    Intelligent Networks Data Fusion Web-based Services for Ad-hoc Integrated WSNs-RFID

    The use of variety of data fusion tools and techniques for big data processing poses the problem of the data and information integration called data fusion having objectives which can differ from one application to another. The design of network data fusion systems aimed at meeting these objectives; need to take into account of the necessary synergy that can result from distributed data processing within the data networks and data centres, involving increased computation and communication. This papers reports on how this processing distribution is functionally structured as configurable integrated web-based support services, in the context of an ad-hoc wireless sensor network used for sensing and tracking, in the context of distributed detection based on complete observations to support real rime decision making. The interrelated functional and hardware RFID-WSN integration is an essential aspect of the data fusion framework that focuses on multi-sensor collaboration as an innovative approach to extend the heterogeneity of the devices and sensor nodes of ad-hoc networks generating a huge amount of heterogeneous soft and hard raw data. The deployment and configuration of these networks require data fusion processing that includes network and service management and enhances the performance and reliability of networks data fusion support systems providing intelligent capabilities for real-time control access and fire detection

    Benefit Analysis of Emergency Standby System Promoted to Cogeneration System

    Benefit analysis of emergency standby system combined with absorption chiller promoted to cogeneration system is introduced. Economic evaluations of such upgraded projects play a major part in the decisions made by investors. Time-of-use rate structure, fuel cost and system constraints are taken into account in the evaluation. Therefore, the problem is formulated as a mixed-integer programming problem. Using two-stage methodology and modified mixed-integer programming technique, a novel algorithm is developed and introduced here to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. The net present value (NPV) method is used to evaluate the annual benefits and years of payback for the cogeneration system. The results indicate that upgrading standby generators to cogeneration systems is profitable and should be encouraged, especially for those utilities with insufficient spinning reserves, and moreover, for those having difficulty constructing new power plants

    An Analysis of Managing Sustainable Competitiveness for Semiconductor Manufacturers

    Innovative capability is considered inevitable for firms to sustain their competitiveness. In the recent rapidly changing global competition environment, the traditional integrated device manufacturer (IDM) model in semiconductor industry is facing the limitation of sustaining its profitability and competitiveness. IDM’s focusing both chip design and manufacturing for various application segments disperse its resources of innovating sustainable competiveness. This study develops an analysis framework with incorporating data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to measure the efficiency through proper input and output variables setting. This framework aims at providing guidelines for developing firm’s business and technology strategies. We conducted a DEA analysis by collecting financial data from twenty-six leading semiconductor manufacturing companies, including twenty IDMs and six foundries. The results reveal that the foundry companies have higher competitive efficiency than those of IDMs. The empirical analysis suggests that adopting the asset-light business model may provide IDMs a better resource allocation and help the increase of relative efficiency scores

    Applications of Differential CDMA Schemes and Control Technology for Distribution Substations

    This paper presents an approach to achieve monitoring and control of distribution systems in a distribution substation using power-line communication (PLC) combined with Hadamard code. Four different techniques, i.e., binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16-quadrature amplitude modulator (QAM) and 64-QAM in code division multiple access (CDMA), are employed. With spreading-spectrum modulation and demodulation in the studied PLC system, the proposed approach can achieve reliable high-speed information transmission through power lines. With Hadamard code, the signals corresponding to different relays are orthogonal to each other and the interference among them can be reduced. The proposed approach has the advantages of high-speed detection, bi-direction communication, reading and backup data, control and turn-off functions, displaying the real-time system information, etc. When 100 kHz is used as the carrier frequency for 256 relays under power-line noise below 14 dB, the simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) is less than 10-5 . The proposed scheme can be applied to the smart-grid distribution substation of the studied distribution systems

    An Efficient Method for Automatic Generation of Linearly Independent Paths in White-box Testing

    Testing is the one of most significant quality assurance measures for software. It has been shown that the software testing is one of the most critical and important phases in the life cycle of software engineering. In general, software testing takes around 40-60% of the effort, time and cost. Structure-oriented test methods define test cases on the basis of the internal program structures and are widely used. Path-based test is one of the important Structure-oriented test methods during software development. However, there is still lack of automatic and highly efficient tool for generating basic paths in white-box testing. In view of this, an automatic and efficient method for generating basic paths is proposed in this paper. This method firstly transforms the source-code program into corresponding control flow graph (CFG). By modifying the original CFG to a strongly connected graph, a new algorithm (ABPC) is designed to automatically construct all basic paths. The ABPC algorithm has computational complexity linear to the number of total edges and nodes in the CFG. Through performance evaluation of many examples, it is shown that the proposed method is correct and scalable to very large test cases. The proposed method can be applied to basis path testing easily

    A critical review into the evolution of Japanese Project Management: A comparative approach

    The success or failure of a company relies on how a particular project is managed, and the proper use of project management improves management performance. This article emphasizes the importance of discovering more about project management with the help of two globally renowned project management methods, namely the United States (US) method (Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)) and the Japanese method (Project & Program Management (P2M) and Kaikaku (reform) Project Management (KPM)). The objectives of this article are (a) to identify the features and essence of P2M/KPM; and (b) to compare them with those of PMBOK. Features and essence of P2M/KPM are innovative reformations, value creation, flexibility, mission-driven approach, 3K- kakusin (innovation), kaizen (improvement) and kaihatsu (development) and 3S- scheme, system and service project models. The comparative results show that PMBOK and P2M/KPM both have different philosophies in terms of scope, managerial approach and problem-solving methods. Identifying suitable criteria will provoke interest in organizations to implement the most suitable method in their project management processes

    Investigation of Energy Use Pattern and Emission Discharge in Nigeria: A Case Study of South West Zone

    Electricity demand has increased with population growth, industrialization and civilization. Most householders are barely conscious of the conservative measures for available limited supply, while the environmental impact has rarely been taken into cognizance by consumers. The study examines end-users attitude to energy consumption in Nigeria based on four scenarios. Gaseous emissions data obtained from prepaid and post-paid metering systems usage in low-income and high-income housing types were analyzed. Results obtained indicate strong relationship between energy use and emissions with significantly different emission generation. About 38% and 23% reduction in global warming and acidification potential is achieved by a switch to prepaid meters for both income earners. Post-paid low-income earners utilized the highest energy (59.8kW/hr) while the prepaid high-income earners had the minimum (31.1kW/hr). Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from both earners followed similar trend. Prepaid metering system usage improves energy consumption, thereby offsetting global warming and acidification impacts

    Properties of Industrial Slag as Fine Aggregate in Concrete

    The main objective of this paper is to use the industrial waste such as bottom ash and Weld Slag (WS) as the partial replacement for fine aggregates in concrete. This paper presents the chemical analysis and strength properties of industrial solid waste such as bottom ash, weld slag 1 (WS 1) and weld slag 2 (WS 2). Their chemical compositions were identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of the bottom ash and weld slag was recognized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and their morphology were studied by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The compressive strength of concrete with 10% replacement of fine aggregate to the industrial waste shows higher strength than the normal concrete and hence this industrial waste can be used as fine aggregate in concrete

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is a group of techniques that have quite a potential to be applied to pavement engineering and management. In this study, we developed a practical, flexible and out of the box approach to apply genetic algorithms to optimizing the budget allocation and the road maintenance strategy selection for a road network. The aim is to provide an alternative to existing software and better fit the requirements of an important number of pavement managers. To meet the objectives, a new indicator, named Road Global Value Index (RGVI), was created to contemplate the pavement condition, the traffic and the economic and political importance for each and every road section. This paper describes the approach and its components by an example confirming that genetic algorithms are very effective for the intended purpose

    Impact of Mobile Phone Electromagnetic Waves on Brainwaves

    In the era of wireless communication, cellular phone becomes an indispensable accessory to most people. People use cellular phone to interact with others, perform commercial and financial transactions, or conducting recreational activities, etc. The advance in wireless technology and escalate of broadband networks not only flourish communications industry and application service providers but also encourage people perform prolonged wireless network activities under the risk of over exposing themselves in long term high frequency electromagnetic waves. For example, some people conduct excessive phone-trading activities, as it is necessary to the job, and some people exercise the non-stop e-learning or recreation activities on mobile devices with long hours. However, would prolonged exposure to high frequency EMW environment bring adverse effects on human health? This research from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience investigates the effect of EMW from cellular phone to the energy distribution of human brainwave characteristic band by examine brainwave changes of test subjects when exposing to high frequency EMW environment. Experiment uses left ear and right ear to answer the phone separately. The calling session is divided into three stages: the instant of call connection, during the call, and after the call. On each ear, the brainwave signal of each calling stage is extracted and analyzed. The experiment shows at the instant of call connection stage, resulting maximum EMW strength, having extreme effect on the energy distribution of the human brainwave characteristic band, and causing severe changes on the energy of human brainwave
