This method analyzes resurging levels of the cancer biomarker CA125, which constitutes <1% of the larger mucin protein, MUC16, contained within a tandem repeat section (Figure 1). While the current detection method is effective and widely used, applying targeted mass spectrometry could allow for more accurate and reliable identification and quantification of low abundance proteins, such as MUC16 from small samples.Kalamazoo College.     Examining the Relationship Between Toxic Stress Caused By Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Health Disorders

    1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HAdverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) are a term coined by Felitti et. al (1998) and can be defined as an identified set of adversities that coexist within a child’s home. This unstable environment can significantly increase the chances of toxic stress development. The repeated activation of the body's stress response system not only causes wear and tear of the body’s allostatic load but also risks permanent alteration to the architecture of a developing brain. Specifically, the overactivation of hypothalamic pituitary gland axis, amygdala, hippocampus, and hormones being hyper secreted, which have all been linked to different mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.     The Paradox of Blackness : Everything and Nothing All at Once

    vi, 47 p.The Global capitalization of slavery was a strategically complex system to develop the world economically, politically, and socially for the domination of whiteness. Through the erasure of historical narratives, whiteness has aimed to produce a narrative where Black people enter history as slaves. Social death is a concept that is believed to be the state of Blackness through the time and space of slavery where the enslaved were robbed of their personhood and subject to gratuitous violence. This becomes more complex once we examine the truths around Black history and how these conditions of enslavement are still present in the way Black people are treated today. Black people did not enter as slaves, nor did they actually undergo the process of social death. We survive in what has been coined to be the afterlife of slavery. The afterlife of slavery maintains institutional systems of oppression that still disadvantage Black people inciting violence and anti-Black terror against them. Slavery was never abolished; it has simply been reproduced and manufactured into contemporary structures. In this discussion, I have drawn upon the research of scholars to formulate an analysis of how Blackness is constructed and its ways of being

    Learning Beekeeping and Varroa Mite Management

    iv, 33 p.For my research, I shadowed two experienced beekeepers in person throughout the late summer to fall season. We attended multiple meetings at the local bee clubs and observed their educational presentations. I additionally worked in their apiaries and gathered extensive knowledge about general protocol, winter prep, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for honeybees. Most of this research was immersive and experiential and allowed me to get a close look into the beekeeping community to get an understanding of the issues they currently face. Another component of my research was reading and online research for the creation of my literature review derived from my experiences. Many of these sources were referred to me by my mentors. This total gathered knowledge was used to write my literature review on pest mitigation. Specifically, it is a deep dive into current pest management strategies developed against varroa mites, which are one of the most recent and damaging threats to honeybees. These mites not only deplete the bees of their fat reserves, but also weaken the immune system of the entire colony to other diseases. Though varroa mitigation is a developing field, there are many solutions and mitigation methods on the market that vary in effectiveness depending on the nature of each varroa case. For example, oxalic acid and amitraz are commonly used to kill varroa mites, but some studies have shown that varroa mites have grown resistant to amitraz, while oxalic acid can be harmful to the honeybees. These issues with current strategies have led to selective breeding, where beekeepers are purchasing certain strains of honeybees that exhibit enhanced grooming behaviors to help reduce varroa numbers. This research was an interesting addition to my experience because varroa management has become very much interwoven into the everyday practice of modern beekeeping

    12 p.“You Can’t Change the Past” is a collection of artwork about revisiting my own experiences with animal death and abuse. Over the course of 10 weeks, I gathered different stories from my friends and news outlets to really delve into the most inhumane and unethical ways that animals have been impacted by humans. As dark as this topic may be, I felt like it was something that needed to be discussed. This project was made using mainly watercolor and acrylic paint with ultraviolet paint (UV) paint, alcohol markers, and neon-colored pencils as secondary materials

    Geometry Within Infinity

    12 p.I started my college career majoring in physics, but soon changed to my passion of painting. I took my love for physics with me into my works, and started this series based on the complex idea of infinity. Infinity is the concept that I found the most fascinating in my study of physics, and I have always had a deep love and appreciation for our galaxy and space. This series explores the way infinity works in physics, math, geometry, art, and life. I aimed to make abstract art of this abstract concept that had as much depth in the work as the depth of the concept. The paintings started as a direct representation of scientific diagrams of theory on infinite multiverses. Although a hard concept to grasp, the diagram is simple circles aligned. From there I incorporated imagery of galaxies and space to ground the painting in something commonly known to be infinite. It creates something people know and can latch onto when trying to traverse this complex subject. I layer in infinite geometry symbols throughout the pieces and use a consistent color pallet to create continuity between the individual art pieces. Finally, I created the pieces to combine in a way that shows a golden spiral running through all of them. The golden spiral and golden ratio are important elements of fine art and are a natural phenomenon. All the individual works try back into one another creating another form of infinity: an infinite loop. This is used to wrap the concept into a whole, easy package to be viewed and understood. The goal of this work is to represent a complete view of all the facets of life that the concept of infinity touches in a coherent body of work. I aimed to create a tangible collection of works that make this seemingly untouchable concept graspable, and in turn created an infinity all its own

    Epilepsy Associated Mutation in Sodium Channel Nav1.2 Protein Impacts its Binding Affinity to Scaffolding Protein Ankyrin-B

    v, 22 p.Neurons are highly sophisticated and regulated cells that rely on voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) to propagate action potentials that communicate information to neighboring neurons. Intracellular scaffolding proteins such as ankyrins, stabilize and uniquely localize these channels to the soma and dendrites of neurons. De novo mutations near the binding domain of VGSC NaV1.2 have been found in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and epileptic disorders (ED). It is hypothesized that disrupting the binding interaction between VGSCs and ankyrin proteins may negatively impact synaptic connections crucial for brain development and learning. This study investigates whether an epilepsy associated mutation, E1115K, in VGSC NaV1.2 impacts its binding affinity to scaffolding protein ankyrin-B. The results from binding assays utilizing microscale thermophoresis revealed diminished binding affinity between epilepsy disease variant NaV1.2 protein and wild-type (WT) ankyrin-B protein. Furthermore, the binding assay of our negative control showed evidence of other binding interactions present outside of the core binding domain in NaV1.2. Further research is needed to analyze the impacts of this mutation on neuronal function. This research is the first indicator that the epilepsy associated E1115K mutation in NaV1.2 may impact neuronal function and play a role in the development in epileptic disorders

    Infant bonding and brain development

The brain stem has modular neurons that are influenced by experience, and these modular neurons can define temperament, which will shape behavioral development (Hart). Attachments formed with caregivers’ help provide emotional resources for children, as well as improved learning and memory skills. Children who spend extended time in daycare facilities may miss out on bonding opportunities; programs that emphasize consistent interactions between children and volunteers may promote the brain development associated with bonding that these children need for optimal brain development.Kalamazoo College.
