Performance Comparison of A New Non-RSSI Based Wireless Transmission Power Control Protocol with RSSI Based Methods:Experimentation with Real World Data
In this paper, simulations with MATLAB are used to compare the performance of a RSSI-based output power control with non-RSSI based adaptive power in terms of saving energy and extending the lifetime of battery powered wireless sensor nodes. This non-RSSI (received signal strength indicator) based adaptive power control algorithm does not use RSSI side information to estimate the link quality. The non-RSSI based approach has a unique methodology to choose the appropriate power level. It has drop-off algorithm that enables it to come back from a higher to a lower power level when deemed necessary. The performance parameters are compared with the RSSI-based adaptive power control algorithm and fixed power transmission. In order to evaluate the protocols in the real world scenarios, RSSI data from different indoor radio environments are collected. In simulation, these RSSI values are used as an input to the RSSI based power control algorithm to calculate the packet success rates and the energy expenditures. In this paper we present extensive analysis of the simulation results to find out the advantages and limitations of the non-RSSI based adaptive power control algorithm under different channel conditions
Minute-Level Speed Identification and Assessment of Bacteria/Cells Using Electrokinetic Assistance
Conventional techniques for detection and analysis of cells/bacteria use Western blot and ELISA kits that are high cost and long time consuming. An ideal advanced biosensor (molecular or whole cells detections) unit must have several important features: rapid detection time (<15 minutes), high sensitivity (102 cells/ml for whole cell detection or sub-nM concentration for molecular detection), high specificity, small, and inexpensive instrumentation/configuration. Two novel platforms will be introduced here, including an optofluidic system for the rapid on-chip detection of bacterial infection and a cell-based biochip for the label-free assessment of drug susceptibility on cancer cells. Rapid identification of rare pathogen from a very dense human blood sample is realized through combining the hybrid electrokinetic concentration with on-chip surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) identification of bacteria based on their detected SERS spectra. Compared to the current method in the hospital, this simple and rapid platform accelerated the detection time from 2 days to a few minutes. The cell-based biochip uses a novel, rapid, and label-free approach- AC electric field induced electro-rotation (eROT) to evaluate the drug susceptibility of cancer cells. The isolated lung cancer cells were successfully analyzed using eROT approach for the rapid and label-free assessment of the drug susceptibility of cancer cells. eROT spectra for different drug-treated cancer cells was successfully determined to the drug resistance and susceptibilities through their frequency-dependent rotation speeds. The relationship and trend between eROT method and conventional method are very agreement
Gear Fault Diagnosis Based on Narrowband Demodulation with Frequency Shift and Spectrum Edit
To address the difficulties on the vibration feature extraction of gear localized faults for rotating machinery under varying speed conditions, an improved narrowband demodulation method with spectrum edit and frequency shift is proposed in the paper. The vibration signal is acquired and resampled at constant angle increments at first, by which the non-stationary signal is converted into a quasi-stationary signal in the angular domain to reduce the distortions caused by the speed fluctuations. Subsequently, the signal in the angular domain is processed by a synchronous average algorithm, where the noises can be eliminated effectively and the order components corresponding to the gear faults become prominent. Finally, the narrowband demodulation scheme with the spectrum edit and frequency shift is applied on the averaged signal. By using the spectrum edit, most of unconcerned components can be filtered out effectively. Moreover, the frequency shift property of the Fourier transform is employed in the proposed demodulation scheme to obtain a better phase demodulation result. Simulations and experiments support the proposed scheme positively
OPPA-AC: Optimal Path Planning based on Ant Colony Algorithm for Temporary Isolated Node in WSN
In real wireless sensor network application (WSN), several nodes may suffer from link failure problem. Link failure is a problem that may exist in the presence of obstacles which blocked the wireless connection between nodes. While the link between nodes is blocked, the node will be temporary isolated from the cluster; thus, their data will not reach the destination node. The temporary node isolation problem becomes more challenging if the data should be arrived on time. The traditional clustering algorithm (LEACH) is not considered the temporary isolated node, which cause longer waiting time for data delivery in certain rounds. In order to solve this problem, we proposed the ant colony-based optimal path planning algorithm (OPPA-AC). The OPP-AC was improved the LEACH algorithm by providing alternative path for temporary isolated nodes and guarantee their data arrived in the destination. Based on the experimental result, the OPP-AC surpassed the traditional algorithm in term of waiting time
Multi-band Slot Antenna
A small-size printed antenna is developed for the application of mobile phones. The architecture of antenna bases on the concept of coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding with slot design. The antenna is planned by an inverted triangular monopole structure with the overall size of 50 mm×120 mm(shown in Fig.1). The proposed antenna was fabricated on PCB with FR4 dielectric substrate. The substrate thickness is 1.6 mmwith the relative permittivity of ~ 4.45. The slots are added to adjust resonance frequency and achieve characteristic of multi-band, which may cover the applications of GPS, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), and LTE (Long Term Evolution). By the trial of simulation to tune the design of slots, an optimum design of antenna can be obtained. Fig.2 presents the simulated and measured return loss of the antenna. Even though, there are few minor differences between the simulation and measured data. The measured and simulated results still can agree with each other. The achieved bandwidths are 0.54 to 1.01 GHz, 1.34 to 2.28 GHz, and 2.55 to 2.90 GHz, while the return loss ( ) is limited more than 6 dB. This antenna is well suitable for the using of mobile phone applications
Using Ground-penetrating Radar to Promote the Investigating Efficiency in Mud Pumping Disaster of Railways
Currently about 85% of the railway structure is constructed traditionally in Taiwan, which means the foundation of railways is composed by in-situ soil materials and covered by ballast, sleepers and tracks. The rail is continued by fishplates and then bolted. While train passes here, the deflection caused by repeated loads. The repeatedly force transfers through ballast to the saturated foundation, may create vacuum to draw phenomenon, called pump effect or mud pumping. It could lead to serious train derailment capsized.
Present mud pumping detection method has to be performed during the non-operating time at night by visual. However, this approach may have omissions and shortcomings perspective concerns, and slow to find disasters during the rainy season. Using non-destructive testing techniques (ground-penetrating radar) to inspect the quality of rail bed is widely in foreign. However, detecting the distribution of mud beneath rail is an attractive subject here. By the usage of mention technology in this research, this technology is expected to be promoted.
This study has been agreed by the official administration, Taiwan Railway Bureau, to be carried out in Nanwan branch in Hsinchu by using ground-penetrating radar. Comparing with the visual inspection results, the mud pumping can be verified. Where most serious mud pumping phenomenon observed was open to prove the function. The study is expected to launch the road bed structure further rehabilitation plans and preventative maintenance engineering. Furthermore, cost due to misjudgment is expected to be saved and traffic safety improved

Comparison of Regenerative Braking Efficiencies of MY2012 and MY2013 Nissan Leaf
The use of kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) is the best solution presently available to dramatically improve the energy economy of passenger cars. The paper presents an experimental analysis of the energy flow to and from the battery of a MY 2012 and a MY 2013 Nissan Leaf covering the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS). The two vehicles differ for the integration of the electric drivetrain component, plus a different use of the electric motor and the regenerative brakes, in addition to a different weight. It is shown that while the efficiency propulsive power to vehicle / power from battery are basically unchanged, at about 87-89 %, the efficiency power to the battery / braking power to vehicle are significantly improved from values of about 70-80 % to values of 72-87 %. The analysis provides a state-of-the-art benchmark of the propulsion and regenerative braking efficiencies of electric vehicles
Optical Design of Direct Projection Bicycle Light
Optical lighting systems usually demand specific illuminance distributions to comply with regulatory requirements for various applications. This study demonstrates an optical design of bicycle light integrated with a special Fresnel lens and a reflector. To enhance the light intensity, the proposed bicycle light adopts direct projection rather than reflection. The Fresnel lens is used to concentrate light and achieve the specific distribution of illuminance. The reflector provides a parabola reflective surface and reduces the divergence of light to greatly cast out parallel light, which improves the illuminance. For optimum case, the simulation is based on the total LED power of 180 lm, and the optical power is analyzed as 85 lm with a distance of 10 m away from the bicycle light. The illuminance distribution of bicycle light and cut-off line can meet the requirements of German StVZO regulations
Identifying Islamic Values in The Embodiment of Makassar Traditional Houses in Barombong Coastal
Indonesia is a country with majority Muslim population. However, in the architectural design, people was not significantly using the Islamic values and tend to be affected by western modern architecture on their house embodiment. Therefore, this research explores a house architecture based on Islamic values, by taking the case of traditional houses on the coast. The coastal areas chosen because it still has traditional houses condensed with local cultural community. Using observational techniques, interviews with selected informants and questionnaires, and supported by literature review, this research was analyzed by qualitative method. This paper aims to identify Islamic values in the embodiment of Makassar traditional houses in the Barombong coastal area, and enrich the concept of Islamic-valued on house architecture. The research findings are the embodiment of Makassar traditional houses in Barombong coastal area which are generally shaped the house terrace called as bale-bale and paladang, which are deemed to have Islamic values, like: (1) In Islam, the way to visit a house is coming from the front, instead of behind. Evidently, this way existed in traditional house, (2) Role of the bale-bale as an extension of the main room which can be used to interact with neighbors and the community (hablunminannas) and paladang can serve as a transition zone to screen guests before welcoming them inside the house (privacy) and guests to greet before the residents of the house is ready to receive, (3) In the tradition of building houses, already recognized the concept of space-oriented four wind directions (sulapa’ appaka), which significantly according to the concept of Islam which require orientation to the qibla oriented home. The study concluded that with the local wisdom possessed by the Makassar traditional house on Barombong coastal area discovered the Islamic values in its realization
