Effects of Thermal Pretreatment and High-Solids on Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge
This study examined the effects of thermal pretreatment of excess sludge and high-solids influent on the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The thermal pretreatment (130℃ and 1 hour) improved VS destruction and gas production by several percent, but color intensity of digested sludge was enhanced. The performance of anaerobic digesters were depressed by the increased concentration of influent sewage sludge, especially at TS 9-10% influent. The ammonia concentration of the digested sludge was not very high so that physical accessibility of microorganisms to sewage sludge appears to be responsible. This is supported by a batch test, in which the coagulant for sludge thickening delayed the gas production
Optimal Maintenance Strategy for Bridge Long Life Span Considering Practical Usefulness
In this study, a useful BMS is developed for practical bridge management. The life cycle cost for each bridge is calculated by assuming the repair works and cost, and using the deterioration transfer curves for slab, girder and abutment. The most economical repair plan is determined by comparing the life cycle costs for nine cases considering the annual budget limit. The effectiveness and practical usefulness of the system are illustrated by applying it to the bridge management of 2423 bridges in Fukui prefecture. It is clear that the proposed BMS can determine the most economical repair plan considering the repair of whole bridge system. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the BMS can determine the best annual budget considering the economy and safety as well as the most economical repair plan for each bridge
Location Measurement of Remotely Operated Vehicle in Rainwater Harvesting Tank Using Bluetooth Low Energy
In recent years, rainwater harvesting systems have drawn renewed attention from not only usage of natural resources but also flood mitigation under torrential rainfall in urban areas. To spread the systems in urban areas, it is necessary to consider cost-effective tank maintenance, such as how to check tank conditions frequently and how to maintain clean condition inside the tank. To do this, use of underwater robot is one of possible solutions. In this paper, we firstly review the current rainwater harvesting technologies. Then, we also explain the current underwater robots and their location measurement technologies. Finally, we demonstrate from our experiment with combination of OpenROV and Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE)that it is possible to measure location of underwater robot for cost-effective maintenance under a limited condition
Using Simplified Movement Analysis of Experienced Swimmers : a Practical Report Regarding Instruction in Diving Movements
Using local experienced swim teams, we conducted trials to improve upon diving movements by utilizing simplified movement analysis. In this paper, we report our results. We conducted the following process with 12 experienced swimmers in the Ishikawa Prefecture.
1. Instructor and researcher recorded videos to be used to analyze diving movements by using a single consumer-grade video camera
2. Instructor uploaded these videos to a shared folder on the cloud
3. Researchers then downloaded and analyzed the videos
4. Researchers input the angle of incidence and movement track of the center of gravity (i.e., at the waist) and performed reproduction processing; next, researchers uploaded the videos where the problems are input (i.e., analytical results) to the video distribution site
5. Finally, each athlete viewed the videos using their home computer and/or smartphones to understand problem areas to work on for their next practice
By following the procedure above, visual feedback was provided by analyzing the current situations and the problem areas athletes had with their own diving movements. By utilizing the cloud and the video distribution site and conveying information efficiently between researchers and athletes, we conclude that providing feedback motivated experienced swimmers to practice more and further enhance their athletic abilities
