    Electronic States in Insulating Polymer -Effects of UV Irradiation

    In order to clarify effects of UV irradiation on Surface electric states of insulating polymers, measurements of contact potential difference by Kelvin method and measurements of valence band spectrum by XPS were carried out. Charge transfer range was observed at metal-insulating polymer interface. Charge transfer range of PVK (polyvinyl carbazole) and PVP (poly-2-vinyl pyridine) were about 165 nm and 55nm, respectively. The Fermi level of PVK became higher with UV irradiation. On the other hand, the Fermi level of PVP became lower with UV irradiation.The changes of Fermi level are considered to be due to oxidation and morphological change

    EEG Analysis of Imagined Movement for EEG-Based Brain-Computer Interface

    The mirror neuron system (MNS) has been found to be active during perceived, imagined,and actual movement. The method by which mirror neuron activity can be monitored exploits the difference in firing patterns of resting versus active sensorimotor neurons; in the resting state, synchronous firing is present, which produces large amplitude 8- to 13-Hertz oscillations known as mu waves, which can be observed by means of electroencephalography (EEG). Our study found increases in mirror neuron system activation with simultaneous imagining and observing a hand movement. These fi ndings can be applied to Brain Machine Interfaces. The EEG quantifi cation of the impact of imagination upon mu wave activity creates the potential for this apparatus to serve in a Brain Machine Interface, in which biofeedback can be provided to subjects being trained to develop their imaginative capacities. We developed a Support Vector Machine (SVM) that classifi es EEG information that will, in the future, serve to open and close an artifi cial hand. The capacity to imagine coupled with effective training holds the promise of a Brain Machine Interface that could be of therapeutic benefi t for various disorders

    This paper deals with the reception of “kyoyo” in Japanese or “culture” by the defi nition of Matthew Arnold. As to the history of the reception of kyoyo in Japan, we divide into the three periods: Meiji, Taisho,and Showa. In Meiji period, under the infl uence of Western standards on educational system in Japan, an ideal image of a person with culture was roughly shaped, but more broadly, the notion of “Shuyo” had already been prevailed among the common people. Even without cultural background, anyone was able to be an ideal person with Shuyo, which was attained by making much effort through daily life. In short, Shuyo was the notion connected with the self-discipline of common people In contrast with “Shuyo”, the original notion of kyoyo in Taisho era can be regarded as an elite accesary. In a few highly regarded high school in Japan, acquiring Kyoyo was the necessary parts for the elites, which had to be nurtured through the practice of reading of the classics. After the end of the World War II, Japan was forced to change the educational system especially by the infl uence of American one. It is said that general education, “kyoyo kyoiku” in Japanese, was introduced to the system of university education in Japan. However, it has been often criticized as a defect system owing to the lack of educational objectives or responsibilities in Japan. Through the above historical background, we try to illuminate the problem about the general education in National college of technology

    Validation of Extraction Methods of Marine Debris in the Ocean Using Satellite Remote Sensing

    The flow of marine debris in the ocean causes extensive damage to coastal environments. It is considered important to understand the flow of marine debris in the ocean for environmental research purposes. The small size of most marine debris in the ocean means that marine debris cannot be confirmed directly, even when a high-spatial-resolution satellite image is used. Thus, in order to extract candidate pixels containing possible marine debris, pixels with spectra that differ from those of the surrounding ocean and the wave crests were identified. As a first step towards monitoring marine debris, a method for identifying marine debris floating on the ocean was proposed that used a histogram showing the distance from the regression line of the scatter diagram of satellite spectral bands. In this paper, a new method using spectral angle mapper(SAM)in four or eight dimensional space corresponding to satellite spectral bands is proposed. And the validity of the method using SAM is also discussed

    Robot-mediated Indoor Exercise Promotion Program Which Has Some Amusement

    In areas where it snows a lot in winter, the elderly people cannot go out for exercise, so that they have a loss of motor ability and high risk of falling. The falling is one of the causes of bedridden state. In order to solve this issue, we develop a system which can facilitate indoor exercises for the elderly people. In this system, we use compact-size mobile robot equipped with camera and virtual reality game for the exercise motivation. In this paper, we introduce what types of device are combined in order to construct the exercise system

    Deterioration Characteristics of Bridges Fukui and Fukui Prefecture

    The bridge maintenance strategy has been established for all bridges with long spans of more than 15m in Fukui prefecture. However, the deterioration characteristics of bridges are simply expressed in linear equations with small number of inspection data of bridges in the strategy. In this study, the deterioration transfer curves of each member elements of bridges in Fukui city and Fukui prefecture are introduced by using the inspection data. The deterioration transfer curve are classified with rapid, standard and slow velocity deteriorations. The deterioration characteristics of bridges are respectively discussed for bridges in Fukui city and Fukui prefecture. Furthermore, the deterioration characteristics of bridges of salt damage, frost damage environments and ASR suspected are also discussed
