An Analysis of The Effects of Multimedia Teaching on Student Achievement
Multimedia settings can be defined as digital settings in which elements with visual, audio or visual-audio characteristics that appeal to individuals auditory and visual senses are presented in a combined way. Such settings are employed in numerous fields including movies, advertisements, tourism, commerce and education. The aim of the study is to analyse the effects of social studies education based on multimedia setting on students academic achievement. The study was designed using the explanatory sequential design which is part of the mixed method. The major finding of the study is that social studies teaching based on the multimedia setting had much more positive effects on student achievement than traditional teaching, but this effects was not statistically significant. The qualitative findings suggested that the reason for it is related to crowded classroom size, high levels of students academical readiness and noise in the classrooms. It is possible to conclude that teaching based on multimedia setting has much more positive effects on academic achievement in contrast to traditional teaching and it makes topics to be learned much more understandable and learning environment much more fun
A Metaphoric Study for Classroom Teacher Candidates in Socio-Scientific Issues Based Environmental Education Class%253A Nuclear Power Plant Example
The purpose of this study is to determine the metaphors that the candidate teachers develop about the nuclear power plants in the socio-scientific issues based environmental education class and the justification of these metaphors. The study was constructed on the basis of a qualitative research model and phenomenological (phenomenology) pattern was used. The study was conducted during an academic semester in the environmental education course. The researcher presented to the classroom teacher candidate the positive and negative effects of the socio-scientific situations on the environment, human, development, economy, and health. It was ensured that teacher candidates were able to relate these issues to the subjects of environmental education course, assess the difficulties and discuss them with large group studies. A study for building the metaphors was conducted in the activity carried out for nuclear power plants as the last activity of the implementation process. The research was conducted with 197 classroom teacher candidates and the data were collected through a metaphor questionnaire prepared in a semi-structured form and the content analysis method was used in data analysis. The time period, when teacher candidates experience the metaphors more frequently, their age or they build the metaphors in the interaction with the environment they are living in and they have listed the metaphors as follows%253B falling in love, internet, getting married, using medication, gun, frenemies, using the phone, bomb, eating desserts, gambling and smoking. When the reasons why the classroom teacher candidates use the metaphors are reviewed, it has been determined that they basically create supportive, opponent and impartial reasons for the nuclear power plants. Nevertheless, the majority of class teacher candidates perceived as a socio-scientific issue towards nuclear power plants and recognized the contradictory circumstances and apprehended the positive and negative characteristics of nuclear power plants in the context of economic and environmental effects

The study was designed according to procedural model in relational screening method. The study was conducted with 443 2nd and 4th year pre-service teachers who were enrolled in Kafkas and Çukurova University Education Faculty, Pre-school Teaching Department and Classroom Teaching Department. Multiple regression analysis was performed for the analysis of the data collected using the Metacognition Scale, Self-regulated Learning Scale based on Zimmermans Model, Social Intelligence Scale, Lifelong Learning Trends Scale. Analysis results showed that total scores of the Lifelong Learning Trends Scale were significantly predicted by the Self-reflection subscale of Self-Regulated Learning Scale and by the Social Knowledge, Social Skill, Social Awareness subscales of the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale%253B motivation subscale was significantly predicted by the Forethought, Self-Reflection subscales of the Self-Regulation Scale, Social Knowledge, Social Skill subscales of the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale
What do the school directors want to change in their school buildings%253F An Evaluation of Physical Competences of Primary, Secondary and High School Buildings
In the study, a mixed research method was used combining quantitative and qualitative data. The study group consisted of 302 school directors and deputy directors working in different schools within Hatay Province of Turkey. A data collection tool, developed according to the official standards of state schools, was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data together. In the quantitative dimention, we concluded that school administrators think that the music and fine arts classrooms, worship sections, sport fields, science laboratories, computer and technology laboratories were highly insufficient. The qualitative results also supported these findings. The participants stated that they wanted to expand the sport areas by adding indoor sports hall, football, basketball, volleyball and swimming pools. The participants also expressed that the physical deficiencies hinder the lessons being efficient, especially the lack of school gym, workshop and laboratory%253B moreover they stated that this situation turns the courses into more theoretical base than the practice, which are delimited between four walls of the classrooms. However, we have also observed some inconsistent findings between quantitative and qualitative dimensions of the study, as the results related to classrooms, heating and insulation were observed to be inconsistent when the qualitative and quantitative dimensions were compared
Understanding the polygon with the eyes of blinds
This study investigated the concept images of blind students about the polygon concept. For this purpose, four open-ended questions were asked to five blind middle school students. During the interviews, geometric shapes were presented with raised-line materials and blind students were given opportunities to construct geometric shapes with magnetic sticks and micro-balls. Qualitative research techniques applied in grounded theory were used for analyzing documents pictures, which were taken from magnetic geometric shapes that blind students constructed, raised-line materials and researchers observation notes and interviews. As a result, it is determined that blind students have more than one concept image for the polygon concept. They scrutinized the polygon concept analytically not with a holistic perspective. They were often conflicted about triangle, rectangle, square, circle and circular region whether or not being a polygon. They also encountered with the difficulties associated with the combination of polygon sides endpoints consecutively
Self-leadership Strategies as the Predictor of Self-esteem and Life Satisfaction in University Students
Self-leadership is human resource that can be developed. It is self-influence through behavioral and cognitive strategies and can influence both self-esteem and life satisfaction. The present study aims to determine whether and to what degree self-leadership strategies used by university students predict their self-esteem and life satisfaction. The study, using relational survey model and quantitative paradigm, was conducted with 360 university students. The findings indicated that there were positive and significant correlations between the use of self-leadership strategies (behavior-focused strategies and constructive thought strategies) and self-esteem and life satisfaction. Of the strategies, behavior-focused strategies were found to be the strongest predictor of university students self-esteem and life satisfaction
The Impact of Biography-based Values Education on 4th Grade Elementary School Students%252339%253B Attitudes towards Tolerance Value
This study seeks to determine the impact of biography-based values education on 4th grade elementary school students attitudes towards tolerance value. Within the study, an experimental method with pre-test and post-test control group was used to find out the difference between attitudes towards tolerance value adopted by the students of the experimental group in which biography-based values education was practised and by the students of the control group in which it was not practised. In addition, in this study, which includes both quantitative and qualitative techniques, quantitative data were collected through tolerance attitude scale while qualitative data were collected through interview forms. All data collection tools were developed by researchers of the study. In this study, quantitative data were analysed through arithmetic average, frequency, independent samples t-test, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test, while descriptive analysis approach was given preference in the analysis of qualitative data. In this study, researchers drew upon biographies of Prophet Muhammad, Atatürk, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Hacı Bektaş Veli, Mevlâna and Yunus Emre. These biographies were presented with the tolerance value and in a manner and a format close to biographical fiction that brings in sub dimensions of the tolerance value including respect, toleration, harmony, flexibility, peace, equality, forgiveness, prejudice, modesty and understanding. In this study, it was determined that after the biography-based values education practice while there was a significant difference in favour of the experimental group between attitude points towards students tolerance value, there was no significant difference between attitude points of students depending on variables of gender, education and income level of parents. It was concluded from interviews made with teachers, parents and students that the biography-based values education turned out to be a successful practice that concretized the teaching process, catalysed the learning of values, made the teaching environment enjoyable and positively affected students attitudes towards tolerance values
Investigation of Tales in Turkish Textbooks in Terms of Conveying Values
The aim of this study is to examine the tales in Turkish textbooks in terms of the values they convey. In this study, organized according to qualitative research method, the data have been obtained by document examination which is one of the qualitative data collection tools. A total of 29 tales in Turkish textbooks of 3-8 grades in the 2017-2018 academic year, were examined. Content analysis of qualitative data analysis techniques was conducted to analyze the data. In the analysis of the data the coding reliability was made and all the tales were analyzed together by two researchers. The total frequency of the sub-values determined in the examined tales is 70. When the distribution of lower values to the main values determined by MEB (2017) is examined, it is seen that there are 17 lower values related to responsibility main value, 11 lower values related to friendship and respect main values and 7 lower values related to self-regulation main value. While there is only 1 lower value for patience main value, there is no lower value for patriotism main value. Transfer method of 70 sub-values in the tales becomes different. These transfers were mostly positive sample behavior (f %253D 31), negative sample behavior (f %253D 21) and direct transfer (f %253D 12). The least used transfer method in tales is indirect transfer (f %253D 1). Almost all of the most frequently encountered humility sub-value is conveyed through negative examples%253B industriousness sub-value is mostly conveyed through direct (word) transfer. Among the main values (deep values) that are intended to be given in the whole of the tales in Turkish textbooks, friendship and responsibility take place 3 times%253B confidence, perseverance, humility, sense of mission, cooperation and empathy take place 2 times%253B and the other values take place once. When sub-values obtained from investigating tales as a whole are examined in the context of main values, it is seen that there is no sub-value reflecting the main value of justice and patriotism, and therefore no tale text was encountered on that

Statistics Anxiety of Graduate Students
Commonly described by psychologists%253B anxiety is a psychological construct, as a state of apprehension, a vague fear that is only indirectly associated with an object (Scovel, 1991). A small amount of anxiety is believed to be needed for learners since it improves performance which is known as facilitating anxiety. Statistics anxiety is a feeling of anxiety when taking a statistics course or doing statistical analysis (Cruise, Cash, amp%253B Bolton, 1985). In general, statistics anxiety is a debilitating anxiety which negatively affect students performance. Statistics is one of the compulsory courses in most graduate programs. Students entering to these graduate programs especially in social sciences such as education, usually do not have any math and statistical background which creates a negative perception towards statistics related courses. These negative feelings and perceptions are thought to be affect their level of success. The aim of this study is, therefore, to determine the anxiety related views of graduate students towards statistics course. Qualitative content analysis with purposeful sampling is used in the study. To this end, the research data were obtained with the help of 26 graduate students studying in Department of Educational Sciences at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University in the academic years of 2017-2018. A semi-structured interview form was used for data collection which aims to determine the anxiety related views of graduate students. Analysis of the results revealed five themes of statistics anxiety%253B (1) importance of the course, (2) math skills, (3) computer skills, (4) exam stress, and (5) foreign language skills. It can be concluded that defining and understanding the source of anxiety related behaviors will help to conduct more effective and efficient statistics courses
