Experiences of Elementary-Aged English Learners & Their Families Due to the Remote Learning Conditions Caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic
v, 37 p.This paper focuses on the experiences of elementary aged English learners during their time in remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on the reasons for which English language learners in the United States might have had a more difficult time transitioning and participating in remote learning in comparison to their English-proficient peers. Based on interviews conducted (with elementary English learners, their parents, and their teachers), online blogs (ran by local community organizations and teachers), and others’ research on this topic, it was concluded that English learners had a difficult time during remote learning due to a lack of devices and internet connection, limitations due to family and home situations, and culture and language barriers between the families and schools. There were also some positives for English learners and their families that came out of these learning conditions such as a better understanding of the academic curriculum from the parents’ perspective and an increase in technological skills and resources for English learners. This information is valuable since English learners make up 10% of the K-12 students in the United States, and that number continues to rise every year. These students may have already been falling behind their peers in pre-pandemic times. It is important to take note of their experiences during the pandemic to assure that these students are receiving additional support, to ensure that they do not continue to feel left behind and frustrated like many did during remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Identifying positive brain development from bonding between infants and caregivers and implementing programs to achieve these results for high-risk infants.
10 p.How can caregiving facilities ensure that children and infants are provided with an environment for optimal brain development? Many childcare facilities aim to offer a safe but stimulating environment; they are equipped with toys, tactile experiences, and educational products. In addition, staff are trained and vetted to provide care to children. However, there is another component that needs to be addressed in ensuring care facilities provide environments for optimal brain development. Research has shown that an important component of cognitive development in children requires bonding to occur between caregivers and children. For most children, this crucial bonding is often established between mother and child, but children who are in single parent homes and are shuffled between caregivers may miss out on the attachment opportunities. Bonding requires regular interactions with specific individuals, however the time period to establish attachment is flexible. Bonding may occur between daycare workers and children provided there are consistent individuals who are prepared to engage in concentrated interactions. Attachment requires interactive dialogue/play with specific individuals over a period of time. In many facilities, constant staff turnover and scheduling convenience can impact children’s ability to bond with caregivers. This paper highlights current research on the importance of children’s interaction with consistent individuals/caregivers, and the brain development that results from bonding. It also details how local programs designed to improve bonding opportunities for children can help promote this brain development

The Galapagos cormorant is a flightless bird that was
found without the Cux1 gene, making it flightless.
The Galapagos cormorant is how researchers found the
four target proteins to focus on in ADPKD research.
ADPKD is caused by mutation in PKD1 or PKD2 gene.
PKD1 and PKD2 encodes a product called polycystin-1
(PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2).
Mutations in PKD1 or PKD2 can cause abnormalities
in fluid secretion, apoptosis, gene expression, and cell
polarity.
A gene called Patched1 is studied through the lens of
ADPKD to determine how it affects the disease.
Multiple mice with different gene expressions were used
to measure Cux1 expression and cilia length via
immunofluorescence and western blots in their kidney
tissue to detect Patched1 proteins.
Primary cilia is crucial because it is within the Hedgehog
pathway (Hh) where this signaling pathway regulates cell
proliferation, tissue homeostasis, cell development.
The disruption of the primary cilium will cause diseases
called ciliopathies.

My Experience Interning for a Tech Start-Up
5 p.Throughout this summer, I was given the opportunity to work with a start-up company called VMET(Virtual Music Ensemble Technologies), working on their new software suite called Opus. Due to the small size and start-up nature of VMET, I was able to assume a lot more direct responsibility and ownership of the project than I may have at a larger corporation. My official goal for this summer was to implement as much functionality to the desktop application as possible, ideally getting the desktop application into a prototype state for investors. From a more academic perspective, my goals were to learn how to code using React Native, learn how to use several AWS(Amazon Web Services) cloud-based services, and get a feel for what it's like to work on a project with a larger scope

Modal Branching Temporalism : An Alternative to Lewisian Genuine Realism
76 p.Possible worlds theory has been wildly successful in contemporary logic and metaphysics ever since Kripke (1959) proved the completeness and consistency of modal logic using possible worlds semantics. According to possible worlds semantics, a proposition P is possibly true if and only if P is true in some possible world and necessarily true if and only if P is true in every possible world. Possible worlds semantics have led to great strides in modal logic. However, possible worlds semantics leaves open the metaphysical question of what exactly possible worlds are. In the last 50 years numerous metaphysical theories have been proposed to explain the nature of possible worlds. Of the theories of possible worlds that have been proposed to date, I believe Lewis’ (1986) Genuine Modal Realism (Genuine Realism for short) is the most plausible because of its incredible explanatory power combined with the compelling arguments he offers against other theories of possible worlds. Despite the benefits, there are significant costs associated with Genuine Realism and due to these costs, I believe there is a better theory of modality available. The goal of this project is to introduce my own theory of possible worlds, called Modal Branching Temporalism, and compare the costs and benefits of it with those of Genuine Realism with the goal of showing that Modal Branching Temporalism is preferable to Genuine Realism. It is worth noting that the goal of this project is not to argue that Modal Branching Temporalism is the most plausible theory of modality or even the most plausible theory of possible worlds. Instead, in this paper I am specifically arguing that it is more plausible than Genuine Realism and leave these further claims for future work. This means that my discussion focuses mainly on Genuine Realism and other theories of modality/possible worlds are only brought in when they are important for understanding either Genuine Realism or Modal Branching Temporalism

30 p.During the 2019-20 academic year, a student organization was re-formed to create the annual Boiling Pot yearbook, after last being published in 2005. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020 brought production of the yearbook to a halt. Complications due to the pandemic meant that the yearbook was not finished or expanded to include the 2020-21 year. Blank pages in the yearbook illustrate the disruption caused to student life on campus.

New Invaders to Hardwood Forests: Discovering Jumping Worms (Amynthas) at the Lillian Anderson Arboretum
v, 37 p.As detritivores and soil aerators, earthworms can be beneficial for gardening and composting. Alongside these benefits, earthworms can negatively impact forest ecosystems by ridding the soil of organic matter and nutrients. In the Great Lakes region, all earthworms are nonnative but jumping worms (genus Amynthas) are recent invaders that are spreading rapidly and impacting soil health. I mapped the abundance and distribution of earthworm types at the Lillian Anderson Arboretum (LAA) in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and recorded soil characteristics in sampled plots. I documented six different types of earthworms. Amynthas was found in one area of human impact and was associated with deeper litter depths than was Lumbricus, the most common genus; no other soil variables (litter type; soil temperature, moisture, pH; abundance of macroinvertebrates) differed between plot where the two genera were found. The presence and expansion of Amynthas should continue to be monitored to determine if and how it is impacting forest ecosystems
Dosing Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts with Diesel Particulate Matter Causes an Increase in Oxidative Stress and Decrease in Collagen
vi, 39 p.Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is a major component of declining air quality and can be especially dangerous for those working in areas with increased levels of DPM, such as miners or construction workers. Given the increasing presence of DPM in daily life, particularly in urban environments, it is important to analyze the effect of this pollution. In this study, I looked at the effects of DPM on gene expression in human dermal fibroblasts. I analyzed viability of fibroblasts dosed with DPM using lactate Dehydrogenase Activity (LDH) and MTT assays. I then analyzed gene expression changes in genes related to antioxidant stress responses, collagen production, and inflammation. I found that DPM exposure is related to an increase in antioxidant stress response from genes such as NAD(P)H dehydrogenase [quinone] 1 (NQO1) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2), as well as a decrease in collagen producing genes such as Collagen type 1, alpha 1 (COL1A1). My results suggest that DPM exposure can induce oxidative stress and weaken the skin through decreased collagen production
The Impact of Chlamydia Infection on Postnatal Health Outcomes: Maternal Prenatal C. Trachomatis Infection Increases Risk of NICU Admission
v, 24 p.The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a specialized nursery unit in a hospital that focuses on care for infants that often are born with infection, complications, or other medical conditions. Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. This STI has the potential to damage the female reproductive system and cause numerous poor birth outcomes if left untreated. C. trachomatis often has little to no symptoms which allows it to pass between individuals easily and unknowingly. There are higher rates of Chlamydia in people Of Color compared to White people. Racial disparity in the healthcare system has been evident throughout the United States. Infant mortality rates among the black community are significantly higher than in the white community. To understand the impact of Chlamydia infection on NICU admission, a retrospective analysis was conducted examining 35,755 birth records for women in Kalamazoo County. Biostatistical analyses were conducted to examine the impact of Chlamydia on the study population using 25 variables. Overall, there was an increased risk of NICU admission when a mother was infected with C. trachomatis. The percentage of women with a low-birth-weight infant, a preterm birth, and an infant admitted to the NICU were shown to significantly increase when a mother was infected with Chlamydia. When the data was stratified by race, the factors that contribute to poor birth outcomes remain similar suggesting that once an infant is in the Kalamazoo healthcare system, there is no further racial disparity in admission to the NICU
