    The Effect of Chemistry Activities Applied in Science Camp on Secondary School Students

    The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of chemistry activities applied in summer science camp on secondary school students. Action research was used in the study as the method. The sample of the study consists of 48 7th grade students who study at elementary school in Çayeli district of Rize province, in Turkey. Each week 24 students participated in the camp, which lasted two weeks. The activities that were carried out are%253B The Gases in the Air, Sad Tears of the Sky, Recycling, Lets Use Soap and Be Clean, Soap Foam Fountain. During the activities, Chemistry Science Interview Form including four open-ended questions related to chemistry was applied to the students before and after the activities in the camp. Besides, Reflective Journals were used to reveal the participants thoughts about the chemistry activities that were applied in the camp. Content analysis was used in analyzing the data collection tools. It was found out that students can use more conceptions and statements on chemistry, and they can associate them with daily life in a better way after the science camp. Also, the findings indicate that chemistry activities which were carried out within the scope of the project contribute to chemistry, and to the students interest in this profession

    The Opinions of University Graduate Working Mothers Who Have 36-60-Months-Old Children about the Quality of the Time Spent with Their Children%253A A Phenomenological Analysis

    The main aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of university graduate working mothers who have 36-60 months-old children of the quality of the time spent with their children. In the study, the phenomenology design was used among qualitative research techniques. The study group consisted of 32 mothers selected by using a maximum variation sampling method. The data of the study were collected using the semi-structured interview technique, and the data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis technique. The majority of the mothers who participated in the interview described the quality time spent between the mother and child as the time which is spent with activities that the mother and child enjoy equally. The majority of the mothers stated that they believe that it is necessary to spend quality time with their children since it affects mother-child communication positively, they want to participate in the training during which they can learn activities appropriate to different age ranges and different areas of development with their children, they play games with their children to spend quality time, and they believe that spending quality time contributes to mother-child communication. Half of the mothers stated that the process was turned into quality time by including the child in all responsibilities at home, while the other half stated that no quality time could be spent with the child while fulfilling the responsibilities at home. The mothers emphasized that the periods that can be spent in a quality way are weekends and annual leave periods and stated that the main factor which prevents spending the quality time is the intensity of working hours. It is thought that organizing practical training seminars that will enable mothers to learn how to make the time spent with their children more qualified will contribute to mothers

    The Effect of Self-Regulation Based Strategic Reading Education on Comprehension, Motivation, and Self-Regulation Skills

    The changes occurred in science and technology affect the content of education directly. In alignment with this change, the upbringing of students from an early age to be able to adapt and improve in alignment with the changing life conditions, to take learning responsibilities, to solve problems, to be able to think critically, to be entrepreneurial and to have communication skills is directly realted to models and methods used in their learning environments. With self-regulated education that emerged in alignment with this perspective, students follow a path that is cognitively, motivationally and behaviorally active during their education. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of self-regulation based strategic reading on the comprehension, reading motivation and self-regulation skills of 5th grade students. The study was conducted in two middle schools that are in the middle level socioeconomically in the city of Aksaray. An experimental model with pre-test and post-test control group was used in the study. Paired groups were assigned to expeiment and control groups randomly in alignment with the research design. In the test group, a program geared towards improving self-regulation based reading skills was used while the current education program is used in the control group. Reading comprehension scale, motivation and learning strategies scale, reading motivation scale, and reading strategies scale were used as data collection instruments. The findings showed that self-regulation based strategic reading education has an effect on reading comprehension, motivation and self-regulation skills

    Development of Creative Thinking Skills of Students Through Journal Writing

    This research was conducted in the fourth grade of a private primary school in the province of Gaziantep in the 2018-2019 academic year to provide students with creative thinking skills. This study was carried out as a qualitative case study. 23 students participated in the program. With a two-month study, students were given 23 journal writing topics to develop their creative thinking skills. The students wrote their journals in the school for 5-10 minutes at the beginning of the lessons. At the end of the program students and teachers were asked to write their opinions in the interview form. The data were analyzed by NVIVO 12 for Mac. According to the findings, creative thinking and writing activities have a positive effect on students%252339%253B development of creative thinking skills. Majority of the students think the program was entertaining while it is seen that female students are more willing than male students

    Evaluating the Views of Turkish Teacher Candidates in Improving the Quality of Assessment and Evaluation Activities Used in Teaching Turkish to Foreigners

    The assessment methods used in language teaching have an important role in achieving the targeted gains. The assessment methods used should be effective in determining both the general situation of the class and individual qualifications. In this case, constructivist, innovative, student-centered and so on. It is predicted that the use of assessment and evaluation methods will be successful. In this research, the opinions of Turkish teacher candidates about improving the quality of assessment and evaluation methods used in teaching Turkish to foreigners were examined. The study group of the study consisted of the students of Faculty of Education Turkish Education Department. A total of 25 Turkish teacher candidates participated in the study. In the study, standardized open-ended interview form was used to obtain the data. In the evaluation of the data, content analysis was preferred. During the research process, the data obtained from the interview forms were evaluated as question headings. In the evaluation, the question-topic order in the form was followed. In the analysis phase of each question, subject titles were determined based on the opinions of teacher candidates. As a result of the research, it was found that the teachers candidates generally thought that the use of constructivist, student-centered assessment methods would be effective in teaching Turkish to foreigners

    The Relationship between Solution-Focused School Leadership and Organizational Cynicism, Organizational Commitment and Teachers%252339%253B Job Satisfaction

    The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between solution-focused school leadership and organizational cynicism, organizational commitment and teachers job satisfaction. This study was designed in correlational survey model. The sample group was 246 teachers working in different schools. The sample group was determined by using cluster random sampling method. Data were collected via the four scales%253A Solution-Focused School Leadership Scale, Organizational Cynicism Scale, Organizational Commitment Scale, and short form of the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. The results show that the teachers perceive a high level solution-focused leadership in the schools. The results also show that teachers have low level organizational cynicism, but high level organizational commitment and job satisfaction. It was found a high level statically significant negative correlations between the teachers organizational cynicism and school principals solution-focused leadership according to multiple regression analysis results. In addition, a high level statically significant positive correlations were found between the teachers organizational commitment and school principals solution-focused leadership. Moreover, a high level statically significant positive correlations were found between the teachers job satisfaction and school principals solution-focused leadership. The results also show that solution-focused leadership scores and organizational commitment scores differ statistically in favor of female teachers

    Analysis of Scientific Studies on Item Response Theory by Bibliometric Analysis Method

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the studies, which include Item Response Theory among the keywords, available in the Web of Science database between 1980-2018 through bibliometric analysis method. A total of 1,367 academic works has been analyzed. The authors, journals and countries having the highest number of studies in the field and their interrelations on the network in terms of collaboration have been determined through common citation analysis performed using Citespace II software. In addition, a word analysis was also conducted to determine most frequently used concepts in the field. As a result of the study it was found that the authors that have made the biggest contribution to the field are De Ayala, Embretson, Reckase, Reise and Chalmers%253B in addition, the countries making the biggest contribution are respectively US, Netherland, Canada, Spain and China. The number of citations that US got, which is the country that received the highest number of citations with 687 citations, is 7 times higher than Netherland, which is the second most cited country. Moreover, it was found that the journals that were mostly cited are respectively Psychometrika, Appl Psych Measurement, Item Response Theory, J Edu Measurement and Educ Psychol Measurement. As a result of the word analysis based on most repeated words, which was performed for the purpose of determining most popular subjects on the field, it was found that most frequently used words are item response theory, classical test theory, model, validation, reliability, validity and Rasch mode

    Professional Knowledge Courses in Teacher Education%253A Lecturer and Student Views (The Case of Gazi Education Faculty)

    Professional knowledge courses (PKC) at education faculties are designed to educate high quality teachers. This study aims to examine the views of education faculty lecturers, graduates and senior year students about the place and implementation of PKC in teacher education. The study group of the qualitative study included lecturers (20), senior year (22) and graduate (12) students who agreed to take part in the study. Data were collected by using semi structured interview forms. Focus group interviews of 30-45 minutes were held with individual lecturers and graduates, and with groups of 3-5 senior year students. For data analysis, a list of codes was made. Relavant codes were brought together for thematic coding. Analyses of lecturer and student views on PKC revealed the following themes%253A General perceptions, content, implementation, quality of lecturers, measurement and evaluation in PKC, teaching practice, educational environments, educational system - policies, and recommendations. The study concludes with teacher education recommendations based on the findings

    Turkish Teachers Opinions about the Use of Drama Method

    The purpose of the current study is to determine how Turkish teachers use the drama method in their classes and what difficulties%252Fproblems they experience during their implementations of the drama method. This is a qualitative study. The study employed the case study design. The study group of the current research is comprised of 17 Turkish teachers working in the city of Kars. The participating teachers were selected by using the maximum variation sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods. In the current study, a semi-structured interview form was used as the data collection tool. The collected data were analyzed by means of the content analysis method. The findings of the current study have revealed that the participating teachers mainly define drama as acting out and empathy development. They use the drama method most in the warm-up and wrap-up sections of the lesson, while studying texts including four basic language skills and didactic and critical texts, theatrical texts, and tales, folktales and fables. The drama method is believed to make its greatest contribution to the development of the skill of establishing empathy and the most important difficulty encountered is related to preparedness of students. The suggestion made by most of the teachers is to make drama a separate course

    Exploring Pre-Service Teachers Pedagogical Beliefs in Primary Education

    Considerable research emphasized that pre-service teachers enter teacher education programs with beliefs about teaching and learning and relate their beliefs to the experiences they gained through their previous studies. Then, their pre-existed beliefs have been shaped through the teacher education. Therefore, understanding pre-service teachers pedagogical beliefs plays an important role in their professional development. The purpose of this research is to understand pre-service teachers pedagogical beliefs in primary education in Turkey. Pedagogical Beliefs Scale developed by the author is used in order to understand their pedagogical beliefs. Scale development included data from 553 pre-service teachers. To understand primary pre-service teachers%252339%253B pedagogical beliefs, data gathered from 310 primary pre-service teachers. Findings revealed that majority of the pre-service teachers hold constructivist beliefs. Although there is no statistically significant difference among the primary pre-service teachers regarding the year they enrolled, statistically significant difference found in favour of female pre-service teachers. Findings of this research revealed that pre-service teachers hold compatible pedagogical beliefs with the demands of the primary curriculum in Turkey
