    Get PDF
The study proposes hybrid analog/digital transmission format scheme which integrated optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) and polarization multiplexing technique in free space optics (FSO) transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmits as the analog format and (on-off keying) OOK transmits as digital format in the study, respectively. In the proposed hybrid OCDMA system, it has high-speed transmission, signal security and low cost…etc. The multiple access interference (MAI) can be efficiently eliminated by using the balanced detection scheme at the receive end

Experimental Study of the Crack Control of Concrete by Self-healing of Synthetic Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites Synthetic Fiber

    Get PDF
In this study, it is possible to disperse effectively cracked using synthetic fiber, an examination of the most suitable self-healing conditions was performed on the above crack width 0.1mm. As a result, effective crack dispersion using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with polar OH- groups, as well as improved self-healing for cracks that are larger than 0.1 mm in width, posing concerns of CO2 gas and Cl- penetration, were observed. Also, CO32- reacts with Ca2+ in the concrete crack, resulting in the precipitation of a carbonate compound, CaCO3. Based on this, it is deemed possible for the recovery of effective watertightness to be made from cracks that are larger than 0.1 mm in width. In addition, it was determined that, as for the most suitable self-healing conditions in the inside and surface of the cracks, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) solution with CO2 micro-bubble was more effective in promoting the self-healing capability than water with CO2 micro-bubble

Mitigating Initialization Bias in Transportation Modeling Applications

    Get PDF
Traffic simulation model is a useful tool to evaluate real world transportation solutions in a risk free environment. Traffic simulation model requires some form of initialization before their outputs can be considered meaningful. Models are typically initialized in a particular, often “empty” state and therefore must be “warmed-up” for an unknown amount of simulation time before reaching a “quasi-steady-state” representative of the systems’ performance. The portion of the output series influenced by the arbitrary initialization is referred to as the initial transient and is a widely recognized problem in other areas, but less emphasized in the transportation application. After reviewing methods of accounting for the initial transient bias, this paper selects and evaluates three techniques; two popular methods from the general simulation field, Welch’s and MSER method, and one from the current state of the practice in the transportation application, Volume Balancing. VISSIM models were created to compare the selected methods. After presenting the results of each method, advantages and criticisms of each are discussed as well as issues that arose during the implementation. It is hoped that this paper informs the current practice in transportation application as to how to account for the initial transient in order to continue facilitating meaningful and reliable results

Spatial Analysis of Subway Ridership: Rainfall and Ridership

    Get PDF
In-vehicle congestion of the urban railway system is the most important indicator to reflect the operation state of the urban railway. To provide the good service quality of urban railway, the crowdedness of the urban railway should be managed appropriately. The weather is one of the critical factors for the crowdedness. That is because even though the crowdedness of the urban railway is the same, passengers feel more uncomfortable in rainy weather condition. Indeed if specific sections and stations suddenly are concentrated excessive demand, it will lead far more serious problem. Therefore, this study analysis the relationship between the number of urban railway passenger and rainfall intensity in Seoul metropolitan subway system and then conducts the spatial analysis to deduct passenger demand patterns. This study is expected to be useful base study in order to manage the congestion at the urban railway station effectively by considering the different rainfall intensity

    Get PDF
Patent commercialization is an important issue to most country, for only 0.3 percent of patent have commercialized in the world. Researchers try hard to enhance the rate of patent commercialization. This paper focus on innovation of organization and management to enhance the rate of patent commercialization. Which is based on team work and plan to promote step by step, for most patent owner develop patent but do not equally put effort on patent commercialization, and that is waste precious time and resource. This research directly analysis government published patent secondary data and the other part is questionnaires survey to patentees, with which to find best way of patent commercialization

Tubular Steel Arch Stabilized by Textile Membranes

    Get PDF
Tubular steel arch supporting textile membrane roofing is investigated experimentally and numerically. The stabilization effects of the textile membrane on in-plane and out-of-plane behavior of the arch is of primary interest. First a model of a large membrane structure tested in laboratory is described. Prestressed membranes of PVC coated polyester fabric Ferrari® Précontraint 702S were used as a currently standard and excellent material. The test arrangement, loading and resulting load/deflection values are presented. The supporting structure consisted of two steel arch tubes, outer at edge of the membrane and inner supporting interior of the membrane roofing. The stability and strength behavior of the inner tube under both symmetrical and asymmetrical loading was monitored and is shown in some details. Second the SOFiSTiK software was employed to analyze the structural behavior in 3D, using geometrically nonlinear analysis with imperfections (GNIA). The numerical analysis, FE mesh sensitivity, the membrane prestressing and common boundary conditions are validated by test results. Finally a parametrical study concerning stability of mid arch with various geometries in a membrane structure with several supporting arches is presented, with recommendations for a practical design

Interference Aware Real-Time Flows Scheduling in Cluster Based Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
For the real-time scheduling in wireless sensor networks, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) under cluster architecture is usually considered as reasonable as well as scalable approach. Under this architecture, several type of inferences should be taken into account to allocate time slot. For this goal, we have already proposed a new real-time scheduling algorithm. But, it has several assumptions and constraints so their deployment is limited to some specific real scenarios. In this paper, we additionally concern the interference of a node which belongs to two clusters concurrently. Token based scheduling algorithm between two cluster heads is proposed to solve this problem. Token is given to each cluster head consequently so order of slot allocation is achieved automatically. Finally, simulation results are given to prove that more flows are delivered within the deadline than previous work due to avoidance of inter-cluster interference in efficient way

Structural Behaviour of Precast Reinforced Concrete Frames on a Non-Engineered Building Subjected to Lateral Loads

    Get PDF
Past earthquakes in Indonesia have caused loss of life and major damage to buildings and infrastructure. Most of the damage was experienced on non-engineered buildings, which were conventionally built with less consideration of earthquake resistant design. In this research, a precast system was introduced for non-engineered building structures to connect their practical beams and columns as a reinforced concrete frame. This paper presents experimental tests on precast reinforced concrete frames with and without infill masonry walls using local materials. All undamaged and repaired specimens were set up with the same loading arrangements where lateral loads were gradually applied to one side of the beam column joint until the ultimate load was reached. Simple retrofitting and strengthening techniques were applied to the damaged specimens were conducted. The results were compared based on the experimental tests, and showed that retrofitted and strengthened specimens significantly increased their strength, stiffness, and displacement ductility to improve the structural behaviour of non-engineered building structures

Influence of Charge Shape and Orientation on the Response of Steel-Concrete Composite Panels

    Get PDF
Blast design codes usually generalize the shape of the charge as spherical or hemispherical. However, it was found that the blast overpressure of cylindrical charges differ greatly when compared with relevant analytical results generated with the charges assumed to be spherical. The objective is to use fully coupled 3D multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (MMALE) modelling technique in LS Dyna software to simulate the cylindrical charge blast loading. Comparison of spherical and cylindrical charge blast simulation was carried out to show the influence on peak overpressure and total impulse. Two steel-concrete composite specimens were subjected to blast testing under cylinder charges for benchmarking against numerical results. It was found that top detonated, vertical cylinder charge could give much higher blast loading compared to horizontal cylinder charge. The MMALE simulation could generate the pressure loading of various charge shape and orientation to be used for predicting the response of the composite panel

Fire Resistant Study for Long Span Beams Made of FR 490 Steels

    Get PDF
Building could be severely influenced by fire and it can be demolished so that the major structural elements such as columns and beams required to be coated by fire protection materials according to each condition. Especially, a steel framed building regarded as a weaken structures when the building is engulfed with a severe fire condition. Therefore, the fire resistant steel (FR 490) has been developed to improve the structural properties of an ordinary structural steels at high temperature. Generally, the fire resistance of structural beam built with a structural steel can be measured by horizontal furnace using a standard testing method by each nation’s standard. However, the real length of the beam showed the tendency longer than that of the horizontal furnace. Therefore, it is considered more important to know the real fire resistant performance of structural beams. In this paper, to evaluate the fire resistant performance of long span beams made of the FR 490, the fire engineering method is done using not only materials properties at high temperatures but a heat transfer, a stress theory. The results showed that as the length of beams are longer, the maximum load bearing capacities at high temperatures are lower and the deflections are increased
