Fluxo de Caixa, ADRs e Restrições de Crédito no Brasil

Following Almeida, Campello and Weisbach (2003), we use the link between financial constraints and firm’s demand for liquidity to test the effect of financial constraints on firm policies in Brazil. The effect of financial constraints can be captured by a firm’s propensity to save cash out in addition of cash inflows. While constrained firms should have a positive cash flow sensitivity of cash, unconstrained firms’ cash savings should not be systematically related to cash flows. Using 2SLS method to deal with endogeneity problems, we estimate the cash flow sensitivity of cash using a large sample of Brazilian manufacturing firms over the 1995-2007 period and, using the access to international financial markets trough ADRs as a criterion for financial constraint, we find that firms that are more likely to be financially constrained display a significantly positive cash flow sensitivity of cash, while unconstrained firms do not.

Dear readers, in this September/2018 issue we would like to welcome a new member of our Scientific Editorial Body, Prof. Marcia Juliana d'Angelo. She holds a PhD in Business Administration from Mackenzie Presbyterian University and currently is an associate professor at FUCAPE Business School. Ms. d’Angelo’s interests include strategy and organizations, and is a fine complement to our editorial body, especially regarding qualitative methodologies. We would also like to announce a new feature. Now, submitting authors may indicate suitable reviewers for their article. Although it is only a recommendation and it is not binding nor mandatory, we believe it will help our editors in choosing reviewers with strong expertise on the theme of the paper. Our issue begins with an article on audit rotation and earnings quality by Silvestre, Costa and Kronbauer. It brings insights on the mandatory audit rotation adopted in Brazil, and should be of interest to regulators and practitioners. Their results point that not all rotations are equal. link bit.ly Next, Júlio and Tureta bring an analysis on the organization for the parade of a samba school. It is a qualitative research that indicates material reuse on an attempt to balance luxury and scarce resources. link bit.ly Yoshikuni, Favaretto, Albertin and Meirelles study the relation between strategic information systems (SIS) and innovation, ambidexterity and performance. It appears that SIS are strongly and positively related to these outcomes, a result of interest for managers and firms. link bit.ly The fourth paper, by Santos, Pereira & Rodrigues, is an example of the importance of analyzing efficiency on the use of taxpayers’ money. Their results indicate that the lack of oversight leads to the waste of public resources, a first-order problem in a developing country like Brazil. link bit.ly The next paper, by Cezar and Fantinel, studies social representations and the solidarity economy. Their findings indicate that crafts are seem as a therapy, in addition to work, and that solidarity economy is judged as the fittest format for commercialization. link bit.ly On another information systems-related article, Pedron, Picoto, Colaco and Araújo investigate how Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software is related to innovation. The interviewees point that CRM leads to innovation by allowing the organization to sense, seize, and reconfigure both market opportunities and threats. link bit.ly We hope you enjoy the diversity of themes of this issue. Good reading! Fabio Motoki – Editor-in-Chief - http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7464-3330Caro leitores, Nesta edição de setembro / 2018, gostaríamos de receber um novo membro do nosso Corpo Editorial Científico, a Profa. Marcia Juliana d'Angelo. Dear readers, Since our last editorial I represented Brazilian Business Review in two important events. The first event, SciELO 20 Years, took place in São Paulo from Sep 26th to 28th with a focus on open science. BBR sponsored the event as a “Friend of SciELO”, being a proud member of the SciELO Network and supporter of open science initiatives. The second event, EnANPAD 2018, took place in Curitiba from Oct 3rd to 6th. For the first time in history, a “Meeting the International Editors” took place at EnANPAD, with invited editors from BBR (Brazilian Business Review), BAR (Brazilian Administration Review), Latin American Business Review, IT&P (Information Technology and People), and IJEM (International Journal of Emerging Markets). We briefly presented BBR’s vision and editorial policies and then participated of a Q&A between members of the academia and the editors. Figshare also began distributing BBR’s contents, a feature we announced in May this year. Figshare is a repository meant to extend how research is disclosed, allowing authors to share other materials besides the article itself, such as presentations, datasets and code. It is one more channel to improve discoverability of BBR’s articles, aligned with the journal’s strategy of internationalization. You may take a look at the platform here https://scielo.figshare.com/bra-bbr. Without further ado, we present this edition’s articles. Louzada & Gonçalves study how market concentration may affect the relation between the firm’s balance sheet composition and competitive advantage. Their results indicate that firm-level characteristics exhibit greater explanatory power of firm performance than industry-level characteristics, and that the relation between firm characteristics and performance depends on industry characteristics. http://bit.ly/2wJh0BO  Next, Paula & Silva study the relationships between internal and external R&D, innovation performance and financial performance. Results point to a positive relation between external R&D and innovation, while internal R&D positively moderated the relation between strategic alliances and innovation performance. Interestingly, innovation performance exhibited a negative relation with future financial performance, apparently because the 2-year lag was not enough to capture the effect of new revenue from new products and services. http://bit.ly/2Q4Kstv On the third article, Storti, Paiva & Vieira analyze the networks of relationships developed by a Brazilian multinational in each of the countries in which it operates. Results indicate that both the external environment and the adopted strategies affect the types of relationships formed. A differentiation strategy is related to a greater collaboration, whereas a cost strategy seems to result in low trust. http://bit.ly/2MNu4LE The fourth article, by Martins, Farias, Albuquerque & Pereira, studies the acceptance of e-books. Using a large sample of 1,013 respondents, the authors find that Habit, Effort Expectancy and Facilitating Conditions are important antecedents of the adoption of e-books, while Age, Gender and Experience moderate them. http://bit.ly/2CN9Amn Ribeiro & Cherobim explore the relation between environmental variables – economic, educational, and social – and innovation level. The research is based on Brazilian country-level data, as well as state-level data using São Paulo, Paraná and Sergipe. Results indicate that these environmental variables change over time, forming different environmental configurations. Additionally, the evidence points that depending on the configuration the same variable may have a positive or negative relation with innovation, and this non-linear relation poses a challenge to measuring and managing innovation. http://bit.ly/2R0LUOG Finally, Porto & Soyer research the influence of foreignness and country of origin on consumer-based brand equity. Data from an experiment indicate a positive and direct effect of foreignness on associated image and willingness to pay a premium price, while country of origin moderated the relation between foreignness and brand equity. These findings could prove useful on the management of brands. http://bit.ly/2Rr2ruv Good reading! Fabio Motoki – Editor-in-Chief - http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7464-333

oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/4The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of innovation investments on net sales from major national sectors. The data was collected from the free access to the Technological Innovation Research (PINTEC) database. To proceed the analysis, we collected the PINTEC data from the years 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2011, consolidating them in a specific way. The analysis were developed through regressions of panel data with fixed effects, according to Hausman test, and the definition of large scale sectors was based on the median of net sales. The results suggest that, on average, for the large scale sectors the acquisition of machinery & equipment and industrial projects & other technical improvements are statistically relevant variables to increase the net sales.

The CRM process is supported by the relationship orientation and the customer knowledge management derived from data collection, data consolidation, data analysis and knowledge distribution to support decision making. The interaction between CRM and Knowledge Management (KM) is quite intuitive, especially when both are supported by Information Technology. The goal of this paper is to develop a Customer Knowledge Management (CKM) theoretical model in order to assess its contribution to the relationship management of students at one of the largest higher education private groups of the world. A state of contrasts comparing groups of students exposed to CKM-designed marketing campaigns (approximately 600,000 students) and unexposed ones (approximately 17,000 students) demonstrated how the proposed model effectively contributed to CRM initiatives. It was found that students exposed to marketing activities had a higher reenrollment rate than those that were not reached by the campaign.

The objective of this research was to examine the influence of macroeconomic and institutional factors when determining the capital structure of Latin American companies from 2009 to 2014, and also analyze if the significance of these factors to explain the capital structure of the companies is changed taking into account the financing composition. We used hierarchical linear modeling to process data. The main results pointed that, both the representative variables of characteristics of the firm and representative variables of countries are important determinants of the capital structure of the companies. However the variables of the firm explain a much higher percentage of variance of leverage. Thus, we emphasize that there is still much to be done in order to analyze the effects of macroeconomic and institutional factors. We expect that this study has created contributions to the national literature, by using a theoretical and also econometric approach that has not been much explored so far.

    Get PDF
Debates on banking regulation have increasingly given rise to a discussion on the relationship between the loan loss provision and business cycles. Provisioning rules for credit losses for banks in Brazil have mixed system characteristics, which could theoretically lead banks to pro-cyclical or countercyclical behavior, which reinforces the need for research to indicate what has actually been the effect of these provisions in the economy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between banks’ provisioning for credit losses and business cycles in Brazil, in an attempt to confirm its nature, a condition capable of avoiding potentiating the effects of economic contraction or expansion. Using an econometric model with accounting and macroeconomic variables, the survey involved 91 commercial banks in the period from 2001 to 2012. Confirming that the delay in payments of principal and charges is a key condition for the recognition of banking provisions in Brazil, which highlights its predominantly retrospective nature, the results point to the existence of a pro-cyclical behavior by the banks surveyed, indicating that when GDP is on the rise, provisions tend to fall and vice versa.

Contemporaneously, in market view, the market of symbolic goods of religion is characterized by the pluralism of options that the postmodern individual has to join religious institutions. In this scenerie, it establishes a situation of fierce rivalry for the achievement of competitive advantage. The according exploratory and qualitative research aimed at analyzing the marketing strategies developed by the IURD leaders with their stakeholders in the Solomon’s Temple. The results show that in the competitive market of symbolic goods of religion, the magnitude and sumptuousness of megatemples construct a brand image that places the theological concerns of a future life or of salvation in the background, prioritizing practical solutions to everyday problems .The contribution of the research is to explain how the neopentescostal churches reinterpret traditional values of religiosity, by accepting with naturalness what had been rejected by traditional Protestantism and, thus, to consolidate and at the same time to legitimize the new dynamics of the religions that they act with the logic of the market.

Dear Readers,   We present the third edition of the Brazilian Business Review in 2017. Along with it, we announce an important breakthrough for the journal: within the next few days, our submissions system will be the ScholarOne, used by most of the journals in the field of Administration in the world. Certainly, this is a progress that will allow authors, reviewers and editors a greater fluidity in the process of submission and revision, given that most of us are already accustomed to using such a system in other journals. We hope, with advances like this, to provide a better experience to the users of the journal, so that we all use our energies: to produce and to revise academic works that allow the advance of the science in the business area.   In this edition, we present six articles. The article that opens the edition is called " Analysis of Life Cycle Stages of Publicly-held Companies in Brazil: a study based on accounting-financial variables " and is authored by Wando Belffi da Costa, Marcelo Alvaro da Silva Macedo, Karen Yukari Yokoyama and José Elias Feres de Almeida. Dear readers, Once more BBR announces with satisfaction the publication of the Special Edition of the Brazilian Business Review, a result of the papers presented at 2 nd BBR Conference in December 2014. This second event of BBR had the participation of many international researchers, including Helena Maria Alves of the University of Beira Interior in Portugal, Robert Morgan of Cardiff University in UK, Rafael Rogo of Sauder School of Business in Canada. Alexandre Schwartsman opened the event with the lecture "Fragile Things" about macroeconomic outlook in recent years, culminating in the current crisis. The presentations of all articles and lectures were held in English, since the goal of the 2nd BBR Conference was the internationalization of the Journal. The papers presented at the event had not only the evaluation of the referees, but also to the comments of the panelists during the event, which contributed to the development of each work. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the participation of all. BBR ´s Special Edition is composed of six articles, exploring topics in accounting, marketing, project management and finance. The first article Market Efficiency and Organizational Corruption: Study on the Impact on Shrareholder Value from Renata Crosara Miari, José Marcos de Carvalho Mesquita and Daniel Jardim Pardini evaluates the influence of the disclosure of the involvement of companies in acts of corruption on creating shareholder value. The results indicate that the market does not act efficiently, given that despite the fall in share prices, over time, they return to levels close to those seen before the release of the event. In the second article, Dysfunctional Consumer Behavior: Proposition of a Measurement Scale, Marilia Lara Marcondes Machado de Oliveira and Andres Rodriguez Veloso developed a scale to discriminate between consumers who act improperly from the rules set by society, as this type of consumer provides financial losses for businesses. The thirst article, Psychological Determinants of Academic Achievement in Accounting: Evidence from Brazil from Samuel de Paiva Naves Mamede, Alessandra Vieira Cunha Marques, Pablo Rogers, Gilberto José Miranda, highlights together behavioral and socio-demographic variables that influence the behavior and performance of students in the area of ??accounting. Among the variables are smoking, time of experience in accounting, gender and age. The fourth article, Conditioning Factor of Late Payment of Trade Credit from Claudinê Jordão de Carvalho brings further evidence about the practice of financial crime of commercial credits. The low level of punctuality in payments to suppliers could adversely affect the liquidity of the lender and be transmitted to all value chain companies generating uncertainty in the business environment. The fifth article, Delisting Brazilian Public Companies: Empirical Evidence about Corporate Governance Issues from Patricia Maria Bortolon and Annor da Silva Junior seeks to identify the determinants that led to the delisting of companies listed on BM & FBovespa between the years 2001 to 2012. Among the identified factors are the concentration of control, the low number of shares outstanding, low liquidity, high cash level and company size. The sixth article, Inquiry into the Conceptual Dimensions of Project Portfolio Management from the authors, Pedro Bruno de Souza, Jorge Carneiro and Rodrigo Bandeira-de-Mello, identifies the main criteria and dimensions in the measurement of project portfolio management performance under the theoretical and practical perspective to the development of a conceptual model. The staff of the 2nd BBR Conference wishes everyone a great read of this special issue and recalls that the 3rd BBR Conference will be in 2017, when it will be waiting for new Submissions.   Prof. Dra. Graziela Fortunato 2nd BBR Conference Coordinato
