United States Trade War With China and the Effect on the Soybean Market in The United States

    No full text
25 p.The purpose of this study was to examine the buildup of a trade war between China and the United States. Specifically, looking at the soybean industry in the United States. The study will break down the economies of the two countries and look at the soybean industry in both of them. Next it will analyze the how and why the events that led to the trade war. The analytical section of this paper uses a welfare analysis approach to examine the winners and losers of international trade. These welfare analyses will be focused on the soybean industry in the United States. These analyses will demonstrate that the American soybean farmer did not win in international trade and that they lost a lot of profit due to the policies that Donald Trump imposed

Web Development & API Integration : My 2021 Internship

    No full text
vii, 24 p.This summer I took an internship at a third-party logistics company. Originally, the plan was to create a web server for the company to share their important files, almost like API integration; however, this tool was already available to the company. Resources and carriers weren’t really the issue, it was that they haven’t been getting new customers. Their main goal was to increase their business and the number of customers that return. This is where I came up with the idea to create a new website for the company, and possibly even an app! Right away, I noticed some key features the company was missing in regard to technology, and I brought them up to the staff and I was surprised at how excited they were with my presentation. It turned out they were looking for some improvements to make the company more attractive. I was working everyday to learn the ins and outs, and learning how to work through their system came pretty naturally. This is when I was introduced to their IT group named TAI Assistant, as they are the ones who created the TMS system. They provided me with the knowledge I needed for beginning my journey into the world of web design. This summer internship experience has definitely helped me find my true calling in web development

    Collectivism and Individualism

    No full text
1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HMany researchers have been intrigued by Individualism versus Collectivism to categorize cultures and attitudes. These constructs are very broad, and authors have defined and operationalized them differently. There is a need for consensus on the definitions and for detailed specification of aspects within the broad constructs that can be more definitively operationalized.Kalamazoo College. Neuroterus saltatorius (Jumping gall wasp) Phenology and Abundance in Native and Expanded Ranges

    No full text
iv, 35 p.Neuroterus saltatorius (Jumping gall wasp) is a species of gall wasp that has expanded its range from the Pacific Northwest US into British Columbia since 1986. Gall abundance, developmental stage proportions, and developmental time were assessed for seven weeks during the summer of 2021 in both its native and expanded ranges. Photographs of Quercus garryana (Garry oak) leaves were analyzed for numbers of galls in early, middle, and late development, as well as visible signs of failure to develop or reaching maturity and dropping from the leaf. Data for each stage were compared between sites and survey period in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Temperature data were also collected to determine if there may be a correlation between climate and gall development. Overall, gall abundance was higher in the expanded range, consistent with previous results. Notably, gall development was slower in the expanded range. However, temperature does not account for the differences in gall abundance and phenology between regions. This documentation of N. saltatorius motivates future surveys of this species’ developmental patterns in its current range and a possible new outbreak in the Midwest. Moreover, this stands as a case study demonstrating that both abiotic and biotic factors should be examined, in order to understand the course of phytophagous insect range expansions

Administration & Website Design Internship : A Reflection

    No full text
10 p.In this paper, I will discuss my administration internship at BÜK STUDIOS & Co. and the continuation of the skills I obtained in my development of a website for a local Kalamazoo Thai restaurant, Bangkok Flavor. With both being local small businesses in the Kalamazoo area, helping my community is important to me and I plan to explain these themes in my paper. I will explain my developmental processes and show the graphic designs that I created from scratch, including a new logo for the restaurant. Throughout this paper, I will reflect on the challenges I faced and the successes I made, at the end explaining how these experiences helped me grow as a Computer Scientist and explore new fields that intermingled with my interest in design

Internal Framing and Structural Overhaul : An Exploration of the Bargaining for the Common Good Model in the Chicago Teachers Union

    No full text
iv, 61 p.Over the last decade, the Chicago Teachers Union {CTU) has gone on strike twice. These strikes were the result of a years long process to restructure the union and its mission. During these strikes, CTU pioneered the Bargaining for the Common Good approach to collective bargaining. This model utilizes the leverage held by unions during bargaining periods to win concessions around community-based demands. CTU's strikes in 2012 and 2019 served as bookends for the resurgent teachers union movement in the 2010's. The purpose of this study is to determine if the organizational restructuring of the Chicago Teachers Union occur because of a shift in framing of what the union should be, or if the reorganization of union structure created a new understanding of what a union can do at the bargaining table? Through interviews with members of CTU, I researched the role of internal framing and structural changes in CTU' s adoption of the Bargaining for the Common Good model. The data from this study illustrates how the organizational structures used to implement the Bargaining for the Common Good model in CTU were dependent on the union's internal framing

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy : A Review Integrating the Theoretical Components with the Scientific Research

    No full text
43 p.Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a widely studied treatment intervention for children who are victims of sexual abuse and who exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). TF-CBT utilizes a component- and phase-based hierarchical treatment framework in order to alleviate symptomology within these children. This review aims to provide a synthesis of the theoretical and scientific basis of evidence surrounding TF-CBT. Within the various randomized controlled trials (RCT’s) that have been conducted on child victims of sexual abuse with symptoms of PTSD who receive TF-CBT treatment, PTSD symptoms were reduced in nearly all cases. However, this review highlights that limited research has been conducted into determining how each one of the eight treatment components impacts the reduction of PTSD symptoms. Within this review, the TF-CBT framework will first be thoroughly described, then the scientific evidence regarding the general efficacy of the treatment will be provided, then the theoretical and scientific evidence behind the eight treatment components will be synthesized, and finally, suggestions to broaden the scope of TF-CBT research will be provided
