    Relationships to Recognition Among Generation Z College Students

    1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HThe struggle for recognition represents the primary motivation underpinning social conflict among humans (Honneth, 1992). The human need for recognition refers to the desire to be seen in a positive light (Lammont, 2018). Given that human consciousness and identity formation take shape through reciprocal realization, recognition is not merely a crutch for the needy, but a fundamental human need that foregrounds the constitution of one’s identity (Hegel, 1807; Honneth, 1992; Mead & Morris 1967; Taylor 1994.). This study investigates Generation Z college students’ relationships to recognition and the factors that influence those relationships. Self-report measures and individual interviews indicate that participants experience tension between concurrent orientations toward autonomy and community. The presence of both orientations among participants seems to have led them to experience their need for recognition in a complex fashion. This complex relationship is reflected by the misrecognition of the very need for recognition constituting the cultural model representing Generation Z college students’ relationships to recognition.Kalamazoo College.     Utilizing Combined Point Array’s in Hepatitis B Virus Drug-Bound State Investigative Research

    80 p.Viruses attach to a host cell by administering a molecular hijacking and in turn, replicating the genetic material enveloped within their capsid shells to spread viral particles. Viruses are complex in nature, coming in a multitude of different shapes and sizes. A promising feature of spherically shaped viruses like the Hepatitis B virus, is that they orient themselves to a set of distinct points called point array’s. A virus's genetic material is positioned at multiple radial levels within an icosahedral capsid. Point array’s give the geometric constraints that viruses with spherical icosahedral symmetry adhere to. By combining a virus’s network of best fitting point arrays, meaning the arrays that are the smallest distance away from capsid protrusions, we are able to compare the mechanism of the assembly and disassembly of viral capsid formations and essentially capsid stability. Within this study, a combined point array analysis was applied to the two strains of the Hepatitis B virus and five separate drugs that cause the mis-assembly and distortion of Hepatitis B virus capsids. The most significant locations on these drugs were identified in an analysis where specific amino acid sequencing at these locations were identified and compared. The results showed the most prominent locations in which HBV is dismantled and the capsid is changed after the drugs have induced mis-assembly. These locations were then compared to the ADYW strain of the HBV for similarities and differences in the virion capsid structure

    Altering Perception : Exploring Texture, Form, Memory, and Color with Molds

    25 p.Through my work with clay and plaster molds I investigated detailed surface texture, unique forms, glaze, and how perception of used objects can alter how the finished vessels are experienced. My research led me to examine how different forms of memory can impact how we view artwork, make connections, group objects, and reflect on both personal and collective memories. I was captivated by the transformation in displacing these objects from their intended environments, making them almost unrecognizable; using objects such as beads, vegetables, paper, tinfoil, mass produced ceramic wares, lampshades, and lace. My collections reflect considerable intention into the objects used and the relationship between form and function. Within various alterations of each piece, I found different relationships of materials, forms, glazes, and textures to be more successful than others. I explored layering, color theory, underglazes, functionality, and hand building. My work was made from multiple found objects, these explorations helped me to create work that was aesthetically pleasing and embodied continuous forms. I encouraged my audience to handle pieces in order to create a tactile experience and build a connection that goes deeper than artist and spectator

    Delayed Development of the Neuromuscular Junction in Mice Offspring Born Under Maternal High Fat Diet

    iv, 26 p.The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is the critical peripheral synapse that regulates the communication between skeletal muscle fibers and motor neurons. Our research is driven by interest in better understanding the stability and function of the NMJ under certain conditions such as obesity. Previous studies have explored the abnormalities in mouse skeletal muscles that have been exposed to maternal obesity. On the other hand, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) are a hallmark of the mammalian NMJ and are found at high density in the healthy NMJ. In this novel study, the NMJs from offspring of female mice fed with a High-Fat Diet (HFD). Specifically, this study explores the acetylcholine receptors density present at each postnatal stage, from postnatal day 3 (P3) until postnatal day 21 (P21). This is completed by examining the density of AChRs within the neuromuscular junction synapses. We found that mice born under maternal HFD showed a significant reduction in the number of acetylcholine receptors in the first 21 days of life while the synaptic area remained relatively the same. Providing evidence that mice born under maternal HFD are underdeveloped in comparison to mice born under maternal SD. This study will provide more insight into the impact maternal obesity has on offspring’s skeletal muscle and synaptic transmission which will in turn may generate research on the effects of maternal obesity in species including humans

    xiii, 53 p.I set out to write a poetry chapbook that perhaps included an essay or two tying the poems together in a way that only prose can. I wanted to explore sex: the lessons we learn about it, the euphemisms we use for it, the ways we express it, and the discussions we don’t have about it. This topic explored the questions I have used to navigate both my English and Women, Gender, and Sexuality (WGS) degrees. Poetry felt like the appropriate way to navigate these questions by softening the immediacy of talking about sex through form and metaphors while still having those “difficult” conversations. What I ended up with, however, is a collection of four essays and five poems. These pieces hardly talk about sex at all, but they do begin to navigate the waters I have failed to cross within my own circle of family and friends. Glass Slippers and the Power of Transformative Storytelling begins to unveil the things we teach women through media and culture. Most of the time, these are subtle lessons, but other times they’re blatant and intrusive. As educated human beings living with injustice, we generally understand that these lessons exist and that they have very real and violent implications. But we choose complacency. I’m guilty of this as much as you, dear reader. Complacency is easy. It’s comfortable. It’s less work. We risk our safety or our reputation or our sense of place when we question things. If I’ve learned anything during my undergraduate degree, though, it’s that these comfortabilities aren’t serving even the most privileged among us. Instead of confronting and centering sex in Glass Slippers and the Power of Transformative Storytelling, I have confronted my childhood filled with fairy tale ideas of both codependent marriages and absolute independence. As you’ll soon find, I don’t have a dramatic story to share. Glass Slippers and the Power of Transformative Storytelling isn’t a collection of answers to a series of questions. It’s a catalogue of more questions. The goal of this project wasn’t to find answers but to encourage you to think about the questions too

Antagonizing glutamate receptors with drugs such as MK-801 in vivo at high dosages causes damaging side effects, thus a new model for modulating extracellular glutamate is needed.     An Exploration of Geometric Space and Color

    15 p.This Senior Individualized Project (SIP) narrative document contains a detailed description of the artistic procedures of the artist, Evelyn Bartley, during the process of creating seventeen acrylic paintings. While having access to the Kalamazoo College shared studio space in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo, the artist developed a series of paintings on stretched and wooden canvases that are centered around color, and its interaction with space. With the help and guidance of her advisor, Tom Rice, Evelyn narrowed down her SIP topic from a focus on architecture and color, to mainly focus on colorful, abstract, geometric compositional work. In the class named Professional Practices taught by Richard Koenig, Evelyn developed skills in showcasing her work in exhibitions, photographing her work, and promoting her work. During the 2021-2022 school year, Evelyn had art showings at three separate City of Kalamazoo Art Hops at the Kalamazoo College Park Trades Center Studio and one showing in the Kalamazoo College Fine Arts Building gallery. The process of creating a SIP in the Studio Arts helped Evelyn grow as an artist and as a professional

    iv, 23 p.Global warming threatens the distribution of water in montane ecosystems by causing snowmelt earlier in the year and drought later in the year. The disruption of the yearly water cycle in the Rocky Mountains is a potential concern for plants like Scarlet Gilia who may not have traits equipped for climate change. This study analyzed how soil moisture and snow depth correlates with leaf traits of Scarlet Gilia, Ipomopsis aggregata, across and within seven populations in the Crested Butte and Gothic, Colorado area. Earlier snowmelt due to global warming is potentially affecting leaf traits that aid in photosynthesis. We expected that Scarlet Gilia plants with low water availability to have leaf traits that more efficiently photosynthesize and conserve water. Variation in soil moisture within sites had weak or no effects on the leaf traits, except that stomatal density increased with soil moisture in sites that also had low snowpack. Sites with lower snow depth had lower leaf water content, lower specific leaf area (SLA), and trichome density but showed no average change in stomatal density and diameter. The variation across sites in leaf water content, SLA, and trichome density could be attributed to aiding less transpiration in areas where there is drought-stress

    Dosing Human Dermal Fibroblasts with Diesel Particulate Matter Leads to an Increase in Oxidative Stress

    1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HAir pollution is a major problem facing the world today. One major pollutant is fine particulate matter (PM2.5) which is classified as any particle with a 2.5ug diameter, typically diesel particulate matter (DPM) and soot. With such small particle sizes, it is very easy for DPM to enter the body and impact the cardiovascular system (Wang et al., 2015), immune system (Wei and Tang, 2018), lungs (Liu et al., 2017), and even the nervous system (Shou et al., 2019). There are two major points of contact for these particles: through the airway and through the skin (Piao et al., 2018). Since the skin is the body’s largest organ, it has a large surface area that is exposed to air pollutants such as DPM. Learning how DPM impacts the skin will help to understand how these health issues can be avoided. In this study, I aim to look at the viability and change in gene expression of inflammation and collagen genes in NHDFs when treated with DPM. I expect to find an increase in inflammation (IL1A), tissue remodeling (MMP9), and antioxidant genes (NQO1 and NFE2L2), as well as a decrease in collagen (COL1A1).Kalamazoo College.
