Maintaining Community and Identity As a Ugandan Asian Post Expulsion
No full textix, 30 p.On August 4th, 1972, Asians in Uganda woke up to a nightmare: they had 90 days to leave the country, an order put in by Idi Amin, the President of Uganda. The expulsion left a large part of Uganda's population under extreme duress. Uganda was their home and had been their home for multiple generations. All Ugandan Asians were forced to leave their homes, their livelihoods, but where would they go now that they had no home? If they were British citizens or British Protectorates, they became refugees but if they were Ugandan citizens, they became stateless. And regardless of their citizenship status before the expulsion, they lost their identity as Ugandans and were forced to obtain another in order to survive. As they dispersed to all parts of the globe such as England, Canada, and India, the communities, and identities they had built in Uganda would forever be changed. Belonging to a community or to a nation are feelings that help create an identity, both as an individual and a community. But how can you form and maintain an identity if that belonging is forcefully taken away? This research, and its findings from the conducted interviews, in conjunction with current literature surrounding the expulsion and theories of belonging, individual and national identity, and community, answer this main question, showing how that even through losing their homes, Ugandan Asians were able to rebuild and maintain communities and reform their identities post expulsion
Corticosterone Treatment During Critical Illness Alters Hippocampal c-Fos Signal after Recovery
No full textv, 36 p.After recovering from the intensive care unit (ICU), many critical illness survivors are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or suffer PTSD-like symptoms from their experience. Research has shown that recall of ICU-paired traumatic memories is associated with PTSD. In human studies, the injection of high levels of glucocorticoids during the ICU stay has been shown to prevent PTSD after discharge. Due to their role in emotional memory acquisition within the limbic system, it has been proposed that early onset injection of glucocorticoids during ICU stay can protect against future recall of traumatic memories. Earlier behavioral experiments found that corticosterone treatment during critical illness led to an enhancement of factual memory without an effect on fear memory. In this study, we explore hippocampal immunoreactivity to contextual fear recall and neutral memory recall after recovery from a critical illness in an animal model by staining for c-Fos, a marker of neuronal reactivity. Histology of different areas of the hippocampus found higher c-Fos signal in mice given exogenous corticosterone treatment during the critical illness period after contextual fear conditioning. We propose that the enhancement of neutral memories under critical illness may be due to the higher neural activity observed in the hippocampus under corticosterone treatment. This study is especially important as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has increased ICU occupancy drastically. As it has been found that a higher number of delirious memories during ICU stay can create a higher chance for PTSD, further research into the formation of factual memory during critical illness may be important in prevention. This could be achieved through follow up surveys with survivors of critical illness that were treated with glucocorticoids
Urban or Rural? Does it matter to bumble bees An analysis in Kalamazoo, MI
No full textv, 32 p.Bumble bees are important native pollinators that help maintain healthy ecosystems. Bumble bee species are declining in vast geographical areas due to many factors, including reductions in suitable nest site locations and floral resources, as land uses shift toward urbanization and agricultural intensification. The potential for urban areas to support bumble bees is understudied. The purpose of this study was to see how environment type impacts bumble bee species richness, abundance, and diversity in both urban and rural environments. Data from private and public spaces was gathered through the usage of citizen science. Observations were solicited under a previously established iNaturalist citizen science project, Southwest Michigan Bee Watch, and past data from this project was analyzed alongside observations submitted in summer 2022. Alongside citizen science data, I documented bumble bee species abundance and richness at fifteen sites along an urban to rural gradient in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Sites were categorized as either urban or rural through percentage of green space within a 1km radius of the site, as well as site distance from the center of Kalamazoo. Bumble bee photos within the citizen science database were properly identified to species by me and other contributors to iNaturalist. A total of 1040 individual bumble bees were documented (563 in rural areas, 477 in urban areas). Overall abundance of bumble bees, including species of concern (Bombus auricomus) and declining species (B. perplexus, B. vagans, B. fervidus, and B. citrinus) were favored in rural environments compared to urban ones. However, Shannon Diversity Indices were similar for the two environments. More information concerning the preferred nesting and floral resources of declining species is needed to determine if suitable habitat is available or could be created within urban environments

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Using Complexes based on Earth-Abundant Metals
No full textix, 38 p.Earth-abundant metal complexes are of great interest to chemists as photocatalysts reduce carbon dioxide to more valuable molecules (e.g. carbon monoxide). Using these photo-driven systems for the reduction of CO2 promotes promising advancement to decrease our carbon footprint. These proposed systems strive to replicate natural photoreduction by directly reducing CO2. To successfully artificialize photosynthesis, a sacrificial electron donor (eD), photosensitizer (PS), and catalyst (CAT) are needed to drive the reduction reaction. Metal complexes are often used as photosensitizers and CO2 reduction catalysts due to their photophysical and photochemical properties, high selectivity, and flexible molecular design. Previous advancements in the Bizzarri Lab have reported heteroleptic CuI complexes as photosensitizers. Their unique structures adopt a diimine and diphosphine ligand that demonstrates strong oxidation properties in the excited state, which is ideal to avoid photodegradation. In this report, a library of four heteroleptic, diaminediphosphine CuI complexes were synthesized and utilized as efficient photosensitizers. In addition, 11 new catalysts derived from tetraphenylporphyrins, 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, and terppyridine complexes were prepared using Fe, Cu, Mn, and Co metal centers. The efficacy of the photosensitizers and novel catalysts were assessed using existing photocatalytic systems at the visible light range ( = 420 ) and measuring the amount of CO2 reduced to CO. Complexes made from substituted tetraphenylporphyrins and terppyrdine, metalated with iron were shown to catalytically reduce CO2 with a greater turnover number than other known published photocatalytic systems using CuI complexes photosensitizers
Anishinaabe Empowerment Within the Boarding School Experience
No full text33 p.It is estimated that by 1900 over 20,000 Native American children had attended government run boarding schools and that by 1925 that number had tripled. The boarding schools were a traumatic experience for many children who attended these schools, and they experienced abuse and neglect at the hands of their administrators. It is important to note, however, that the boarding school experience was not stagnant. It evolved over the years and, as generations of graduates entered the real world, it was apparent that federal policy would have to change. One issue that federal agents soon discovered, was that Native American tribes were different in the customs and traditions that they observed. Federal policies that might work for one tribe might not work for another. Therefore, we see different experiences within these boarding schools occurring regionally. For the Anishinaabe tribes in and around the Great Lakes region, these students found ways to empower themselves and renew their ability to operate within an ever-changing society, a society that was reluctant to allow indigenous people to participate. It was through the boarding school experience that many Anishinaabe found ways to strengthen their tribal identity despite government efforts to strip them of their culture and traditions. Furthermore, their instruction they received at these institutions would provide them with the necessary skill set to participate in a growing industrialized economy
Capitalist Corporate Surveillance in a Postindustrial State : Privacy Concerns, Social Categorization, and Power Imbalances
No full textvi, 45 p.Mass data collection through smartphones and smart devices for corporate profit, or capitalist surveillance, is a relatively new concept to scholars. In the digital age, our societies rely on technology more than ever before, creating innumerable amounts of personal user data that is being collected, analyzed, and sold for profit. Through a sociological perspective, this paper explains the omnipresence of capitalist surveillance to argue that consumer's private lives are being commodified by the data market, largely without consumers' full knowledge. Current systems and laws in the United States fail to protect citizens from unfair data collection, leaving minority populations in an especially precarious position. As the practices of social categorization are automated and hidden from consumer view, users' privacy rights are being undermined; power balances between the elite and the public are being exacerbated as consumers are being exploited by a system they have very little agency in. By illuminating corporate surveillance practices and their predatory natures, I aim to shed light on the importance of consumer awareness, data collection legislation, and users' rights to privacy
