    Initial Results of Growth Diagnosis of Paddy-Field Rice Using Hyper-Spectral Camera in Growth Experiment of Oryza Sativa 'Koshihikari' Made in Fukui

    A growth experiment for developing better growth method of Oryza sativa 'Koshihikari' made in Fukui was carried out in 2015 by using 4 rice pods in a glass house under the collaboration with Fukui University of Technology, Fukui prefectural agricultural experiment station, Sakai agricultural high school and Yamada-Giken Co., Ltd. Our aim in the experiment was to make sure the effectiveness of hyper-spectral information ingrowth diagnosis of rice. As a first step for developing useful remote sensing technique to produce good taste rice in Fukui prefecture, we selected leaf color and content rate of protein in harvested rice as the targets of estimation. During the period of experiment, the leaf color of rice had been directly measured once a week by SPAD-502 which is well-used in-situ leaf color measurement instrument. Simultaneously, the spectral information of leaf had been observed by using a hyper-spectral camera HSC1702. In addition, the content rate of protein after the harvest was measured by Fukui prefectural agricultural experiment station. The result of correlation analyses between leaf color data and NDSI spectral indices derived from the hyper-spectral data shows that NDSI spectral indices using near-infrared and green wavelengths are effective for estimating leaf color of rice through different growing stages. The results also show that NDSI indices using reflectance of blue region are effective for estimation of content rate of protein. These results are basically consistent with those of previous studies, which indicates our measurement and data analyses were carried out successfully. However, a further study is needed to decide the optimal combination of wavelengths in NDSI index and to confirm the reproducibility of coefficient of regression line obtained in this study

    Relationship between Operating Conditions and Exhaust Gas Characteristics of Diesel Engines Using Bio Fuel

    Bio Diesel Fuel (BDF) has attracted attention as a fuel alternative to petroleum. BDF contains a lot of oxygen, but the ignitability is inferior because the viscosity is high compared with gas oil. However, the previous researches found out that while gas oil and BDF are different fuel properties, the operating conditions to lose the remarkable difference of the thermal efficiency and the exhaust gas characteristic when using these with Diesel engines. That is, the effects that BDF has on the state of combustion and the exhaust gas characteristic of diesel engines are not clear. In this research, operation characteristics were examined while paying attention to the PM exhaust characteristic that changed by the combustion state by the performance examination of the diesel engine using BDF. As a result, it was clarified that more excellent operating characteristics during BDF use than when gas oil used can be obtained in the operating conditions with much supply fuel

    Development of a New Test to Evaluate Cognitive Decision Making in Toddlers Towards a Proposal of Risk-avoidance Behavior Taken from Exercise Play

    In toddlers, exercise stimulation affects neurodevelopment. Neurodevelopment is very important at the time of risk avoidance because it also affects the quality of cognitive decision making. Here, this study aims to develop a new test to evaluate cognitive decision making in toddlers; based on the results, it aims to propose an effective exercise play to promote risk avoidance. To develop a highly practical and valid evaluation method for a test procedure that toddlers can easily understand, a measuring instrument (Takei Scientific Instruments-original model) for a game-like rock-paper-scissors test was produced. This instrument displays images of the hand signals for rock, paper, or scissors above a monitor and is able to measure the reaction time for toddlers to press a button on a monitor to the hundredth of a second. Cognitive decision making was evaluated based on the selection-reaction time. The selection-reaction time in toddlers (win condition, tie condition) and a seven-item physical fitness test were evaluated. The results showed a significant correlation between selection-reaction time (win condition) and basic motor skills (running, jumping, throwing).Risk-aversion behavior requires the development of cognitive decision making. Therefore, it is important to have an effective exercise that promotes risk avoidance and contains elements such as running, jumping, and throwing. Thus, we have proposed a paper-rock-scissors basket-goal game that includes the skills of running, jumping, and throwing, and it is presently being implemented at nursery schools and promoted via public awareness

    A Capital Asset Pricing Model with Time-varying Beta and Markov-switching Volatility

    We investigate time variation in Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) betas across stock market volatility regimes. For our analysis, we jointly model TOPIX Core 30 Index constituents stock returns using three-state Markov-switching process, with betas allowed to vary in low, medium, and high volatility regimes. The time-varying betas help explain market dynamics much better than the unconditional CAPM. Our empirical findings suggest strong evidence of time variation in betas across three-state volatility regimes in almost all the cases. With this perspective, it is clear that the proposed model in this study would be useful for financial practitioners who invest in stock markets

    Using the Wingate Test to Identify Time-Series-based Relations between the Ankle Joint Flexibility and Kick Speed

    In this study, we examined the Wingate Test in conjunction with ankle joint flexibility and kick speed for 11 athletes. In the Wingate Test, we calculated the peak revolutions and peak power values of six sections by dividing each of these measurements by five seconds. Moreover, we measured the kick speed in each section by dividing 45 m of a long-course swimming pool (excluding the initial five meters) into six sections, each of which measured 7.5 m. With this information, we calculated the correlation coefficient between the range of motion of ankle joint and the kick speed for each section; we also calculated the correlation coefficient between the peak revolutions and the average power values via the Wingate Test as well as the kick speed for each section. We found a significant correlation between the range of motion of ankle joint and the kick speed in sections one, two, four, five, and six. Furthermore, we found a significant correlation between peak revolutions and kick speed in the first four sections of the Wingate Test. Therefore, we conclude that the instantaneous power exhibition in which the legs are moved quickly, i.e., peak revolutions, correlate to the kick speed, which is close to the top speed immediately after the start to middle stage; however, in situations where kick speed is maintained in the latter half, it is correlated to the flexibility of ankle joints

    Examine the Relationship between Dynamic Balance and Physical Fitness Tests in Preschool Children

    This study examined the relationship between dynamic balance tests and various physical fitness tests in preschool children. The subjects were 22 preschool children (age, 5.0+0.4years; height, 107.3+5.7cm; weight, 17.9+3.4 kg). Dynamic balance was assessed by walking the length of a balance beam several times (beam height, 30cm; width, 10cm; length, 200cm) and walking a pathway (width, 10cm; length, 200cm). Physical fitness was assessed with activities such as a 25-meter run, continuous bilateral hopping, upright hand standing, standing long jump, and catching a ball. Significant moderate or high correlations were found between the dynamic balance tests (r = 0.57), between walking the balance beam and continuous bilateral hopping tests (r = 0.47) and catching a ball tests (r = 0.71), and between walking a pathway and catching a ball tests (r = 0.57). In conclusion, both walking a balance beam and pathway showed a relationship to coordination. Walking a balance beam successfully was also positively correlated with agility. However, the relationships between these two dynamic balance tests were not as high. Hence, walking a balance beam may be related to a different ability than what is needed to walk a pathway

    Introduction of Psychology Education to Enhance Critical Thinking for Freshmen

    This study examined the effect of implementation to enhance critical thinking skills in a subject for High School/University Articulation and “Introduction to Psychology” class for freshmen. College students had taken lesson in critical thinking at once of 15-times class in a subject for High School/University Articulation, and in part of one lesson in “Introduction to Psychology” class. College students did worksheets after receiving lectures about critical thinking in both classes. In the follow-up study had about one year after the class of a subject for High School/University Articulation had finished, the results of the implementing group demonstrated significantly higher level of critical thinking disposition questionnaire than the control group. But, no significant results have been demonstrated at pre- and post-test for students in “Introduction to Psychology” class. From the results, it suggested that it is necessary to design and implement the teaching materials and method for enhancing students’ critical thinking skills

    Interactive Emotion Communication (IEC) has been proposed[1] and studied so far. IEC consists of three processes, recognition of human emotion, generation of robot emotion, and expression of robot emotion. Conventional studies designed those processes by hand one by one. This report proposes a comprehensive system that learns human emotion recognition and robot emotion expression both. The proposed system is a recurrent neural network introducing Russell’s circumplex model explicitly and learns human emotion and corresponding motion pattern simultaneously. We show the validity of the proposed method through experiments
