Three Years as a Podiatric Medical Assistant
No full text9 p.I spent the better part of three years working as a medical assistant at Red Cedar Podiatry, a
single-provider podiatry clinic in Lansing, Michigan. Podiatry is the specialty responsible for
foot and ankle healthcare. It intersects osteopathic, dermatological, neurological, and other
biological systems–to each of which I gained direct exposure. Additionally, this opportunity
exposed me to multiple aspects of the medical industry–extending well past direct patient care–to
coordination of insurance coverage, collaboration between providers, preparation for outpatient
procedures, and more. Furthermore, I developed relationships with both patients and colleagues
that I will cherish for years to come. In light of my education at Kalamazoo College, paired with
my personal/professional aspirations, I gained valuable experience affording me invaluable
insight into my path toward being the surgeon I hope to be someday soon
K Student's Experiences With the School-to-Prison Pipeline in Their Public High Schools

in which the experiences of current Kalamazoo College
students varied during their high school years, as well
as the extent to which this variation relates to the
surveillance and policing measures present within their
respective high schools. Through twelve structured
interviews, ranging between 10-30 minutes long, I
determined that Kalamazoo College students had
significantly different experiences with the school-to-prison
pipeline and police surveillance in high school.
Furthermore, my research shows that the variability of
student experiences with the school-to-prison pipeline is
extremely dependent on their race and/or ethnicity.
Overall, predominately white schools showed less
surveillance and police presence. This trend stood in
stark contrast to my findings related to schools whose
student bodies consisted primarily of students of color,
which reported significantly higher rates of surveillance

My Experience Collecting Seeds of Native Wildflowers in the Kalamazoo Area

often threatened by many external factors, decreasing their rates
of survival and successful reproduction. During the chilly fall
months of 2021, I collected seeds from a variety of native
wildflowers under the guidance of Dr. Ann Fraser, a professor in
the biology department here at Kalamazoo College. We collected
seeds in order to prepare them for planting in the spring,
drastically improving their chances of survival and benefitting
their ecosystems. Most of the seeds that I collected were from
areas on Kalamazoo College’s campus such as the wildflower
sanctuary outside of the Dow Science Center, and the garden in

Kalamazoo College Student Voter Turnout and How to Increase Student Political Engagement
No full text67 p.This research project investigates the best way for Kalamazoo College to increase its student voter turnout rate. Kalamazoo College students voted at their highest levels in the 2018 Midterm and 2020 Presidential Elections since the National Study for Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) began tracking student turnout rates in 2012. Since young people tend to vote at lower rates than older people, it is important for colleges and universities to motivate students to vote to increase their engagement and representation in US political systems. This study aims to find out how the best ways to promote voting among K students. To test the hypothesis that K Votes has increased student turnout among K Students, NSLVE data was analyzed, and K was compared to similar institutions and geographical locations. Voter mobilization literature was reviewed, and 18 K students were interviewed about what they think are the best ways for students to develop their political identities and vote. The results indicate that voter mobilization efforts by K Votes have had a positive impact on the student turnout rate, since K Votes targets first years through First Year Forums and voter registration drives. Importantly, K Votes must improve outreach efforts to Asian, Black, and Hispanic students and inform all students on how to vote while they are on study abroad

My Internship Reflection as an Embedded Engineering
No full text5 p.My internship was with The Method Part, one of the smaller engineering corporations within Erlangen. It has engineering and consulting departments and I worked at the engineering department. There are almost 50 engineers, however, there were only 5 people in the office due to the COVID pandemic. Most of them work remotely. My goal was to use what I learned at Kalamazoo College and discover my strengths and weaknesses in my work ethic, programming skills, and communication. I have taken computer science classes since my freshman year of college; I knew how to program but did not know how the things I learned would be applied within a workplace. It was as if I had memorized a cooking recipe but never stood in the kitchen and did not know how the taste would be

While the webpage includes data on homelessness, fatal police shootings, and COVID- 19 vaccinations, this paper goes more in-depth into the data science principles behind the webpage, and addresses broader issues related to community safety. This project is an example of how data science can be used as a tool to help build safer communities
"What's the choice? You have no choice" : Charter Schools Marketing Better Education by Selling Discipline and Choice and Its Effects on Public Education
No full textvi, 28 p.Charter schools have been a booming industry in recent years, especially in the city of Chicago, where there are advertisements marketed all around the city from the public trains and buses to billboards on the highway. Charter schools have also been a part of bigger conversations that deal with education reform and the debate if public· schools are good for children or are public schools harming them. These conversations have become very prevalent in the media so much so that the ABC sitcom, Abbott Elementary, tackled the charter school conversation by showing an exaggerated scene of charter schools publicly shaming public schools in their advertisements. Although charter schools seem to be harmless, there are issues that charter schools hide behind the discipline, as they use discipline as a way to "straighten children up" in order for them to be prepared for college and society. Discipline becomes an issue when there is a constant backlash on the harsh punishment given to students over small issues, like tardiness. Charter schools also are key when looking into the privatization of education. Who deserves a good education and why are public schools not worthy of the title of "good" education? Charter schools using their tools to market brings in more enrollment, leading to less enrollment and negative light shined on public schools. It leads to many children who depend on their neighborhood public schools not receiving i the education they deserve because of the lack of funding, or the closing of their schools
