On Finding My Niche: Scenic and Projection Design for Unzipped by Rebecca Chan ‘22
70 p.Like many other students of creative studies, I deal with an immense amount of imposter syndrome, and I still frequently debate with myself about whether or not I am truly good at what I do. However, I know for a fact that my work on Unzipped was incredible. I did a fantastic job on my projections, and my scenic design provided a beautiful playing space for my images, as well as elevating Rebecca’s story spatially in a really interesting way. I worked harder on this production than any other production I have ever participated in, and it was nothing short of wonderful to sit in the audience of the final show in our run, knowing that I played a major role in creating the world of the play. I have undoubtedly found my theatrical niche in projection design, and I cannot wait to continue growing my skill set in this area in future productions at Kalamazoo College and beyond
Medical Scribing in the Emergency Department
iii, 20 p.Medical scribing has become a way for pre-medical students to gain clinical experience in different settings of healthcare. This work allows students to shadow physicians and observe real patient-doctor interactions while also providing efficiency within the busy realm of healthcare. This paper provides a personal overview of the role of a medical scribe in the emergency department including required training, shift tasks, and specific cases that were observed within 200+ hours working as a medical scribe in the summer of 2022. A literature review is also provided that pertains to past and present gender, socioeconomic, and racial disparities within the emergency department. This review infers implications for how these inequities factor in for overall patient health and urges for further research in this field

Resistenza Sulla Tela Umana : Uncovering Italy’s Tattoo Obsession
vi, 27 p.Italy holds the epicenter and government of the Catholic Church, where many religious and social aspects are heavily influenced by Roman Catholic traditions. By analyzing historical, anthropological, and archaeological evidence to help trace back the history of tattoos during early modern times allows for a deeper meaning to this form of art—one that shy’s away from its stereotypes that associate it with criminality. Furthermore, by understanding how tattoos came to be so prominent in Italy’s modern day, we can pave the way to a new understanding and approach to tattoo culture. A commonly unknown fact about Italy, despite its conservative background, is that it’s the leading country with the highest number of people with tattoos. With historical context, it is easier to understand why the older generations look down upon people with tattoos and associate them with crime, violence, and no education. The stereotype branches from religious views; Catholic and typical conservative morals hold the country back from progressing on social, political, and gendered issues. However, since Italy experienced radicalism and a shift into liberalism during the late 1800’s, tattoos were being seen more in the public eye. This integrated project will be a catalyst to understand Italian’s approach and obsession with tattoos. I studied abroad in Rome, Italy for the 2021 Fall quarter and left with a new way of thinking, living, learning, and viewing the world. In writing about my experience, documenting pictures, and researching on the history of tattoos in Italy, I have been able to confront the structures and norms of a country that values religion so highly. Being able to place myself in a country where art is a part of its history, I noticed that tattoos aren’t necessarily considered. Tattoos, in my eyes, are like a cultural resistance to the failures of the sociopolitical agenda in Italy
Predicting Postseason Success in Major League Baseball Through Econometric Practices
v, 33 p.This research aims to use econometric methods to determine which regular season statistics are determinants of postseason success in Major League Baseball (MLB). Millions of viewers watch the MLB Playoffs on a yearly basis, as they enjoy the unpredictable nature of the postseason, as there always seems to be at least one team that surprises the country and takes the pennant at the end of October. The ability to identify a couple of statistics from the regular season that could predict success in the postseason would allow teams to know what areas to focus on during the regular season. The author personally created and organized a data set from various sources, as no data sources compiled its data in a consistent and downloadable manner1. The data set that was created consists of statistics from the 2000-2021 seasons (22 years) in which they transformed into panel data. The variables used consist of eleven independent variables from the defensive and offensive side of the game including two variables that deal with outside elements such as players’ salaries and home attendance, and four dependent variables representing each round of the Playoffs marked with dummy variables. Using three separate models to avoid multicollinearity, the author utilized logit regression models to explore relationships between regular season statistics and postseason success. It was determined that On Base plus Slugging Percentage (OPS), Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched (WHIP), and Regular Season Wins (RSW) from the regular season have the strongest relationship to making it far into the postseason in Major League Baseball
Investigation into the Reaction Kinetics of the Hydrolysis of Molnupiraivir to 4N-hydroxycytidine
vii, 23 p.Throughout the COVID-19 outbreak many new pharmaceuticals have been developed to help stop the spread and treat patients suffering from the virus. One of these potential drug candidates is molnupiravir. Molnupiravir is a compound that is hydrolyzed in the body to its product 4N-hydroxycytidine which prevents replication of COVID-19 in cells by inhibiting RNA virus replication. Because molnupiravir was only recently discovered there is little information regarding the degradation of the compound. In this study, various hydrolysis reactions of molnupiravir were conducted under varying pHs and temperatures to determine different values including the rate constant, half-life, and activation energy of MOL. To obtain these values, samples were extracted from the hydrolysis reaction. The samples were then analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to acquire the concentrations of molnupiravir and 4N-hydroxyciditine in the reaction. This allowed for the calculation of the reaction rate constants through a nonlinear regression program and therefore find the half-life and activation energy. The pKa values from the protonated form to neutral from of 2.0 and neutral form to deprotonated form of 10.5 were also found by measuring the UV/VIS spectra of molnupiravir at varying pH values and analyzing the data with the same nonlinear regression program. It was found that as the pH increases, the rate constant of the hydrolysis reaction also increases. Important equations were also determined that made it possible to calculate the activation energy of 90 kJ/mol and the rate constants and lifetime of molnupiravir at specific pHs and temperatures. These values are of interest to understand the properties of molnupiravir to make more information available to scientists who study molnupiravir or similar compounds in the future
The effects of nutrients and physical land decimation on plant-herbivore interactions and food web dynamics in grasslands
v, 30 p.Plant damage through plant-herbivore interactions and the presence of phytopathogenic fungi is responsible for shaping community dynamics across numerous ecosystems. Interactions between plants, herbivores, and fungi encompass a fundamental relationship in generating animal biomass from light energy. Modern agricultural practices and the prevalence of fertilizer usage can modify these relationships through plant trait tradeoffs, where there has been an increase in growth-oriented traits at the expense of defense-oriented traits. To further complicate these interactions, avian predators, such as birds, can also modify these relationships through the regulation of insect herbivory. In this study, there are two experiments to examine these relationships. In the first, plant damage from herbivores and phytopathogenic fungi was recorded to observe if nutrient treatments had an impact on damage in two focal species, Rumex acetosella L. (Red sorrel) and Asclepias syriaca L. (Common milkweed). Treatments influenced damage from herbivory in both focal species but showed little evidence of their influence on fungi. In the second experiment, artificial caterpillars were employed to observe if avian predation was influenced by physical land disturbance and different types of artificial larvae. Both disturbance and the type of larvae influenced levels of predation. This study suggests an important linkage within the tripartite relationships between nutrients, plant-herbivore interactions, and predation. The importance of these interactions highlights the necessity of incorporating multi-factor approaches to make more effective predictions about the future
