Investigation of the Relationship Between the Empathic Tendency Skills and Problem Solving Skills of Turkish Primary School Students
The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between empathy tendency skills and problem solving skills of 10 year old Turkish primary school students. At the same time, it is aimed to find out whether these students %252339%253Bempathy level and problem solving ability differ according to the student%252339%253Bs gender, number of siblings, socioeconomic level, parental age and parents%252339%253B educational status. The study sample constitutes 418 fourth grade students from three primary schools in the city of Izmir, Turkey. In the study, the KA-SI Empathy Tendency Scale-Child Form developed by Kaya and Siyez (2010) and Problem Solving Inventory is developed by Serin, Bulut-Serin, Saygılı (2010). Independent Groups t Test, One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Kruksal Wallis H Test%253B Tukey and Mann Whitney U Test in determining which groups differ%253B Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis was applied to determine the relationship between groups. The findings of the study showed that there is a positive directional medium-strong relationship between the empathy score of the students and the confidence in problem solving skills and problem solving scores. There is a very weak positive relationship between empathy and avoidance score. It is thought that the results obtained in the research can contribute to the programs that will be prepared in order to develop empathy and problem solving skills in children
A Study of the Quality of Feedback Via the Google Classroom-mediated-Anonymous Online Peer Feedback Activity in a Thai EFL Writing Classroom
The current study investigated the quality of feedback produced via anonymous online peer feedback activity in a Thai EFL writing classroom. It also explored how the students perceived the anonymous online peer feedback activity. Peer feedback tasks, questionnaires, and an interview were used to collect the information. The results from the peer feedback tasks showed that the quality of peer feedback significantly improved. The results from the questionnaires showed that the students agreed that the online peer feedback activity helped them to improve their writing although there were some problems that should be improved. The follow-up interview revealed that the anonymity of the writers or the feedback givers would not affect how most students would react to the writings or feedbacks. It could be noted from the study that sufficient training must be provided before implementing the anonymous online peer feedback activity. The findings provide new evidence for scholars and instructors who are interested in implementing an anonymous online peer feedback in a Thai classroom
Students%252339%253B Views on the Ethnobotany-Based Nature Education Program and Their Attitudes towards the Plant
The aim of this research is to determine Students%252339%253B Views on the ethnobotany-Based Nature Education Program and the impact this program makes on their attitudes towards the plant. The research was conducted on 7th-grade students in a state school in İstanbul. 15 ethnobotany based activities were performed throughout Nature Education. The data collection tools were%253A an activity evaluation form composed of open-ended questions and conducted at the end of each activity, a Plant Attitude Questionnaire conducted both before and after the implementation and semi-structured student interviews (n%253D5) performed at the end of the implementation. The answers students gave on the evaluation form and in interviews were analyzed qualitatively in order to determine their views on the activities. The themes formed as a result of data analysis were demonstrated within the tables. The data collected through the Plant Attitude Questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively. At the end of the research, it was found out that most of the students have positive views on ethnobotanic based activities. Moreover, it was revealed that students scores of the attitudes towards the plant demonstrated a meaningful change throughout the study. The data collected with the help of the research were discussed and some suggestions were presented
Examination of Social Activity Understanding from the Viewpoint of School Administrators
The purpose of this study is to examine the social activities in Turkish Education System from the viewpoint of the school administrators. Qualitative method and case study design were conducted in the study. The sample of the study is composed of 10 school administrators, who were selected through convenience sampling and snowball sampling. Data were collected through the semi-structured interview form, observations, and document analysis. Descriptive analysis technique was used to analyze the data. According to the findings of the research, the participants evaluated the social activity as the activities that affect the environment and the students and are desired to affect them and stated that all the stakeholders take on the responsibility for this purpose. The main factor in the quantitative and qualitative differentiation of social activities in schools is the perspective of the school staff who direct and manage these activities. Social activities regulations are generally simple in terms of language and have a structure that facilitates work. Based on the results obtained, it can be suggested to make a regulation that brings a separate lesson time to the club work in the legislation and to carry out the studies that examine the subject from the perspective of the other stakeholders who contribute to education
Examining the Print Script Letters Shapes Taught in Primary Scholls in Turkey
The aim of this study is to examine the basic vertical letters with the opinions of the primary school teachers. This research has been done by phenomenology method which is one of the qualitative research methods. Critical sampling and appropriate sampling methods were used in determining the participants. The participants of the study consisted of 111 classroom teachers working in primary schools in Yozgat city center. In the determination of the participants, the service life as a criterion has been determined as at least 10 years. Semi-structured interview form was used as data collection tool. The researcher has prepared a semi-structured interview form called vertical basic writing letters writing form. Data were collected in November 2018. 111 class teachers were interviewed with semi-structured interview form. Two types of analysis technique were used for data analysis. Frequency (f) and percentage (%25) were used for quantitative data analysis. Content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. As a result of sdudy, 89%25 of the teachers think that the capital letter A is appropriate. It is seen that 11%25 did not approve of the big letter A. The eligibility for capital letter I is 96%25. Eligibility for capital letter J is 84%25. The eligibility rate for all other capital letters is 100%25. The conformity rate of lowercase letters after capital letters was examined. It is seen that the rate of conformity of the lowercase letter is 97%25. Eligibility of small letter f is 62%25. The rate of compliance with the letter l (lemon) is 65%25. Conformity rate of small t is 81%25. The compliance rate of all other lowercase letters is 100%25
Analyze of the Science and Technology Course TEOG Questions based on the Revised Bloom Taxonomy and their Relation between the Learning Outcomes of the Curriculum
Students who are getting education in our country are subject to various exams in order to be placed in a higher education. Since 2013-2014 academic year, Transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education (TEOG) exam has started to be applied for secondary education. TEOG exam questions are prepared in such a way to include teaching program achievements%252Flearning outcomes published by the Ministry of National Education. In this study, the relations between the levels of the TEOG exam science and technology course questions and the 8th class achievements of the Science and Technology course curriculum in the renewed Bloom taxonomy were examined. In the research, data were subjected to descriptive analysis using the document analysis method. A total of 120 Science and Technology questions of the TEOG exams held between 2013 and 2016 were included in the study but 118 of the questions were analyzed since two of the questions were canceled. At the end of the research, it was determined that 58 questions from the Science and Technology course of Semester I included in the TEOG exam were the questions related to the 31 learning outcomes of the total of 34 outcomes included in the examination program. It was observed that 60 questions from the Science and Technology course of Semester II were related to the 42 learning outcomes of the total of 96 outcomes included in the program. In addition, it was also determined that there was no question in TEOG related to some of the course units
The Role of Metacognitive Awareness and Motivation of Prospective Primary School Teachers in Predicting Their Academic Achievement in the lsquo%253BScience and Technology Laboratory Applications Course
The present study aims to investigate the predictive effects of metacognitive awareness of prospective primary school teachers and their motivation to learn science subjects on their academic achievement in the lsquo%253BScience and Technology Laboratory Applications course. A total of 108 (72 females, 36 males) prospective primary school teachers participated in the study. The sample of the study consists of second-grade prospective primary school teachers attending the lsquo%253BPrimary School Teaching department of a public university in the academic year of 2017-2018. The study was carried out with relational screening model, one of the descriptive research methods. As the data collection tools, metacognitive awareness scale, motivation scale for science learning, and the average grades of the prospective teachers from the science course were used. To determine the relationship between the prospective primary school teachers academic achievements in their science courses and their metacognitive awareness and motivation for science learning, the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient was used. Besides, multiple regression analysis was used to determine the extent to which the sub-factors of metacognitive awareness and motivation of prospective teachers accounted for the variance in their academic achievement. The study concludes the importance of the sub-factors predicting academic achievement as follows%253A knowledge of cognition, the motivation for research, the motivation for participation, the motivation for collaborative work, and motivation for performance. Furthermore, it has been determined that all factors accounted for 37%25 of the variance on academic achievement
Mathematics self-efficacy beliefs and sources of self-efficacy%253A A Descriptive Study with two Elementary School Students
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mathematics self-efficacy beliefs and sources of self-efficacy in two elementary school students whose mathematics achievement are at different levels. Case study design, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. Two 4th grade elementary school students have participated in the study, one with high mathematics achievement and the other with low mathematics achievement. Participants have been selected according to purposive sampling method. Mathematics achievement of the students have been determined through their mathematics scores and the information obtained from their teachers. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with the students. Descriptive analysis was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research it was found that students mathematics achievement is parallel to their mathematics self-efficacy beliefs. It was found that the student, whose mathematics achievement is high, has positive experiences concerning the sources of self-efficacy, whereas the student, whose mathematics achievement is low, mostly encounters negative experiences
Investigation of Science Project Performances of Gifted and Talented Students
The purpose of the study is to analyze gifted and talented students project performances and views about them. In the study, explanatory sequential design, which is one of the mixed method research designs, was applied. In the quantitative phase of the study, project performances of the students were identified, while, in the qualitative phase, their views on their performances were determined. The study group consisted of the students who were enrolled in the Support Program at a Science and Arts Center during the 2017-2018 education year. According to quantitative findings, during the project preparation process, the students exhibit fairly good performance in producing ideas from science-related life, producing ideas for their needs and creating hypothesis about the problem. In qualitative findings, the students are seen to have no difficulty in producing ideas, as a result of which they can immediately produce ideas on their own. As regards to the project process and project content, they are observed to show fairly good performance in self-deciding on the sources and materials to be used for testing the hypothesis and sharing the research findings with the teacher and class while showing satisfactory performance in testing the hypothesis. The students stated that they did research, tested hypothesis and made inferences for hypothesis testing. They performed fairly good in using fluent and clear language in presentation, making the presentation within the given time and making eye contact with the audience. They expressed their opinion that they made an effective presentation as well as they were not satisfied with the presentation
Elimination of Writing Difficulty in Primary School%253A An Action Research
The aim of this study is to develop applications for the elimination of writing difficulties of primary school second year students. For this purpose, the following questions will be answered%253A What is the contribution of letter writing practices to the elimination of writing difficulties%253F, How does the practice of word writing contribute to the elimination of writing difficulties%253F, How does the practice of sentence writing contribute to the elimination of writing difficulties%253F, What is the contribution of text writing practices to the elimination of writing difficulties%253F, What is the persistence of the applications to eliminate writing difficulties%253F In this research, qualitative model and action research design were used. The participants of this research were consisted of 6 students who were found to have writing problems among the second grade students. In the study, Repeated Dictation and Motivation Practices were used to eliminate the writing difficulties of the participants. Multidimensional Legibility Scale was used for data collection tool before and after the applications. When the findings of the study are taken into consideration, there is a positive increase in the elimination of the writing difficulties of the participants. It can be said that the Repeated Dictation and Motivation Practices applied in the study were successful. The practice of dictation which is used in practice is carried out repeatedly in terms of letters, words, sentences and text, and the contribution of the study group to the elimination of writing difficulties is significant. We can say that the motivation studies conducted during the research support the elimination ofthe writing difficulties of the students. One-to-one interviews with the students, motivating them continuously and receiving family support are also important factors for success
