    No full text
Aim: Maculopapular eruption (MPE) due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasingly reported. This study aimed to evaluate COVID-19 patients presenting with MPE and compare them with COVID-19 patients without MPE. Materials and Methods: COVID-19 patients with and without MPE followed up in a single tertiary center between March 2020 and December 2020 were assessed and compared in terms of demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings. Results: A total of 114 COVID-19 patients (female: male ratio=0.4: 1, mean age: 51.44 +/- 16.62 years) confirmed by total polymerase chain reaction testing were evaluated. Patients with MPE during COVID-19 (n=44) and patients without MPE during COVID-19 (n= 70) were divided into two groups and compared. Among clinical findings, the incidence of fever, myalgia, anosmi and ageusia, rhinorrhea, and/or nasal congestion was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients with MPE. In terms of laboratory findings, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, vitamin D, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, procalcitonin, ferritin, fibrinogen median levels were significantly higher in COVID-19 patients with MPE. In complete blood count, median hemoglobin, red blood cell, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts were also significantly higher in the MPE group. In the multivariate logistic regression model, ALP was independently associated with MPE in COVID-19 patients (odds ratio: 1.099, 95% confidence interval: 1.056-1.144, p<0.00). Conclusion: The MPE in COVID-19 patients may be indicative of increased inflammation and organ damage. Early diagnosis and isolation of these patients and close follow-up are crucial in reducing the risk of organ damage and severe disease. In addition, ALP is an important laboratory parameter related to MPE in COVID-19 patients

Introduction Exome-sequencing (ES) methods enable accurate diagnosis in challenging cases and uncover secondary findings (SFs) potentially linked to life-threatening or preventable diseases. The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) publishes a list detailing which SFs should be reported and regularly updates it. We aimed to compare results across different SF versions in patients and explore additional SFs to identify potential new recommendations for SF reporting. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 724 patients to identify ACMG SFs using the QIAGEN Clinical Insight (QCI) Interpret database. Furthermore, we investigated pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in cancer and cardiovascular disease genes not listed in ACMG SFs, as well as genes associated with common diseases prevalent in our country. Methods ACMG SF v3.2 variants were identified in 56 patients (7.7%), with no observed differences between ACMG v3.1 and v3.2. Additionally, our analysis revealed that 208 patients harbored non-ACMG SF variants. Conclusion In this study, we focused on known SFs and identified additional variants that could be considered as new recommendations. While expanding the list of SFs can pose challenges during analyses and genetic counseling, a thoughtfully curated SF list has the potential to enhance patient care and improve clinical outcomes

    No full text
This study aims to determine and compare the reference values of the haematological and biochemical blood parameters of two fish species collected from the Gokova Bay (Mugla, South-Western of Turkiye): the non-native and invasive Randall's threadfin bream, Nemipterus randalli and the native Common pandora, Pagellus erythrinus. Both species inhabit the same environment and compete for resources. Blood samples were collected from a total of 100 fish samples (50 N. randalli and 50 P. erythrinus) which were caught from a depth of 30 to 60 meters between February 2023 and July 2024. Therefore, sampling could be carried out in summer and winter seasons when the water temperature varies significantly. The results indicate that red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) levels significantly increases in summer (p 0.05). However, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels of N. randalli were statistically significant different compared to P. erythrinus in summer and winter samples (p < 0.05). Additionally, the highest lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) value was measured from N. randalli in summer sampling and this was found to be significantly different from other groups (p < 0.05). Multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis revealed differences between the blood parameter results of N. randalli and P. erythrinus individuals. This study provides important data about the physiological adaptations of haematological and biochemical blood parameters of the two species to environmental factors. The similarity in haematological and biochemical parameters revealed the possibility that N. randalli could distribute to new habitats where P. erythrinus is distributed. This suggests a further potential distribution of the invasive N. randalli and the need for a careful monitoring.anakkale Onsekiz Mart University Research Projects Coordination OfficeThe authors would like to thank to Prof. Dr. Daniela GIANNETTO for language editing

Health management in educational institutions is a comprehensive process that aims to protect and improve the physical, mental and social health of students and staff. The aim of the study was to reveal health management practices in schools in Canada and Turkey. The research was conducted as a qualitative research in the form of a literature review. The information obtained in the research was analyzed with content analysis. The similarities and differences in health management models, legal regulations, resource use and implementation effectiveness in educational institutions of Canada and Turkey were analyzed. While Canada offers a flexible and dynamic education system with local governments determining education policies within a federal structure, Turkey has a centralized structure and manages education policies through a single authority. These differences have significant consequences in health management in educational institutions of both countries. Health practices in Canadian educational institutions take a comprehensive approach to protect and improve students' physical and mental health. Health programs, mental health services and the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits contribute to students becoming healthier individuals. School nursing practices in educational institutions play an important role in meeting students' health needs and providing a healthy learning environment. Health practices in educational institutions in Turkey, similar to Canada, include various services aimed at protecting the physical and mental health of students. Practices such as health screenings, emergency health services, psychological counseling and guidance, nutrition programs, sports activities, health education, immunization programs and chronic disease management are carried out to improve the general health status of students and encourage a healthy lifestyle. School nursing plans to support and develop student health and help students maintain a healthy educational life. In line with the findings obtained in the study, it is recommended that health management in educational institutions in Turkey should evolve into a more flexible and participatory model, and that the rate of school nurses should be increased and expanded. Adapting Canada's successful health management practices to Turkey's current structure offers an important opportunity for the protection and development of student health. This study aims to compare health management practices in educational institutions in Canada and Turkey and to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the educational systems of both countries. It is also a basic reference for comparative educational studies and aims to contribute to the creation of more effective health management policies in educational institutions in both countries. The results of the study will provide suggestions for Turkey to develop its own system by benefiting from Canada's experience in health management in educational institutions. In this context, an important basis is being created to increase the effectiveness of health management in educational institutions in both countries

This study examines the effectiveness of the Fenton reagent, commonly used in wastewater treatment, in removing gaseous hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is a harmful gas commonly found in industrial and domestic wastewater treatment and is a significant environmental concern due to its environmental impacts. The Fenton reagent is a chemical mixture formed by the combination of hydrogen peroxide and iron(II) salt, which produces hydroxyl radicals. These radicals can oxidize compounds like hydrogen sulfide, which cause odor and toxicity, rendering them harmless. This study experimentally investigates the effect of different Fenton reagent concentrations, pH levels, and reaction times on the removal of gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The results indicate that the Fenton reagent is an effective method for hydrogen sulfide removal. This research can help us better understand the potential and application possibilities of the Fenton reagent in wastewater treatment

The Effects of Curcuminoids Supplementation on Serum Adipokines: An Umbrella Review of Meta-Analyses of Randomized Controlled Trials

    No full text
This umbrella review of randomized clinical trials aims to provide a unique and detailed understanding of curcumin's effects on adipokines, adding a novel perspective to the existing body of research. We carried out a thorough search of international databases up to April 2024, including MEDLINE, SciVerse Scopus, and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science. A random-effects model was utilized to evaluate the impact of curcuminoid on adipokines. The umbrella review incorporated meta-analyses that examined the effects of curcuminoid supplementation on adipokines, presenting associated effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (CI). We applied the GRADE and AMSTAR (A Tool for Assessing the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews system) to assess the certainty of the evidence and the quality of the systematic reviews. Our analysis of one meta-analysis, including 14 RCTs plus 1 RCT not included in meta-analyses, revealed significant and impactful findings. We found a substantial increase in serum adiponectin levels with curcuminoid supplementation, indicating a positive effect (SMD: 0.9; 95% CI, 0.4 to 1.3, p < 0.001; I-2 = 92.2%). However, we did not observe a significant impact on serum leptin. The GRADE assessment supports the effect of curcuminoids on adiponectin with moderate evidence, while the impact on leptin was supported by low evidence. Curcuminoid supplementation significantly increases serum adiponectin levels with moderate-quality evidence and has no significant impact on serum leptin. This provides evidence as to the safety and effectiveness of curcuminoids in enhancing adiponectin without adverse effects, reassuring the audience about their potential in adipokine research.Neyshabur University of Medical SciencesThis research received support from the Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences. Gastric acid challenge: Mechanical proficiency and surface gloss of tooth-colored restorative materials

    No full text
BackgroundTo evaluate surface microhardness, roughness, and gloss changes of tooth-colored restorative materials [a direct composite (G-aenial A'Chord), an indirect composite (Gradia Plus), an ormocer (Admira Fusion), a giomer (Beautifil II), and an alkasite (Cention N)] after exposure to simulated gastric acid.MethodsA total of 110 disc-shaped specimens (22 discs of each material) were prepared using silicone molds (8 mmx2 mm) and exposed to either gastric acid or artificial saliva (control). Surface roughness (Ra), gloss (GU), and microhardness (VHN) were measured at baseline and after 96-hour of immersion in the solutions and the respective changes (triangle Ra, triangle GU, triangle VHN) were calculated. Intergroup comparisons were performed using ANOVA (Tukey post hoc) or Kruskal-Wallis tests (Bonferroni correction). Independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparisons of each material across immersion media, while paired t-test was applied for time-dependent analyses.ResultsIn the gastric acid medium, changes in all parameters led to significant differences among restorative materials, while in the artificial saliva medium, significant differences were observed in triangle VHN and triangle GU. The statistically significant difference between immersion media was observed in both triangle VHN and triangle Ra values for the giomer group, and in only triangle VHN values for the alkasite and indirect composite groups. In the gastric acid medium, the decrease in VHN and GU values was significant across all subgroups, while the increase in Ra was statistically significant only in the giomer and alkasite groups.ConclusionsWhile the giomer group exhibited the most significant changes in roughness and microhardness following exposure to gastric acid, all tested materials executed clinically admissible results regarding surface gloss.Clinical trial numberNot applicable

α-Alumina (α-Al2O3) ceramic microfiltration membranes in industrial wastewater treatment: Production, design, filtration behavior and performance

There is a large amount of oily waste in the wastewater used in the metal industry. Oily wastewater is one of the most dangerous pollutants. New treatment methods are very expensive and ineffective. Nowadays, filtration or separation processes are useful for oily wastewater treatment. In this paper, microfiltration with tubular ceramic membrane from α-alumina (α-Al2O3) powder was synthesized for oily wastewater treatment. Cross flow velocity (CFV) and transmembrane pressure (TMP) were predicted to have an effect on the permeate flux over the working system, while CFV did not cause a noticeable improvement over the working system. The proposed operating conditions were the experimental set with TMP of 4 bar, CFV of 1 m/s and temperature of 37.5 °C. According to the results, it is proposed to replace this system with conventional wastewater treatment methods. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l
