In this paper, the analysis of the structure of the Genoese warship in the late Middle Ages, conducted through the study of some of the the main sources available – chronicle, legislative sources, accounting records – allows the author to verify the validity of some theoretical frameworks related to the application of the concept of sea power to the medieval Mediterranean and to propose further interpretative schemes. The present article analyzes the problems related to the military mobilization and the organization of the Genoese armies in battlefield. It brings to light the need for a systematic scrutiny of the abundant administrative documentation preserved in the documentary collection called Antico Comune of the Archivio di Stato di Genova and offers a solid theoretical background to carry out a new interpretation. With this aim, it proposes to critically review some of the prevailing theories managed in recent decades to explain the Mediterranean expansion of the city of Genoa. Specifically, it checks thoroughly the approaches that have considered the expansion a consequence of a long-term strategy focused on the control of the key points of the maritim route to the Levant. The author suggests the existence of diverse and not always coincident interests within the Genoese political society and the protagonist role of the private initiative in the endowment and the control of the republic armies from the thirteenth century. In such conditions, the effectiveness of the system was based on the development of elements capable of safeguarding the common interest. Among them, he emphasizes two main factors: a powerful system of recruitment, with which to assure the crew and crossbowmen; and a strict naval legislation, which would allow to regulate the characteristics of the boats built in the domains of the city and, therefore, susceptible of being put to its service in a warlike context.L’analisi della struttura della marina da guerra genovese nel tardo Medioevo, condotta attraverso lo studio di alcune tra le principali fonti a disposizione – cronachistiche, legislative, contabili – consente all’autore di verificare la validità di certi quadri teorici relativi all’applicazione del concetto di sea power al Mediterraneo medievale e di proporre ulteriori schemi interpretativi.

Title: Managing the Army, governing the State: the Italian military élite in national politics, 1882-1915 Título: Dirigir el ejército, gobernar el estado: la élite militar italiana en la política nacional, 1882-1915 [EN] Abstract: According to several contemporary witnesses, and many nowadays historians, one of the key instruments used by the Italian social and political élite of the 19th century to secure the national unifica- tion (and the monarchy as the leading institution of the newborn state) was the army. What few of them has noted, however, is that the army and the military who controlled it were more than an in- strument: they were an essential part of the Italian national élite, capable of influencing the nation- building process itself. The Italian army officers, and specifically the general staff ones, attended univer- sity-level military academies where social sciences were taught along with general history, human geog- raphy and foreign languages. They travelled the world and confronted themselves with fellow officers from different social, political and cultural contexts. They took part in politics and local administration, as well as in economical enterprises. Above all, they were well aware of the role the army was supposed to hold in the institutional and symbolic panorama of unified Italy and pre-war Europe. And they wrote about all of this. The research project is grounded on two main sources. On one hand, the quantitative analysis of the careers and the biographies of 250 general staff officers who attained specific roles of great responsibility and relative autonomy from 1882 to 1915. On the other hand, correspondence, diaries, unpublished memoirs found in several private and family archives – in other words, those unofficial, unseen writings that we think could be more telling than the formal ones in revealing the military personal beliefs and cultural affiliations and influences. Crossing the quantitative and qualitative outputs, we can explore in depth the influence of military in the conception of politics, education, nationalization processes or social relationships in a case study, the Italian one, that is either peculiar and well integrated in the wider belle époque European context.

Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries AD, the Lower Vistula valley represented a permeable and shifting frontier between Pomerelia (eastern Pomerania), which had been incorporated into the Polish Christian state by the end of the tenth century, and the territories of western Prussian tribes, who had resisted attempts at Christianization. Pomeranian colonization eventually began to falter in the latter decades of the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, most likely as a result of Prussian incursions, which saw the abandonment of sites across the borderland. Subsequently, the Teutonic Order and its allies led a protracted holy war against the Prussian tribes, which resulted in the conquest of the region and its incorporation into a theocratic state by the end of the thirteenth century. This was accompanied by a second wave of colonization, which resulted in the settlement pattern that is still visible in the landscape of north-central Poland today. However, not all colonies were destroyed or abandoned in between the two phases of colonization. The recently excavated site of Biała Góra, situated on the western side of the Forest of Sztum overlooking the River Nogat, represents a unique example of a transitional settlement that included both Pomeranian and Teutonic Order phases. The aim of this paper is to situate the site within its broader landscape context which can be characterized as a militarized frontier, where, from the later twelfth century and throughout much of the thirteenth century, political and economic expansion was combined with the ideology of Christian holy war and missionary activity. This paper considers how the colonists provisioned and sustained themselves in comparison to other sites within the region, and how Biała Góra may be tentatively linked to a documented but otherwise lost outpost in this volatile borderland.

One of the basic elements for achieving social cohesion in times of war is the creation of the image of an enemy, hated and feared, which justifies the policies of a government in such a turbulent situation. In Axis’ Europe, in the midst of a world-wide struggle, the focus was put on international communism, the true embodiment of evil according to the propagandists of that time. Organized by the Third Reich and its ideological machinery, since the late 1930s major public events were held against its great phobias: Jews, Freemasonry and Bolshevism. Through the creation of overwhelming photomontages and all kinds of audiovisual material, a series of stereotypes of the enemy were developed, which would reaffirm citizen support for the State\u27s cause, especially after the outbreak of the Second World War. In this article, through unpublished Spanish and French archival documentation, we will analyze the Spanish participation exhibition Le Bolshevisme contre l´Europe, held in Vichy\u27s France in 1942. By explicit desire of the French and German occupation authorities, the francoist regime was asked to show the dangers of communism, considering that this nation –according to their perspective– had been the first to defeat it. The remembrance of the Civil War would not only reaffirm the legitimacy of the new Spanish State but would also have a major propaganda component. For that reason, efforts were focused on recreating, before the whole world, the functioning of the "checas" during the Spanish Civil War. Through this study we will be able to delve into the efforts made by Francoism to ideologically contribute to the consolidation of the principles of the New Order, exposing at the same time the internal difficulties and the lack of economic resources that accompanied them.

This work focuses on a key period of British history, both obscure and difficult: the end of Roman Britain and the formation of different successor states, including the newly arrived Germanic peoples who would be a decisive factor in the subsequent development of the island. From the point of view of military history, the problems multiply, for the period begins in AD 406-411 with the remains of the imperial army still present and ends around AD 500 with a series of established kingdoms, both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon, heavily imbued with heroic culture and in an almost permanent state of war. We are talking about the “Dark Ages”, now commonly called Sub-Roman Britain. The personal clienteles of warriors took control of the situation at the mid of the Fifth-Century and the classic legions became something of the past. We will try to establish some historical guidelines to analyze these complicated phenomena, especially from the perspective of war history. This period saw as well the emergence of Arthur, another key figure of British history, still hotly debated today. Trying to avoid the much sterile polemic, we will try to trace some link between Roman warfare and the remains of the Imperial rule throughout this complicated period in order to show the state of the historical processes that framed the evolution of the Late Roman World to become the early medieval one. Hypothesis will focus in the military developments of the age and the transformation of the former Roman regular professional army into the so-called aristocratic and heroic warbands, paying attention to the possible Roman remains on the Arthurian warfare. The so-called “Age of Tyrants” and the “land Fertile on Tyrants” is treated too, with a brief scheme concerning the threats featuring in the Military Anarchy, the Third Century Crisis and the overall Barbarian onslaught as the catalyzers of the proclamation of tyrants in Britain.

This article proposes to reconstruct the relationship between the government of President Raúl Alfonsín (1983-1989) and the Argentine Navy during the so-called democratic transition, whose main axes were the revision of the recent past and human rights. During that period the political situation of the Navy was relatively stable. At least if we compare it with what happened with their comrades of the Army. Throughout his term, President Alfonsin maintained the same Naval Chief of Staff and promotions occurred in a normal way. There were moments of great tension but didn´t have media coverage and happened almost behind the scenes. In all cases was present the figure of Liutenant Alfredo Astiz. Minister of Defense Borrás was the first to realize that Astiz had become a double symbol that reflected the gap between the Society and the Armed Forces. To many he was a repressor, a murderer without compassion who had infiltrated Madres de Plaza de Mayo, had kidnapped two nuns, and also the coward who had surrendered without fighting in the Georgias Islands, during the Malvinas War. For his comrades in arms he was the officer who followed orders, a victim of the Navy that publicly exposed him after having assigned him intelligence missions, but also a witness case. If in 1984 his summons was the prelude to many others, in 1988 his early retirement by an administrative decision could mean the first of a long list. President Alfonsin couldn´t satisfy his desire to see Astiz out of the Navy. That is why he doesn´t hesitate to speak of “painful circumstances” and use the word “failure”. Moreover the Navy showed all united and in solidarity with officers, of any rank, prosecuted or detained, and hug in defending the officer who had become, for the Society, the most visible face of repression.
