    x, 35 p.The author introduces an original collection of poems by reflecting on the K experience and influential poems, and writes ”My SIP in its current state is a different creature than what I imagined and envisioned it would be when writing my proposal. Nevertheless, the process of it has been wonderfully cathartic and enlightening to me. My original title when I submitted my proposal was The Vibrance In Between, which sounds really ostentatious in retrospect and not what the collection evolved into. In the context of a collection about the nonbinariness of life and people, I think it would be a great title, but that is too flashy for the images of crusted ash, warmed glue, and clattering bones that fuel Ill-Fire. My SIP advisor, Scott Bade, offered that up as a possible title for the collection because he really liked the phrase in ‘to be set on,’ which was originally named ‘on ill-fire.’ I loved that phrase, a play on ill-will, but I didn’t want that poem to be as entangled with the title of the collection as I thought it would be if they had the same/very similar titles. I think the title of the poem being ‘to be set on’ also benefits that poem by adding another layer of unjust violence, as if the poem is being attacked out of nowhere without cause: mimicking, also, the violence against queer/trans folks. When looking back at the questions I raised in my SIP proposal, I do feel that I answered them- what does it mean for something to burn, what does it mean to burn for someone or something, what causes it, what does it do to a mind and how is that any different from what it does to a forest, how do we cope with burning, how do we revel in it. I think I answered them in a different way than I had imagined. And I think that is because I let myself think more like a poet and less like a scholar.

    My Time Spent Working at the Delano No-Till farm and How it has Changed my View of Biology and Life Itself

    1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HI’ve always enjoyed gardening, so when I found an internship on a No-till farm and read the description, it sounded like it would be a fun, educational experience. While I was there, I was able to enjoy nature, get in a satisfying day’s work, and sometimes bring home farm fresh produce. I learned a lot about No-till farming practices and the reasons behind them and have fallen so in love I spent the winter thinking about how to apply what I learned to my parents’ garden this summer. This experience, along with a great book on getting a farm started, was not purely academic in its teachings, however. While at Delano farm, I realized that I was not viewing nature as if I was a part of it, but instead as though I was somehow separate, observing from above. This realization led to me changing how I view nature and the study of biology. That simple change in perspective has made my studies more interesting, and the outdoors far more beautiful, if not also a little scarier.Kalamazoo College. Department of Biology.     A National Assessment of Racial Disparities in Prehospital Pain Management by Paramedics

    viii, 53 p.The United States has a pervasive history of racism ingrained into the fabrics of many American institutions, including healthcare. The goal of this project is to utilize statistical methods to examine nationwide racial trends in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as they relate to predicting whether a person is given pain medication. This project first explores the history of medical racism, then discusses the elements that make EMS a unique and challenging field to research. The bulk of this project uses the National Emergency Services Information System (NEMSIS) data for 2020 (N = 43,488,767) that is filtered by many different variables, creating an analytic sample consisting of only EMS responses to 911 calls by ground transport ALS Paramedic teams, and focusing on patients who report a pain score greater than 5 out of 10. Using that sample (N = 2,063,679), I used logistic regression models to find if race changes a patient’s likelihood to receive any pain medication or to receive opiates. This process was repeated for each US Census Division to search for any potential disparities. This research found little to no meaningful statistically significant results on a nationwide scale, but did expose many fundamental limitations with the NEMSIS dataset, including unexplainable skewness and a substantial portion of missing data

    Attraction, mobility, and preference by Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae) to microbially-mediated volatile emissions from two species of fungi in stored grain

    xii, 66 p.Little research has linked how specific fungal species affect the behavior of the stored product pest Lasioderma serricorne. Enhanced knowledge about attraction to microbially-produced volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) may be used to manipulate insect behavior. Our goals were to 1) determine the frequency with which L.serricorne vectors microbes in the postharvest environment, 2) isolate, and culture one fungal morphotype, 3) characterize the volatile emissions from grain inoculated by the fungal morphotype (A. flavus or Fusarium verticillioides) compared to unmanipulated and sanitized grain, and 4) understand how MVOCs from the morphotype affects mobility, attraction, and preference by L. serricorne. Headspace collection revealed that the Fusarium verticillioides- and A. flavus-inoculated grain produced significantly different volatiles compared to sanitized grain or the positive control. Cahnges in MVOC emissions affected close-range foraging during an Ethovision assay, with a greater frequency of entering and spending time in a small zone with kernels inoculated with A. flavus compared to other treatments. In the release-recapture assay, MVOCs were found to be attractive to L. serricorne at a long distance in commercial pitfall traps. While there was no preference shown among semiochemical stimuli in a still-air, four-way olfactometer, it is possible that methodological limitations prevent robust interpretation from this assay. Finally, we found that L. serricorne readily vectored microbes in the postharvest environment after dispersing to novel food patches, but the amount of microbes imparted decreased with the dispersal period. Overall, our study suggests that MVOCs are important for close- and long-range orientation of L. serricorne during foraging, and that MVOCs may have the potential for inclusion in behaviorally-based management tactics for this species

    Modeling Vibrating String Wave Forms

    50 p.This project is aimed to construct a simplified, but justifiable model, for vibrating strings so that we are able to explore questions related to musical instruments. We begin with solutions to the 1-dimensional wave equation with fixed, and later, mixed boundary conditions given by Fourier coefficients. For the mixed boundary conditions, the eigen-values are unsolvable, so instead we find a numerical approximation for the solution. Then, we investigate the energy and distribution of energies of each solution. Finally, we construct a mathematical model for the musical performance technique, vibrato. The exact solution of this mathematical model is discussed by Gaffour in his papers ”Analytical Method for Solving the One Dimensional Wave Equation with Moving Boundary" [3] and “Vibrating String with a Variable Length" [7]. In our paper, we adopted an adiabatic approximation [15] in order to obtain an approximate solution with a simpler form than the exact solution given by Gaffour. Additionally, justification is provided that our adiabatic approximation is within good reason of the exact solution given by Gaffour

Her project explores the relationship between found object, sculpture, and built structure. Zawacki creates pieces that explore an object’s function and materiality by creating sculptures using traditional building materials, and occasionally coupling built sculpting with found objects from building projects in the Kalamazoo area. Zawacki implements the use of mold making, material manipulation, sewing, and object placement within her artistic and curation process. Through her SIP, Zawacki hopes to deconstruct assumptions surrounding what is considered Sculpture and encourage the public to view architectural forms and construction salvage as Art

    Vessels of the Gods : Women’s Bodies, Sexuality, and Suffering within Greco-Roman Prophecy

    ii, 45 p.With theology, religion, and belief, prophecy is often present at the forefront. Yet, often in sociological, religious, and historical studies of women’s divination, the focus is not on the women themselves, but rather on the overarching power dynamics they are speaking their prophecies into. While this is an important and necessary look into women’s divination, it often decenters the female diviners and their experiences, instead reading into how they never truly gained any power at all. While this paper does take the necessary viewpoint of these power struggles and dynamics and is not quick to dismiss them, I will attempt to re-center the divination and experiences of female diviners in Ancient Greece, and how they ultimately suffer in a sphere where they should be able to gain some authority. Throughout history, despite religious authority falling so often on men, women have often been deemed vessels of the gods or spirits –– being spoken through, giving their prophecies. Women are the perfect vessels, not only for the gods and other beings to possess, but also to display human suffering; as a group marginalized by society but still a more relatable display to Greek men than slaves, women’s natural suffering and lack of control was the perfect vessel to showcase the same feelings that mankind felt towards the gods

    38 p.Described by Hitler as the perfect German woman, Leni Riefenstahl was one of the best-known directors of National Socialism. During the Nazi era, Riefenstahl was a director of films that promoted the message and reputation of the Nazi party. Her documentaries about the Reichspartaitage were considered influential propaganda. Her feature films, which she made before and after the Nazi era, have technical, substantive and emotional similarities to their documentaries. Through an analysis of her first film The Blue Light (1932) and her most famous documentary, Triumph of the Will (1935) a stylistic continuity between these two films is outlined and shown. It is also described how Riefenstahl used film technology and editing to manipulate the audience

    The Effect of Temperature Fluctuations on the Sex Ratio of the Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia), a Species with Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination

    v, 34 p.Sex determination in vertebrates can occur via genetics, as found in humans, or based on the environment. In the most prevalent form of environmental determination of sex (ESD), the temperature of the environment during development decides the sex of the individual. This is known as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). This phenomenon has been studied in reptiles and fishes using constant temperature treatments, but the effects of fluctuating temperatures remain underexplored. Fluctuating temperature treatments are more ecologically relevant and are known to create significant differences in organisms’ physiology. Therefore, it is important to understand how a fluctuating temperature regime interacts with the sex determination process in TSD species. As climate change continues to increase mean global temperature and temperature variance, TSD species are more at risk than ever. This study aims to unpack the ways in which diel fluctuating temperatures impact the sex ratio (and other physiological traits) of a TSD fish, Menidia menida. I exposed M. menidia to three different temperature treatments (constant: 28°C, small fluctuations: 28±2°C, and large fluctuations: 28±4°C) and compared the resulting sex ratios, length-at-age, and CTmax (upper thermal tolerance) values. When reared under fluctuating temperatures, the fish produced a higher proportion of females than the constant temperature treatment. They also had higher CTmax and lower length-at-age values. The results demonstrate that the effect of temperature fluctuations on M. menidia is significant, and that future research should account for fluctuating temperature regimes
