The Influence of Social Media on the Stock Market

    No full text
iii, 18 p.This paper aims to examine social media's influence on the stock market. Social media has grown exponentially, becoming a part of everyday life. This paper will dive into the role social media has on stock market activity and how the importance of social media continues to influence it. Key topics researched include the history and growth of social media and the stock market. The influences behind social media and what makes it so influential. The effects of social media on stock market activity. Businesses’ use of social media and the economic impact of stock market changes. I will conclude with a reflection and a forecast on social media and the stock market

Host plant selection and larval performance of the endangered Mitchell’s satyr butterfly (Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii) on two Carex species

    No full text
1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HMitchell’s satyr butterfly (MSB) is a federally endangered butterfly extant to Michigan and Indiana. Propagation programs are a critical component for the survival of this species. Carex stricta is the traditional host plant used for propagation rearing despite the existence of many Carex species in MSB’s natural fen habitat. To expand this knowledge, I examined 1st instar larvae (caterpillar) host plant preference, development, and survivorship.Kalamazoo College. Department of Biology. Diebold Symposium, 202

A Study of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Recovery

    No full text
v, 20 p.My experiential work that I conducted for my Senior Individualized Project consisted of assisting chairside in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This work took place during the summer of 2022, before entering the fall trimester. During this work experience I was trained in forehanded techniques used between surgeons and their assistants. Also, I was trained in the sterilization lab to run an ultrasonic and an autoclave, which gave me a better understanding of the5hroughputt required to run a practice such as Dr. Bonine’s office. The biggest takeaway I gained from this experience was through my work with platelet rich fibrin (PRF). In most of the cases I assisted on, some form of a PRF was used. Since I was a trainee all summer, I typically assisted on easier cases like wisdom teeth removal. Since I am most familiar with this technique, I chose to review articles specifically related to PRF utilization in wisdom teeth extractions. Through my work experience as well as the literature I reviewed, I was able to learn about leading post-operative healing techniques like platelet rich fibrin and its clinical applications. Through this experience I have gained a ton of valuable information that will help in my journey through dental school, and wherever my path takes me afterwards

An Analysis of the Linguistic Situation in Martinique

    No full text
vi, 61 p.In Martinique, two languages coexist. French–the standardized official language of the Lesser Antilles island–is the primary language of communication and it occupies formal domains. Martinican Creole is reserved for use with family and friends. In this Senior Integrated Project, the author discusses social attitudes towards each language using data obtained from interviews she conducted with a few residents of Martinique. She examines language planning and policy of the territory, taking into consideration its political status as an overseas region and department of France. Additionally, she compares the linguistic situation of Martinique to that of Jamaica, her home country. Keywords: language planning & policy, diglossia, creoles, French creoles, sociolinguistic

We Need Access to Mental Health Programs, and We Need it Now!

    No full text
1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HThe US has provided scarce resources to combat mental health in the past, but with the impact of the pandemic and other external factors, the population of people needing those resources are increasing expediential, especially in criminal court systems. With no solution to decrease the rate of repetitive offenders in sight, multiple court judges have decided to look beyond the classical punishment (incarnation) and implement alternative diversion plans to combat this issue. As of 2008, Kalamazoo County has established their own mental health recovery court. The Kalamazoo MHRC aims to reduce recidivism in the Kalamazoo community.Kalamazoo College. Summer in Software

    No full text
5 p.This summer I was offered the opportunity to work at an HR software company called Workday, which is located in Pleasanton, California. When looking the company up, you might run into the super jargony explanation of what they do like, “Workday is a cloud-based software vendor that specializes in human capital management and financial management applications.”, but to sum that all up, they pretty much focus on creating a hub that allows specific companies/schools to access key information quickly about their finances and overall company health. My role there was a Software Application Development Intern with the FlySwatters team, a scrum team within the Time Tracking team

Three-dimensional Illustration and Installation of Pollen Spores Represented through Ceramics

    No full text
23 p.This series of works uses dimensionality, scale, and material to exaggerate a biologically important structure, pollen. Pollination in angiosperms is crucial to many food systems, including ours, as well as sustainability in ecosystems. Agriculture depends on the transfer of pollen and fertilization to produce fruits and food. Variation of shapes and surface textures serves as a function of evolution to specific flowering plant’s needs structures. Pollen is thought of in terms of allergies rather than the contribution to our natural world such as pollination. At a closer look, pollen grains under 100x-1000x light magnification or placed under an electron microscope have fascinating textures and shapes unseen by a normal eye. The exine, or outermost surface of the grains, is composed of various furrows, and lumina, and are quite sculptural. Many models of pollen grains expressing these textures are created through computer software, continuing the two-dimensional format which is reductionist. This stylizing can undermine the organic shapes and rendering due to perfect modeling and undermine the organic forms. Through a ceramic rendition, this thesis explores the sculpting of pollen grain in a three-dimensional form to capture the imperfect. The use of clay as a medium allows for manipulation and illustration of the pollen spores. The scale of the sculptures is exaggerated to be accessible and intriguing to the natural eye but is often overlooked. Using images from internet databases (due to accessibility to an electron microscope) and published research as an influence and inspiration, the ceramic models are not replicas according to scale and detail but rather a rendition with artistic liberty

Synthesis of Peptoids with Varying Alkyl Side Chains and Urea Functional Groups

    No full text
x, 30 p.Peptoids are N-substituted glycines that act as biomimetic analogs to peptides. Peptoids, like peptides, demonstrate significant changes in conformation based on the substituents attached to them. Whether a peptoid backbone has a cis or trans conformation is a significant factor in how they take shape as larger molecules. This aspect of conformation in peptoids is especially significant as an area of study as it can affect the compound’s ability to self-aggregate and form nanomaterials, including helices, turns, and nanosheets. Given the importance of cis and trans conformations, this was a strong focus of the NMR analysis done as part of this research. Urea is a small, polar functional group that has not yet been added to peptoids but may demonstrate influence over peptoid conformation. In this research, peptoid monomers with varying alkyl side chain lengths were synthesized via solution-phase synthesis. Urea additions were then performed on these molecules and optimized for up to 100% conversion of starting material. In future work, we plan to purify these compounds for further analysis. Comparisons between NMR obtained via computational and real-world methods were also done in order to determine the relevance of computations for the creation of potential peptoid libraries
