    Planned Parenthood South Texas with Promotoras in Cameron County

    1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HMy 2021 summer experiential project was with the South Texas Planned Parenthood partner program Habla Con Tu Hermana. I shadowed under Ms. Paula Saldaña, a community health worker and lead patient navigator at planned Parenthood. Ms. Paula Saldaña’s job is to train other health workers about sexual health education so they can go out to community events to educate and inform the community about what Planned Parenthood can offer. My time there was spent trying to close the gap, as much as possible, between Planned Parenthood health resources and the communities in South Texas. Not only that but, this is done in hopes to develop a positive community perspective on Planned Parenthood, to reach out to all socioeconomic groups and to decrease the high levels of sexual transmitted disease (STD) in South Texas. I shadowed Ms. Paula Saldaña because I am interested in the regional public health and sexual health education in Texas, the state I grew up in. As well as learning and teaching others about women’s health and sexual health education. By shadowing a community health worker and lead patient navigator, I gained a better appreciation for the work done to improve sexual health education and livelihood in my communities of South Texas.Kalamazoo College.     Macroinvertebrate Community Stream Survey of Campbell Creek, Van Buren Co., SW Michigan

    1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HBiomonitoring is when researchers collect data on bioindicators (living organisms) to determine the quality of an ecosystem. Commonly used bioindicators for freshwater streams are aquatic macroinvertebrates, organisms without a backbone that are visible to the naked eye. We surveyed Campbell Creek, a stream that flows past agricultural land before reaching the private property where we conducted our research. The owner of the property has built footbridges along the creek. For this study we explored: 1) Whether human disturbances would have a negative impact on habitat quality and macroinvertebrate communities compared to natural disturbances. 2) Whether the water quality of the stream would decrease at sites closest to the agricultural land. A goal for this study is to provide the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy information about the property’s streams to guide future research and conservation.Kalamazoo College.     Econometric Analysis of the Relationship Between English Premier League Teams' Transfer Market Activity and Levels of On-field Performance

Though the transfer market plays such an integral role in the realm of football, it has hardly been researched empirically. This paper aims to observe the link between the transfer market and the performance of teams participating in the English premier league in the last 10 years by using regression analysis. From the regression analysis, it was concluded that Net expenditure, the difference in total transfer income, and total transfer expenditure can positively impact a team’s performance while the number of transfers a team completes and a higher payroll can negatively impact the team’s performance

    “Where is Life?” A Search for Existence in the Universe

    30 p.Conversations about life in space tend to revolve on intelligent life, often looking for civilizations that are equivalent or grander than humanity. This ableist concept is one that has been going around before there was the ability for space exploration. With the light pollution of Houston, Texas, I rarely saw the constellations. My first time going to the countryside was spectacular, but the first time I flew in an airplane during night took my breath away. The clouds below and the stars above while I seemingly floated in between. What life means has evolved throughout the creation of this series. I have explored many mediums, but acrylic painting tends to be what I lean towards to. To shine like the stars, I also enjoy adding other elements that may result in a three-dimensional quality. At first it was glitter or holographic pieces to add, but I have found use in other crafting materials to include in my paintings such as broken glass pieces for centerpieces and beads from necklaces. The depiction of “life” is based on my interests in the flora or fauna, eventually including natural disasters, parasites, and weather phenomenon. The life that exists on earth could easily exist out there in the universe. These are the worlds I am exploring

    Investigation into the causes of degrading radio signals during Geomagnetic Storms

    7 p.The release of solar winds from the sun has drastic effects on the Earth’s geomagnetic field and the Ionosphere. GPS navigation uses radio signals that travel from a satellite to a ground receiver, passing through the Ionosphere, and are susceptible to outside interference. During a magnetic storm, the charged plasma in the Ionosphere bends the path of the GPS radio waves, similar to how a lens bends light. The absence of pace weather allows the GPS systems to give information on individuals’ positions. During a space weather event, the Ionosphere is disturbed by the solar wind, making it harder for the GPS systems to properly give accurate posts due to the disrupted signals from the satellite to the ground receivers. The paper will investigate the effects of geomagnetic storms’ impact on GPS connections

    Feminine and the Divine: Explorations of Vulnerability and Agency in Japanese Science Fiction Films

    46 p.Science fiction is a mode in which present events are rendered in a new and unique light. The ability to render current events in a new light allows for additional critical thinking on recent events and allows individuals to explore the “why” regarding why a particular event occurred. In science-fiction, this “why” is commonly attributed to technology and its negative environmental impacts. Specifically, technology and its negative environmental impacts are driven by man’s desire for selfish gains at the earth’s expense. Often, man either captures nature through the use of technology, or technology is used to pollute or otherwise harm nature for an individual to acquire capital or land. These films allow a resolution to the negative effects of technology that individuals may not experience in the real-life aftermath of a significant event such as radiation or air pollution. By extension the science-fiction worlds not influenced by one particular event allow individuals to explore extremes in terms of what the world could become now that technology is arguably advancing overwhelmingly quickly (Sontag 224-225). These extremes of technology also allow extremes in terms of environmental pollution or disaster at the hands of its advancement. These films often allow some escape in the form of an individual who is often a minority or possesses a large amount of emotional and physical vulnerability. The savior character’s connection to nature and other individuals is heavily emphasized. The existence of this character is significant as it allows positive depictions of vulnerable populations in which they are able to significantly impact society around them to prevent further environmental disasters. By creating a savior for these vulnerable populations and in giving these vulnerable populations more agency in fiction, Japanese science-fiction allows vulnerable and minority populations control over environmental disasters often caused by technological means, leaving them with the ability to prevent further destruction, and the ability to become heroes for themselves and others. In this paper, I will discuss how agency is depicted within vulnerable populations both in nonfiction and fictional texts, as well as how science fiction allows us to contextualize emotions regarding environmental disasters through the empowerment of these characters

    Yersinia pestis Adhesins’ Role in Yop Delivery to Neutrophils and Bacterial Survival Using the Neutrophil-like Cell Line HL-60

    iv, 24 p.Yersinia pestis is a gram-negative, bacillus bacteria that is the causative agent of the bubonic plague. This strain of Yersinia has been responsible for killing millions of people in history, most notably during the Justinian plague where 25% of the European population was killed. The deadly nature of Y. pestis can be traced to the mechanisms it utilizes. Y. pestis uses a type 3 secretion system (T3SS) to confer cytotoxicity by delivering Yersinia outer proteins (YOPs) to host cells via its needle-like apparatus. In addition to YOPs, Yersinia Pestis has adhesins that attach on the outer membrane and help in docking onto the host cell. The goal of this study was to understand the role of adhesins in the delivery of YOPs to a neutrophil-like cell line HL-60s. The adhesins of interest include Adhesion and Invasin locus (Ail), Plasminogen activator (Pla), and pH-6 antigen (PsaA). This study utilized fluorescence microscopy as well as image cytometry to analyze the effect these adhesins had on YOP delivery. The experiments conducted in this study showed that the adhesins had a positive effect on YOP delivery while having a diminished effect in the presence of serum. Results from this study and previous studies done on the role of adhesins in YOP delivery serve as basis for future studies regarding genetic manipulation and determining critical pathways that can provide clues on how to control Yersinia Pestis

    Limitations of Mediated-Interference and Potentiation When Pairing Neutral Flavor Cues

    31 p.Mediated conditioning is the phenomenon in which the elicited representation of a stimulus can modify conditioning even in the absence of the stimulus itself. This occurs when the representation of this stimulus is elicited by another, previously associated stimulus. Kwok et al. (2016) found that pairing two flavors (F1 and F2) together twice allows for mediated interference, wherein the representation of a stimulus (F2) interferes with the learned aversion between a target taste and an illness. Whereas pairing two flavors together six times results in mediated potentiation, wherein this aversion to the target taste is made stronger by the representation of F2. I sought to replicate the results of this study by closely following their procedure and using different flavors for the target and interfering stimuli. I also added control groups that did not receive an interfering flavor during conditioning. Upon the beginning of flavor training, all rats were split into one of six groups (2-P, 2-U, 2-C, 6-P, 6-U, or 6-C). These rats were given either 2 presentations of the cue flavors together or on different days, or 6 presentations of the cue flavors together or on different days. During conditioning, rats received an almond-flavored solution, one of the cue flavors or water, and then illness. No reliable pattern of mediated interference or potentiation was found; all groups drank very similar amounts of almond. However, the varying results of the interference flavor test show that the rats did indeed learn an aversion to the flavor consumed between the almond solution and illness on conditioning day. From these results I concluded that mediated interference and potentiation cannot occur in a serial-conditioning design when the two cue flavors used are neutral stimuli

    Mitigation of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis in Rats via Augmented Immunomodulation of Endogenous Marrow-Derived Stem Cells

    iv, 34 p.Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are an extremely common injury in young, often female, athletes. Whether reconstruction surgery is performed or not, ACL ruptures are a particularly devasting injury that leads to alterations in gait biomechanics. The pain, inflammation, and stress on the articular cartilage of the knee that accompanies gait after an ACL rupture is why these injuries are the leading precursor to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). PTOA is a subcategory of osteoarthritis that occurs when a traumatic injury leads to deterioration of the tissue, ligaments, or bones of a joint. The aim of this study was to use DigiGait analyzing software to determine if the use of a stem cell mobilizer, AMD3100, and an anti-inflammatory enzyme, indolenine 2,3-diozxygenase (IDO), could ameliorate the risk of PTOA induced by a non-invasive anterior tibial subluxation ACL injury in rodents. Female Lewis rats underwent an isolated ACL rupture before being assigned to one of four possible treatment groups: Saline & empty liposomes (control), Saline & IDO (IDO only), AMD & empty liposomes (AMD only), and AMD & IDO. Preliminary findings suggest that the therapeutic combination of AMD3100 and IDO provides an observable difference in returning gait biomechanics to pre-injury conditions. This study identified IDO having effects in the acute timeframe by augmenting the immune cascade after increased inflammation. The effects of AMD3100 are seen in the post-acute timeframe to promote articular cartilage prevention associated with improved gait biomechanics compared to untreated controls. Research regarding AMD3100 and IDO therapeutic treatment could ultimately reduce the severity or onset of PTOA in humans, which would decrease the need for total knee replacement surgeries
