Damage accumulation near the cold-expanded hole due to high-cycle fatigue by crack compliance method
The novel destructive method is implemented for quantitative assessment of fatigue damage accumulation in the stress concentration zone accompanied by residual stress due to cold expansion of the through-thickness hole. Damage accumulation is reached by preliminary cyclic loading of plane specimens with cold-expanded holes. Narrow notches, emanating from the hole edge at different stages of high-cycle fatigue, serve to manifest a damage level. These notches are inserted without applying external load. Deformation response to local material removing, caused by pure residual stress influence, is measured by electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) in terms of in-plane displacement components. Normalized values of the notch mouth open displacement (NMOD), in-plane displacement component at the initial point of the notch acting in the notch direction (U0), in-plane displacement component at the final point of the notch acting in the notch direction (U1) and the stress intensity factor (SIF) are used as current damage indicators. Numerical integration of curves, describing an evolution of each fracture mechanics parameter over lifetime, produces the damage accumulation function in an explicit form. It is established that all four fracture mechanics parameters give very close results
Evaluation of the survivability of CFRP honeycomb-cored panels in compression after impact tests
This paper is oriented to the experimental research of the mechanics of the CFRP sandwich plates, glass and carbon fiber sample panels with a large-cell honeycomb core. The method for testing polymer composite sample plates in compression after impact (CAI) tests with joint use of a testing machine and a video system for deformation field registration was tested. Analysis of the experimental data obtained highlighted the impactive sensitivity zone for the test specimens. A quantitative assessment of the load-bearing capacity of glass and carbon fiber sample panels in CAI tests with the different levels of the drop weight impact energy was performed. Photos of samples after impact have been provided.
Vic-3D non-contact three-dimensional digital optical system was used to register the displacement and deformation fields on the surface of the samples. The video system was used to evaluate various damage mechanisms, including matrix cracking, delaminations, and rupture of the damaged fibers. The paper studied the evolution of non-homogeneous deformation fields on the surface of the composite samples during the post-impact compression tests and analyzed the configuration of non-homogeneous deformation fields
Temporal analysis of the performance of an elevated concrete tank considering the corrosion of the steel reinforcement
Reinforced concrete water storage tanks are civil engineering structures subject to very aggressive atmospheric conditions that expose them to harmful corrosion risk. This dangerous phenomenon caused by the penetration of chloride ions causes pitting corrosion and leads to the reduction of the section of the reinforcements and consequently to the loss of strength and the structure performance. In this study, we are interested in analyzing the performance of an elevated storage tank, taking into account the corrosion of the reinforcements subjected to tensile stress, by considering environments with different rates of aggressiveness. A method based on Housner's model is used to evaluate the tension stresses in the reinforced concrete (RC) pedestal (supporting system) of the tank, subjected to the seismic actions. A pitting corrosion model is developed in order to determine the evolution in time of the reinforcements section in different environments. Several parameters influencing corrosion are taken into account, such as concrete cover and the concentration of chlorides ions
Study of mechanical behavior by fatigue of a cracked plate repaired by different composite patches
This research is based on the study of the fatigue behavior of an aluminum alloy plate with a central crack. The plate is subjected to a tensile loading on its lower and upper parts. Several parameters were highlighted, such as the loading effect with a load ratio R = 0. The effects of the load ratio on both the repaired and not repaired plates, by two composite patches, which are boron/epoxy and graphite/epoxy, were investigated, as well as the effect of the plate material on plate life, comparing different material
Effect of multi-layer prosthetic foam liner on the stresses at the stump–prosthetic interface
The prosthetic liner plays a significant role in the redistribution of the pressure between the stump and the socket, as it adding a cushioning layer between the stump and the socket which relieves pain and makes the prosthesis more comfortable.
This study employed nonlinear finite element analyses to investigate the peak pressure and shear stress at stump–prosthetic interface in the case of multi-layer prosthetic foam liner, this liner having an inner polymeric foam layer Surrounded by another type of polymeric foam layer, we used three different types of foams in different order to define this liner (flexible polyurethane foam, polyurethane-shape memory polymer foam, and natural rubber latex foam). That’s allows comparing 6 deferent configuration of multi-layer prosthetic foam liner.
Residual stresses near cold-expanded hole at different stages of high-cycle fatigue by crack compliance data
Experimental method for a characterization of high-cycle fatigue evolution of residual stress near cold-expanded hole is developed and implemented. The technique is based on simultaneous measurements of deformation response to narrow notch, inserted in residual stress field, on opposite specimen’s faces by electronic speckle-pattern interferometry (ESPI). Two-side measurements of notch opening displacements are performed when a single notch, emanating from cold-expanded hole edge, is inserted. The transition from in-plane displacement component to residual stress intensity factor (SIF) values follows from the relationships of modified version of the crack compliance method. The approach provides a difference in residual stress values referred to mandrel entrance and exit surface. Notches are inserted at different stages of low-cycle fatigue without applying external load. The results obtained describe fine nuances of residual stress evolution, which cannot be considered as monotonic relaxation
A new methodology to predict damage tolerance based on compliance via global-local analysis
Over the years several design philosophies to fatigue developed in order to combine structural safety and economy to manufacturing and operating aircraft process. The safe-life approach, which consists of designing and manufacturing a safe aeronautical structure throughout its useful life, results in factors that oversize the structural elements, preventing the possibility of failure and evidently leading to high design costs. On the other hand, the approach based on the damage tolerance concept, in which it is assumed that the structure, even whether damaged, is able to withstand the actions for which it was designed until the detection of a crack due to fatigue or other defects during its operation. Here, we propose a new methodology to the damage tolerance problem in which two-dimensional global-local analysis at different levels of external requests will be made by means of compliance, aimed at finding a relationship between fatigue life and the Paris constant. Moreover, the BemCracker2D program for simulating two-dimensional crack growth is used. This methodology has been proved to be an efficient and applied alternative in the damage tolerance analysis
Experimental study of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect under complex loading of Al-Mg alloy: procedure issues
The aim of this work is to solve the methodological issues of the experimental study of the nucleation and propagation of deformation bands due to the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect under conditions of complex loading. It is of interest to determine the boundaries of unstable plastic deformation of the AMg6 alloy under complex loading conditions. A technique for controlling the loading process with a given rate of deformation intensity of materials has been worked out. The results showed that short-term stops and unloading during loading influence on the value of critical deformation, at which the manifestation of the jerky flow begins. The evolution of inhomogeneous strain fields and local strain rates under conditions of manifestation of jerky flow during tension with torsion tests of Al-Mg alloy samples
Effect of Gaseous carburizing thermochemical treatment on tribological behavior of Ti–6Al–4V alloy
This study, concerns the improvement of the hardness and resistance to wear of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy surface by means of thermochemical treatment, for obtaining coatings on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy gives performance of resistance to wear phenomena. Three-thermochemical treatment time (2h, 4h, and 6h) was chosen for investigation of the effect of such treatment on this alloy. The hardness test under an indentation load of 50 gf with a Vickers pyramidal indenter revealed that the surface hardness is 335 Hv for the untreated samples. On the other hand the hardness reaches approximately 1500 Hv during gas cementation at 930 °C for variable times (2h, 4h, 6h) followed by quenching at 840 °C in an oil medium, which was accompanied by a significant improvement in wear resistance. The characterization of the modified surface layers was made by means of a microscopic analysis and by X-ray diffraction. The case-hardening made it possible to obtain a wear resistance greater than that of the alloy not treated, minimal loss of mass by dry friction and an improvement in roughness as well as a good coefficient of friction
Structural model updating based on metamodel using modal frequencies
Modal frequencies are often used in structural model updating based on the finite element model, and metamodel technique is often applied to the corresponding optimization process. In this work, the Kriging model is used as the metamodel. Firstly, the influence of different correlation functions of Kriging model is inspected, and then the approximate capability of Kriging model is investigated via inspecting the approximate accuracy of nonlinear functions. Secondly, a model updating procedure is proposed based on the Kriging model, and the samples for constructing Kriging model are generated via the method of Optimal Latin Hypercube. Finally, a typical frame structure is taken as a case study and demonstrates the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed approach. The results show the Kriging model can match the target functions very well, and the finite element model can achieve accurate frequencies and can reliably predict the frequencies after model updating
