020, hubo una similitud general con el patrón geográfico encontrado en 2019. Sin embargo, hubo algunas diferencias en los conglomerados de alto riesgo entre ambos años. En comparación con 2019, durante 2020 se hizo evidente una menor difusión espacial de los homicidios. No encontramos evidencia de cambios abruptos en la geografía de los homicidios con el inicio de la pandemia.Analisamos as mudanças geográficas nos homicídios após o início da pandemia na Grande Buenos Aires. Para cada homicídio, foram utilizados o mês e a área censitária em que a morte ocorreu. O modelo de Bernoulli foi utilizado para detectar a concentração espacial e espaço-temporal dos homicídios durante cada um dos anos de 2019 e 2020. Em relação aos aglomerados de homicídios de baixo risco, os aglomerados de homicídios de alto risco tenderam a estar localizados em áreas de alta pobreza estrutural em ambos os anos. Durante 2020, houve uma semelhança geral com o padrão geográfico encontrado em 2019. No entanto, houve algumas diferenças nos aglomerados de alto risco entre os dois anos. Em comparação com 2019, uma menor difusão espacial dos homicídios foi evidente durante 2020. Não encontramos evidências de mudanças abruptas na geografia dos homicídios com o início da pandemia.We analyzed the geographic changes in homicide following the onset of the pandemic in Greater Buenos Aires. For each homicide, the month and census tract in which the death occurred were used. The Bernoulli model was used to detect both the spatial concentration and the spatio-temporal concentration of homicides during the each of the years 2019 and 2020. With respect to low homicide risk clusters, high homicide risk clusters tended to be located in areas of high structural poverty in both years. During 2020, there was an overall similarity to the geographic pattern found in 2019. However, there were some differences in high-risk clusters between both years. Compared to 2019, a lower spatial diffusion of homicides was apparent during 2020. Affects, gender and protest in “Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego” by Mariana Enríquez
El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar el cruce entre afectos, género y protesta en “Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego” de Mariana Enríquez. En la medida en que es un cuento que se vincula con un contexto extraliterario específico, participa de un entramado discursivo que dialoga con posturas disidentes, perspectivas de emancipación y orientaciones políticas. En la narración, las configuraciones afectivas determinan, por un lado, la forma en la que se proyecta un orden social dominante y, por el otro, una red política alternativa que, de forma disruptiva e irreverente, logra resignificar los acuerdos, criterios y mandatos de género que condicionan a los cuerpos.The objective of this work is to analyze the intersection between affects, gender and protest in “The things we lost in the fire” by Mariana Enríquez. To the extent that it is a story that is linked to a specific extra-literary context, it participates in a discursive framework which dialogues with dissenting positions, perspectives of emancipation and political orientations. In the story, affective configurations determine, on the one hand, the way in which a dominant social order is projected and, on the other, an alternative political structure that, in a disruptive and irreverent way, manages to redefine the agreements, criteria and mandates of gender that condition our bodies.Fil: Rossini, Carolina. Unraveling Plecoptera diversity in two protected areas of Argentine Patagonia
The Plecoptera taxonomy in Patagonia is well-documented, yet their distribution remains poorly understood, hindering comprehensive ecological and biogeographical studies. This study enhances knowledge of stonefly distribution in two Patagonian national parks: Nahuel Huapi and Los Alerces. Extensive fieldwork, georeferenced species records, and geographic information system data integration were conducted. Species richness was calculated using polygons (0.1° x 0.1° pixels) across ecoregions, with species indexed from rare to ubiquitous. Cluster analyses revealed faunal affinities across ecosystem complexes, and richness estimators (Jack1, Jack2, and Chao2) highlighted knowledge gaps. Results showed uneven species distribution, with the highest richness polygon (n = 19) in Los Alerces. The Northern Moist Forests hosted the most species, followed by the Transitional Cypress-Beech Forests. The rarest species were also found in these two complexes, as well as the Ecotone Steppe-Forest. Cluster analysis revealed strong affinities between the Northern Moist Forests of Nahuel Huapi and Ecotone Steppe-Forest. Richness estimators suggested up to 23 undocumented species. Though much remains to be learned about Plecoptera distribution in Patagonia, this study emphasizes the critical role of national parks in conserving biodiversity and provides a foundation for future conservation strategies, identifying new taxa records, including southernmost distributions.Fil: Duarte Simoes, Tacio Vitor.
