A Southwest Conservation Experience and the Status of California Condor Conservation
No full text1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HThe objective of this Senior Integrated Project was to gain a better understanding of careers in conservation by gaining firsthand experience doing physical field work, and by conducting academic research on conservation more broadly. For my experiential SIP, I went to Arizona to work for the American Conservation Experience (ACE), where I had the opportunity to work alongside and gain career insight and new skills from experienced professionals in the field of land management and conservation. The work I did took place on federal lands, specifically Coconino National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park. In doing this work, I happened to witness the critically endangered California condors in the wild. I was quite moved by these encounters, which inspired me to conduct my literature review on the anthropogenic threats faced by California condors, and how conservation efforts are bringing this species back from the brink of extinction and putting them on a trajectory of growth. No full textii, 14 p.One responsibility of this internship was working with a newly conceived of startup: Dyntl. The vision is a university dental startup. Dyntl's mission is to leverage technology to improve dental health and overall wellness outcomes in university settings, making quality dental care accessible and a priority of students and faculty. Being part of this venture was an enriching experience. I was entrusted with the critical task of optimizing the operational efficiency of the nascent startup, specifically tailored for university students and faculty. The complexity of the problem, its multifaceted nature, and the stakes involved made quite the experience. The goal was to determine the maximum number of patients our startup could accommodate on a daily and monthly basis, with the optimal setting of six dental chairs. This task was not just about crunching numbers, but about creating an efficient, patient-friendly scheduling system that could scale based on many variables of different institutions. This required me to delve into various challenges, particularly the implications of an undersized operation, to craft innovative solutions
The Dynamics of Ceramic : An Analysis and Catalog of Marked Brick and Tile Recovered by the Gabii Project from the Gabii Archeological Site in 2022
No full textvi, 69 p.This work examines the information that can be gained about the town of Gabii through analysis of a portion of the Gabii Project’s archeological findings in 2022. The history and social position of the town of Gabi is initially laid out, beginning with the foundation of the city, how it was perceived in Roman culture, and its current status as an archeological site under the administration of the Gabii Project. The focus then narrows to a single section of the site, Area J. In order to shed light on this recently excavated area, the work of the 2022 dig season is described, and artifacts from this space are presented. Ceramic bricks and tiles from Area J with signs of direct human or animal contact were cataloged and analyzed to provide a deeper understanding of the environment and historical context of Gabii. The selection of cataloged items was found to provide further information about the source of building material used in later Gabine structures, as well as indicating a range of time when new materials were still being brought into the city
My Summer in Art : The Use of Art Therapy as a Coping Skill
No full textiv, 68 p.Through the summer, I have created an art journal channeling techniques from research on art therapy and self-help. My research consisted of multiple different sources, some that went through a variety of therapeutic art activities and some that explained the history of this topic. Furthermore, I read three books categorized as “self-help”. With this experience, I have been able to better my own mental health: this journal is a place to vent emotions, to bring awareness to yourself, and even a place to escape for a while. In addition, I have gained experience using creative therapeutic techniques that I will be able to implement when I go into social work with children in the future

As an intern at Graymont Medical, I was responsible for keeping an inventory, shipping, and receiving products. Graymont Medical is a medical distribution company, and I specifically worked in the warehouses. My most recent internship at RippleMatch, a startup in New York, has given me a chance to explore sales and marketing. RippleMatch is a company, similar to Linkedln, that focuses on connecting people with employers. But RippleMatch is specifically directed at students who are still in college or recent college graduates. At RippleMatch, I have used skills such as consultative selling and finding a target market to attract. I learned about the skills I have used in both of these internships in Business classes at K, such as Principles of Management, Business Communications, and Selling Strategies

Habitat Rehabilitation Along the Powerline ROW, Lillian Anderson Arboretum
No full text1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HPowerline Right-of-Ways (ROWs) are common projects that clear land in order to safely erect electrical lines without interference from vegetation. While involving plant removal, Powerline ROWs can be excellent opportunities to enhance a region by supporting pollinator habitats with smart land management. The Lillian Anderson Arboretum, owned by Kalamazoo College, hosts one such ROW; the powerline traverses several habitats, each claiming its own diverse array of plant species. While this ROW was not properly managed initially, the habitat rehabilitation project aims to assess the natural diversity of the area and appropriately act to support native plants and reduce proliferation of invasive species, all with the purpose of increasing the number and quality of pollinators supported in the region. Building a Web-based Interactive Query Builder at Microsoft
No full text34 p.Over the summer after my junior year, I spent twelve weeks interning at Microsoft, a multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, WA. During this time, I learnt various new technologies and was exposed to a unique work environment which aided my learning. I worked for the IDEAs (Insights, Data, Engineering and Analytics) org, which deals with all the data Microsoft collects from its users. More specifically, I was working on the Pharos project, which eliminates the need for Microsoft's data analysts and scientists to code config files, by allowing them to create the code using an interactive website instead. These SQL-like config files are used to access Microsoft's database called Cosmos. I worked on various aspects of this website, improving user interfaces and user experience by adding new features and components. During my internship, I gained a significant amount of knowledge about the end-to-end development of a software product. I also gained experience working in a large corporation, interacting with employees, and understanding the teamwork required to successfully shop a large product. Additionally, I learned the importance of consistently improving the product based on user feedback. By virtue of being placed on a fast-moving team, I gained hands-on experience with some of the latest frontend and full-stack technologies (including React, TypeScript, and Redux) which has helped grow my software building skillset exponentially; I have also been able to directly channel that experience into my personal and school projects. In this paper, I will holistically describe my experience at Microsoft and deep dive into my responsibilities, project design, and the new technologies I learned and applied. I will also describe the challenges I faced and how I overcame them, as well as the impact of the internship on my future career plans. Overall, my internship at Microsoft was a valuable and rewarding experience that taught me a great deal about the software engineering industry and the work of a professional engineer
Dead Men Do Tell Tales : a Literature Review of the Methods Used to Determine Time Since Death
No full textii, 16p.Taphonomy, or the study of changes that occur in our bodies after we die, is used frequently in police investigations as a forensic tool to determine factors in murders such as victim identity or time since death, often described as postmortem interval (PMI). PMI estimations are the most common identification made in forensic taphonomy and can be performed using a variety of methods. These methods include total body scoring, necrobiome analysis, forensic entomology, botany, and osteology. The importance of this in forensic cases varies but often PMI estimations are used in determining victim identity and timeline of a crime. These methods should be used in conjugation with each other to determine PMI and vary in accuracy, difficulty level and expense
City of Kalamazoo Neighborhood Planning Intern Reflection
No full text9 p.Over the summer I was given the opportunity to work as a neighborhood planning intern for the City of Kalamazoo. Although this internship was focused on community outreach and fostering a greater connection between the city and its citizens, some elements were focused directly on improving and maintaining the economic development of Kalamazoo. Through consistent communication with business owners and neighborhood associations, I was able to assist the city in creating nine business directories for nine specific neighborhoods. The neighborhoods that we focused on included: Westwood, Eastside, Oakwood, Oakland-Winchell, Vine, Edison, Parkview Hills, Stuart, and Northside. The reason the focus was on these neighborhoods stemmed from the absence of them and the businesses that reside there from Kalamazoo's local directory created by the Kalamazoo Public Library
